Where to Seek Care

The following steps are recommended to patients to access care when they are unable to see their healthcare provider:

1. Contact your primary care provider to discuss next steps in your care.

2. If you do not have a primary care provider:

• Find one by calling the number on the back of your health insurance card.

• Consider visiting a Federally Qualified Health Center in your area for healthcare services or for help getting health insurance. Federally Qualified Health Centers provide services to everyone regardless of ability to pay. Look up your County to find local FQHCs.

Avoid Withdrawal

Patients who have been treated with opioids or benzodiazepines and lose access to care may be at risk of medication withdrawal.

Signs of withdrawal could be anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, shiver, abdominal cramping, tremor, or dizziness.

Contact your local Drug and Alcohol Department which is a resource that connects patients to treatment services, including options for detoxing.

3

Avoid Opioid Overdose

Naloxone is a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose and is available through a state-wide standing order, which means people do not need a prescription. Most pharmacies carry Naloxone. Signs of an overdose may include: small, “pin-point” pupils, falling asleep/loss of consciousness, slow/shallow breathing, choking sounds, limp body, or pale, blue, or cold skin. If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose: 1. Call 911. 2. Administer Naloxone, if available. 3. Try to keep the person awake and breathing. 4. Lay the person on their side to prevent choking. 5. Stay with him or her until emergency workers arrive.
