The sixth edition of the International press award Mare Nostrum Awards, sponsored by the publication Grimaldi Magazine Mare Nostrum, has the aim to promote the knowledge of the Motorways of the Sea, which are a valid alternative to road transport as well as an excellent opportunity for a sustainable development of Mediterranean countries. Nel corso delle età geologiche, questo deposito si è trasformato in una massa solida e compatta di conglomerato calcareo sottoposta in seguito ad una intensa opera di dilavamento quando le acque si sono ritirate nell’attuale Mare Egeo. Più tardi, durante l’era terziaria, si è formato il ripiegamento alpino della catena del Pindo che ha provocato una frattura tra queste rocce e creato tra loro una valle rendendo il luogo particolarmente selvaggio ed inacces- sibile, caratteristica che ha assicurato a monaci ed eremiti una straordinaria protezione contro gli invasori. Mimetizzati, arroccati lungo le ripide pareti e sui cocuzzoli delle rocce, si sono materializzati questi incredibili monasteri, straordinarie opere di inge- gneria. Osservarli, visitarli, suscita una smisurata emozione. Qualche monastero sembra un tutt’uno con la roccia, come esploso all’improvviso dalla roccia stessa mentre un’autentica sorpresa arriva dalla scoperta di affreschi ed icone che adornano l’interno di chiese e cappelle. According to the German geologist Philipson, this incredible one-off geological phenomenon was formed millions of years ago when the plain of Thessaly was covered by a sea. A series of earth movements pushed the seabed upwards, creating a high plateau and causing many fault lines to appear in the thick layer of sandstone. The material deposited over time turned into a solid mass of compact sandstone and conglomerate that was left when the waters eventually receded into the Aegean Sea. Later, during the tertiary age, a rift formed between the Pindos Mountains and these huge rock pillars, creating a valley in the middle and making the area very wild and inaccessible, and also an ideal refuge affording excellent protection. The original monks’ dwellings are camouflaged, in hollows and fissures in the rock towers and perched on top, in an incredible feat of engineering. The very sight of them is thrilling in itself. Some of the architectural structures seem to be an integral part of the rock, hewn out of it and it comes as a real surprise to discover frescoes and icons adorning the interiors of the churches and chapels. The sacristies are full of sacred images, crucifixes, vestments, frescoes, and Byzantine codices and manuscripts, while other relics from here are now housed in the National Library in Athens. Hardly surprising since it’s written in griko, the lingua franca of the Greek Salentine peninsula; this Doric dialect is dying out, much like all the other ancient traditions teetering on the brink of extinction due to cultural homogenisation, though it lives on in poetry, in the writings of scholars, and indeed in ballads. The lines above are an ode to women and female beauty. A universal message whose words come from our ancestors who arrived in Homeric times by sea from Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Cyprus. And, like all people forced to migrate by sea, they retreated into the hinterland of this rugged territory, settled and readied their defences against other ancient mariners. Thus they forged a new world in spite of all adversity. Today the Greek Salentine has achieved DOC status, it has its own website and – thanks to the work of scholars, enthusiasts and researchers – it has reassembled a series of traditions and legends. The area comprises about ten municipalities in the province of Lecce: Calimera, Martignano, Carpignano, Zollino, Castrignano, Conigliano, Melpignano, Cutrofiano, Ster- natía, Soleto. Anni in cui il destino del mondo è cambiato e di cui i paesaggi del Siò e della ruta dels Castells traspirano testimonianza e storia da ogni pietra, da ogni angolo. Su questa strada furono erette decine e decine di fortificazioni dalle quali i due popoli si fronteggiarono spiandosi e acquisendo ognuno qualcosa della cultura e della scienza dell'altro. Si calcola che in tutta la Castiglia vi siano oltre seicento manieri. Ma torniamo al Rio Siò che oggi è un fiumicello appena accen- nato che si dipana per circa sessanta chilometri dalla sua fonte Gàver fino a Lleida. Sulle sue sponde ci sono oltre trenta castelli, tra i più belli della Spagna e del mondo. La Ruta si può percorrere in maniera del tutto libera, andando dritti, a zig zag, o facendo tappa maniero per maniero. Dipende dal tempo a disposizione e dalla sete di sapere, o da quanta voglia si ha di sentirsi catapulta- ti all'improvviso mille anni addietro. Ci sono due luoghi che l'En- te del turismo di Catalunya raccomanda di non perdere: i castelli di Montsonìs e di Concabella. Intorno lo spettacolo è sublime con tante piccole case e fortificazioni arroccate. Una dopo l'altra portano al superbo maniero che domina la valle del fiume. Il secondo castello, situato nella zona della Segarra, ha intorno un borgo medievale di straordinario fascino ed è anche sede del Centro de Interpretación, aperto da pochi anni, e indi- spensabile per entrare con piena consapevolezza nel mondo dei manieri. Uffici che facilitano la visita sono stati aperti proprio per il crescente successo che la Ruta ha avuto negli ultimi anni. Solo sull'itinerario del Siò, ad esempio, ci sono quindici ristoranti di alta cucina e una trentina di case rurali (Bed&Breakfast) conven- zionate con il Dipartimento de Turisme en Lleida. Tutto intorno non è difficile trovare, magari lungo le stradine secondarie che portano alle fortezze più nascoste, angoli in cui gustare la cucina di Catalogna. Piatti tipici le cui origini si perdono nei fumi delle cucine medioevali. Come i cargols a la llauna (lumache stufate e poi gratinate). Si possono assaggiare superbi piatti a base di ana- tra, trote e cacciagione. E poi l'olla aranesa (stufato con verdure) o gli xolis (salumi del luogo). Vanno provati anche i tipici dolci o il cioccolato di Agramunt. Ci sono più di seicento castelli. Tutti bellissimi e ognuno con la sua particolarità. Ma si dividono in due grandi famiglie: quelli che si possono visitare e quelli che si possono vedere soltanto dall'esterno. La Ruta permette, a chi la percorre, anche di incon- trare centri e popolazioni di grande interesse paesistico. Tra gli esempi la Fuentes de Gàver, da dove nasce il rio Siò, cittadine fortificate come Murallat o Montfalcò, o piccoli gioielli di architettura come Balaguer o Cervera. Per non dimenticare i Pirenei di Lleida dove c'è il parco nazionale di Aiguestortes di bellezza incomparabile e disseminato di chiese romaniche e piccoli manieri. E una strada che, qui si racconta, fu percorsa dai templari in fuga da Filippo il bello, con il loro misterioso tesoro.

the Siò River and the Ruta dels Castells is testimony to this history in every stone and at every turn. Dozens and dozens of fortresses were built on this road, used by the two civilisations not only as a means of defence but also to spy on each other and assimilate elements of the other’s culture and science. It is estimated that there are over six hundred manors in Castile. But back to the Rio Siò: today it is little more than a stream and stretches for about 60 km from its source in Gàver to lleida. On its banks there are more than thirty castles, among the most beautiful in Spain or anywhere in the world for that matter. You can follow the Ruta any way you fancy – going straight, zigzagging, or stop- ping at each stately home. It depends on the amount of time you have, on your thirst for knowledge, and on to what extent you want to feel suddenly catapulted a thousand years back in time. There are two places in particular that the Catalonia Tourist Board says you should not miss: the castles of Montsonìs and Concabella. The former also houses the head office of the "Castells Culturals de Catalunya" foundation, which organizes activities inside these ancient fortresses and provides all the information you need to plan your itinerary. All around there are superb views with many attractive little houses and fortifications perched on the hilltops. If you follow them up you will end up in the splendid citadel overlooking the river valley. Concabella Castle, in the La Segarra region, is located in a strikingly beautiful medieval village. It is also home to the Centro de Interpretación, which opened a few years with the aim of educating the public about the forts. This service also reflects the growing popularity of the Ruta. On the Siò itinerary alone, for example, there are some fifteen top quality restaurants and about thirty farmhouse holiday B&B places officially approved by the Lleida Tourism Department. Also, it isn’t hard to find a choice of eateries serving traditional food from Catalonia; one of the best places to look is along the minor roads leading to the more remote fortresses. Typical dishes dating back to the Middle Ages include cargols a la llauna (stewed snails au gratin). You can also try delicious offerings based on duck, trout and game. Other popular dishes are olla aranesa (stew with vegetables) and xolis (local cold cuts). Also highly recommended are the desserts and Agramunt chocolate. There are more than 600 castles in this part of the world – all beautiful and each with its own peculiarities. They can be divided into two broad categories: those that are open to the public and those that aren’t. However, the Ruta has lots more to offer the visitor, with many delightful towns and villages. Examples include Fuentes de Gàver, where the Rio Siò has its source, fortified towns like Murallat or Montfalcò, and architectural gems like Balaguer or Cervera. Without forgetting the incomparable beauty of the Aiguestortes National Park in Lleida in the Pyrenees, dotted with Romanesque churches and small manors. And, so the locals will tell you, the Ruta was also on the route followed by the Knights Tem- plar fleeing Philip the Handsome with their mysterious treasure.
