ground2008 annuannual report

G9059Annualreport.indd 1 4/14/09 10:25:31 PM Play is not a luxury… and neither is community.

Comet Deli in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. closed a few years ago, but I still miss it. Comet was more than just a great kosher deli and kwik mart because the owners, Sid and Bernice Drazin, made it a point to engage their customers, to reach out to their community, and to give back in ways both big and small. It was an institution that sparked great conversations between neighbors and brought the whole community together. Fourteen years ago, I set up KaBOOM! at Comet’s lunch counter, making business calls from its payphone and bouncing ideas off Sid while he put lunch on my “tab,” which never came due. The Drazins paid for my rst plane ticket and introduced me to everyone they knew to help me get the conversation going about KaBOOM!.

It’s in this kind of engaged and invested atmosphere that KaBOOM! was born. KaBOOM! isn’t just about building playgrounds, it’s about building communities. It’s about talking to people and challenging folks to step out of their comfort zones to truly engage with the rest of their community. As I look at KaBOOM! today, I see an organization that has grown into a nationwide community and movement, but one that keeps true to its foundation of genuine conversation and real relationships.

Since 1995, we’ve engaged millions of new people in the conversation about play, empowering them to get involved. In 2008, KaBOOM! inducted 67 new Playful City USA communities, who have worked diligently to shape the agenda on play by sharing best practices and advocating for improved policies on recreation, health and well-being. Our Playmaker network connects play

The KaBOOM! team and I bounce ideas off of them—just as I did with Sid at Comet’s counter—and they respond with the same innovative suggestions and big-hearted generosity that launched KaBOOM! 14 years ago. Our funding partners, despite tough economic times, have forti ed their relationships with us, funding our organization and spreading the word about the work we undertake every day. I’m extraordinarily grateful to everyone who has been able to stand by us, both on builds and during budget meetings. They are our Sids and Bernices and we could never have made it this far without them.

This report is just another piece of the conversation we started in 1995. I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say and hope you join us in person and online as we work to build a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
