Cheaha State Park Just twenty miles from Anniston, Cheaha State Park, the highest point of Alabama, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts or those just wanting to catch a breathtaking sunset. With its trails and climbs, and swimming, the park has it all, including hotel accommodations. Chief Ladiga Trail Anniston/Weaver/Jacksonville/Piedmont The Chief Ladiga Trail currently runs 32.5 miles from the Alabama/ Georgia line into the City of Anniston. As Alabama’s first Rails to Trails project, this paved recreational trail follows the former Seaboard/CSX Railroad and connects to Georgia’s 63 mile Silver Comet Trail, making Ladiga part of the longest paved rail trail in the U.S. for walkers, bikers, skaters, strollers and more. Choccolocco Mountain Off- Road Vehicle Park 1312 Louise Drive SE, Jacksonville, 256-365-0297 This Off-Road Vehicle Park welcomes every type of off- road vehicle, including ATV’s, Side-by-sides, dirt bikes, four wheel drives, rail buggies, and rock crawlers. This 450 acres of forest covered mountains has a vast trail system, with moderate to extreme trails for more advanced vehicles. Civilian Marksmanship Program CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park 4357 Turner Mill Road, Talladega This more than 500 acre public facility offers sport shooters opportunities to practice and participate in competitive events, with state of the art electronic targets and monitors for participants and spectators. CMP Indoor Air Gun Range 1470 Sentinel Drive, Anniston The CMP South Competition Center contains 80, 10 meter firing points with electronic targets and monitors. Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail Off Hwy 202, Anniston Located on 4000 acres of Coldwater Mountain in Anniston, this brand-new trail offers both 1.5 mile beginner loops, for riders of any level, and a 10 mile Blue Loop for intermediate riders. The trail is open to hikers and runners as well. Currently, more than 25 miles of trails have been built under the supervision of IMBA Trail Solutions, with more than 75 miles of trails scheduled to be built. Henry Farm Mountain Bike & Running Trails 351 Henry Road, Jacksonville Located on the mountain adjacent to the Henry Farm Baseball Fields and parking lot, these trails are great for beginners and experienced riders and runners, with rock features and gradual climbs. 3 Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge Bain Gap Road, Anniston, 256-848-7085 With more than 6,000 acres of former military base, this area was designated as a National Wildlife Refuge to protect a unique and endangered ecosystem, the mountain longleaf pine forest. This land is also home to the Bains Gap Waterfall and trails. Neely Henry Lake Ohatchee This 11,000 acres is perfect for skiing, boating and fishing along Hwy 77 North. This area has public boat launches, picnic areas and fishing piers perfect for the whole family. Oxford Lake and Coldwater Covered Bridge 401 McCullars Lane, Oxford, 256-831-2660 Stretch your legs on this paved and gravel track around the lake or spread out a picnic for the whole family, while the kids play on the adventure park playground. This area also houses tennis courts, a swimming pool, baseball complex, indoor basketball courts, a newly renovated and expanded civic center space and more. It is also home to one of Alabama’s oldest remaining covered bridges, moved from Coldwater Creek to Oxford Lake and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pinhoti Hiking Trail Talladega/Cleburne/ Calhoun Counties This is Alabama’s premiere long- distance recreation trail, spanning 110 miles and traversing the ridges and crests of the Talladega National Forest Mountains through Georgia to connect with the Appalachian Trail. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Silver Lakes 1 Sunbelt Pkwy, Glencoe, 256-892-3268 This 36 hole course consists of three 9 hole champion- ship courses and a 9 hole par 3 short course. These re- nowned courses are located along Highway 431 between Gadsden and Anniston. Stoney Brook Golf Course 1505 Country Club Drive SW, Jacksonville, 256-435-3114 This 18 hole par 72 course features 6,296 yards of golf from the long tees, with a slope rating of 115. 5 Culture & History Anniston Museum of Natural History 800 Museum Drive, Anniston, 256-237-6766 Explore the wilds of Africa, the wonders of the North American wilderness, and the mysteries of 2,300 year old Egyptian Mummies in the Anniston Museum of Natural History. More than 2,000 natural history items are on display, and children can get hands on experience with nature in the discovery room and animal shows. Centennial Memorial Park 1701 Quintard Avenue, Anniston Since 1999, this site serves as the official home of Alabama’s Veterans Memorial. The names of every Alabamian killed during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf are engraved on the granite wall. Resolutions have been passed to add Afghanistan and Iraq as well as Firefighters and Law Enforcement killed in the line of duty. Civil Rights Trail In Downtown Anniston, visitors can take a walking tour of the Civil Rights Trail through Anniston. Located at 1031 Gurnee Ave. and on the corner of 9th and Noble, two murals and panels recap the events of 1961, depicting the history of Calhoun County during the Civil Rights movement. Dugger Mountain Music Hall Alabama 9, Kings Gap Mountain Road, 256-453-2504 Along Highway 9, each third Saturday night of the month, the doors are opened to welcome the community to enjoy family entertainment at no charge. This show is broadcast on Alabama Public Television each Tuesday night at 10 P.M. Janney Furnace Civil War & Native American Museum 145 Janney Road, Ohatchee, 256-892-5198 This Civil War Era Furnace was constructed in 1863 using 200 slaves as labor but was burned by Union troops destroying the shacks that were built for work and damaging parts of the brick chimneys. Each spring, they host the Battle of Ten Islands Reenactment. Their Confederate and Native American Museum is now open to the public 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Tuesday through Friday and 12 to 5 P.M. on Saturdays. Oxford Performing Arts Center 100 Choccolocco Street, Oxford, 256-241-3322 This performance and concert venue accommodates 1,130 seats in the middle of historic downtown Oxford. With additions to the former historic school and city hall facility, this venue now houses state-of-the-art lighting and sound, an orchestra pit, dressing rooms, and a proscenium stage with large wing space and storage.
