INTRODUctION Burrel, Spaç, Qafë-Bari, Ruzyně, Pankrác, Mírov, Leopoldov, Valdice, Jáchymov, Bytíz u Přibrami, Białołęka, Aiud, Gherla, Jilava, Piteşti, Recsk, Lovech, Belene, Idrizovo, Goli otok. These are names that mean little or nothing to many. But to East Europeans from Central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Balkans, they form an indelible part of their collective memory as the darkest page in the forty-five-year history of communism in the region. They are the names of detention centers, prison camps, and forced labor camps that corrupted the landscape of Eastern Europe from the end of World War II to the collapse of communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although less familiar than the Soviet gulag made famous through the writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and undeniably Soviet in inspiration, they were no less brutal and dehumanizing.1 They became a living hell for a huge number of human beings from every walk of life, especially intellectuals, artists, and students whose only crime in many in- stances was a repugnance for the repressive Communist system that demanded conformity and brooked no opposition. Resistance to the imposition of Communist rule throughout Eastern Europe manifested itself almost from the very beginning and grew into mass, and some- times violent, eruptions of protest, among them the Poznań riots in Poland in October 1956, the Hungarian Revolution later that same year, the Prague Spring that led to the Soviet and Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, the rise of Solidarity in Poland in the early 1980s—the reverberations from which were ultimately felt throughout all of Eastern Europe—and the bloody upheaval that ended the reign of Nicolae Ceauşescu in Romania in December 1989.

He ruled Albania for more than 40 years, following his “special Albanian path.” After coming into power in 1944, the “Balkan ex-Muslim Stalinist” (Halliday 1986: 6) “killed god”1 and became a replacement deity for the youthful generation, transformed Albania from a backward post-Ottoman province into a modern industrial country, installed a violent isolationism, and led a life hollowed by paranoia (Lendvai 1985: 64–65; Fischer 2007: 249–266; Mëhilli 2011: 7–13). Hoxha’s first (natural) death in 1985 and second (political) death in 1991 generated a full circle of events, from the immortalization to the damnation of an absolute monarch and from anti-communist iconoclasm to bittersweet nostalgia for the dictator- ship.

Contact: [email protected] Review Article The Socialist Design Urban Dilemmas in Postwar Europe and the Soviet Union ELIDOR MËHILLI We programmed a system and it programmed us.1 —György Konrád, !e City Builder “We managed to rearrange the city down to the last grain of sand,” declares György Konrád’s frantic, impassionate, obsessive, idealistic city builder.2 He has gone through all the trials of communist rule: a distinctly bourgeois background, enchantment, postwar professional success, ambitious building assignments, arrest, imprisonment, disenchantment, and, !nally, release from prison into a world without Stalin but still with total planning. His unnamed socialist city, like Konrád’s text, is dense, polluted, sprawling, and layered. "e scale of urban planning appears both awesome and terrifying, provoking in the builder disgust just as much as pride. One minute he is mighty, with his bird’s eye view and 600 convicts working under him; the next he is languishing in a Stalinist prison designed by his own father. His bold plans for remaking the fabric of society seem to radically depart from anything ever done before, yet they merely introduce “a modi!ed system of inequalities in place of older systems.”3 Both the provincial East European city and its builder seem inextricably tied to the same fate.

  • Political Speaking in Art: Cultural Images of the Transforming Society
E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 2 No 11 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy October 2013 Political Speaking in Art: Cultural Images of the Transforming Society Dr. Fjoralba Satka Aleksandër Moisiu University, Albania Email: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2013.v2n11p160 Abstract This paper represents an examination in the field of visual art, in particular of painting, where political speaking has altered the traditional understanding and interpreting art images, their sociological context and the language of their messages. Political speaking in art is a challenge for artists to create models of cultural images of the Albanian transforming community, as well as it is a challenge for the audience to decode them. The focus of the paper is on the comparison between the politically speaking art of ‘socialist realism’ and understanding of its cultural images, and how the democratic changes in the state conceptualized the visual representation of the politically speaking contemporary painting. Political speaking in art is not only a special artistic feature, but it has functions to educate and cultivate, and to accustom to thought. Political speaking in the art of ‘socialist realism’ was used by the policy as a tool for premeditated ideological persuasion. It created a model of art that disseminated its influence through all socialist countries. Contemporary politically speaking Albanian art not only delivers rational agonistic modelsof art that use the public space for dethroning the same glorified communist policy, but has wider functions. Keywords: Albanian art, political speaking in art, images, visual representation of a political idea, politically speaking art and its sociological context, coding and decoding political messages.

  • Great Constructions in Albania During the Period ‘70-‘80
E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 3 No 1 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy March 2014 Great Constructions in Albania during the Period ‘70-‘80 Ermir Hoxha University of Tirana, Faculty of History and Philology, The Department of Heritage and Culture Email: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2014.v3n1p379 Abstract The Albanian architecture during the XXth century reflects worthily the aspirations of the country’s foreign or native leaders who were in power until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Starting from Zogu, Mussolini, and finishing with Enver Hoxha, they all demanded for the architecture to be personalized according to the state’s ideology, giving a demarking spirit to the main square of the capital, like they wanted to do to all the country. The sober rationalism of the ‘40s created by Bozio, was attempted without success to be substituted by the “Red Doric” of the ‘50s, and then coming back to the rational, but functional language of the ‘60s, a very contemporary voluminous one. Its gazing towards the West gave a little freedom to the ideological solidification that would legitimate the decades that would follow. The ‘70s-‘80s period would be the confirmation of the native architectonic language, with buildings that aggravated the state’s finances as the image of the dictator was aggravating everything else until his last years of life. As a typical mirroring of a disintegrating or delirious regime, it followed its destiny until the last hours, as a typical confirmation of the will imposed from the power-holders, like happens in any dictatorship.
