Auch musikalisch war das eine tolle Zeit, weil da eine Menge Energie in der Luft lag. Das war eine Zeit der Experimente. Und das Ganze folgte einer großen Ära des Rock'n'Roll. Die Quellen, aus denen wir Musiker damals schöpfen konnten, waren also sehr reichhaltig. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten konnten wir nie mehr auf so ergiebige Quellen zurückgreifen. Die Musik der 70er Jahre zum Beispiel war viel flacher und nicht annähernd so anregend wie die aus den 50er Jahren. Paul Simon über die 60er Jahre, in denen er gemeinsam mit seinem damaligen Partner Art Garfunkel einige der bekanntesten Songs der Dekade schuf. Die US-Musiker Paul Simon und Art Garfunkel sind eines der spannungsreichsten Paare der Popgeschichte. Als Simon & Garfunkel trafen sie mit Balladen wie „The Sound of Silence“, „Homeward Bound“ oder "The Boxer" die Stimmung der Zeit. Die beiden trennten sich 1970 und verfolgten ihre Solokarrieren - Simon mit wesentlich mehr Erfolg als Garfunkel. Sie taten sich aber immer wieder halbherzig für kurze Projekte zusammen. Das ungleiche Paar – Paul Simon und Art Garfunkel werden 75. Eine Sendung von und mit Christiane Rebmann Simon & Garfunkel – Homeward Bound / Sounds of Silence Als Paul Simon und Art Garfunkel 1952 aufeinander trafen, standen sie gemeinsam für eine Aufführung von Alice im Wunderland auf der Schulbühne. Sie waren beide elf Jahre. Paul Simon war am 13. Oktober 1941 in Newark zur Welt gekommen, Art Garfunkel am 5. November desselben Jahres in Queens, wo er – wie Paul Simon – im jüdischen Viertel aufwuchs. Paul sollte später Englisch und Jura studieren, Art Architektur, Kunstgeschichte und Mathematik. Schon in der Schule fingen die beiden an, gemeinsam Musik zu machen. Ab 1956 traten sie unter dem Namen Tom & Jerry auf. Mit dem Song „Hey Schoolgirl“ schafften es die damals erst 15jährigen Musiker in die Top Fifty der US Charts. Tom & Jerry - Hey schoolgirl Nach einer kurzen Trennungsphase kamen die beiden 1963 wieder zusammen. Diesmal nannten sie sich Simon & Garfunkel und konzentrierten sich auf folkige Klänge. Paul Simon sang, spielte Gitarre und komponierte, Art Garfunkel sang. Mit ihrer Musik fingen sie die Aufbruchstimmung der 60er Jahre, aber auch die Ambivalenz der Zeit ein. O-Ton Das Ganze wurde überschattet vom Vietnamkrieg, eine nationale Katastrophe, dann die Ermordung John F Kennedys und dazu die anderen tumultartigen Geschehnisse. Und dann die Nachwehen der Nachkriegszeit. Auf der anderen Seite der wirtschaftliche Boom, der Liberalismus in der Politik, ein junger Präsident. Damals hing so viel Optimismus in der Luft. Die Beatles waren musikalisch eine sehr optimistische Gruppe. Die 70er Jahre waren dagegen schal. Und die 80er Jahre sowieso. 2 3 1964 komponierte Simon den Song „The Sound of Silence“, der mit den Zeilen „Hello Darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again“ begann. Eine Erinnerung an die Teenagerzeit, in der er sich nachts häufig ins Badezimmer zurückgezogen hatte, um dort im Dunkeln Gitarre zu spielen, fasziniert vom Echo der Kacheln. Der Song erschien in einer Folkversion auf Simon & Garfunkels Debütalbum „Wednesday Morning 3 a.m.“. Es fand zunächst keinen Anklang, und Garfunkel widmete sich wieder seinem Architekturstudium, während Simon nach London zog und dort ein Soloalbum aufnahm. Doch dann bemerkte Tom Wilson, der Produzent des Albums, dass „The Sound of Silence“ von einigen US College Sendern gespielt wurde. Er fand, dass dem Lied Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug fehlten und bat die Musiker, mit denen er gerade an einem Album für Bob Dylan arbeitete, noch ein wenig länger zu bleiben. Der zusätzlich mit einem Echo versehene Remix ging Ende 1965 in die Charts, erreichte 1966 den ersten Platz und machte das Duo auch weltweit berühmt. Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence / Sounds of Silence Wie zeitlos die Komposition „The Sound of Silence“ ist, zeigte sich zum Beispiel, als Paul Simon vor fünf Jahren am Ground Zero anlässlich des 10. Jahrestages der Anschläge vom 11. September dieses Lied sang. Da stand er auf der Bühne, mit seinem blauen Käppi und der Gitarre, ohne Brimborium. Er traf zwar nicht immer den Ton. Aber mit der bewegenden und irgendwie auch tröstlichen Version holte er seine Landsleute emotional ab. 1966 sorgte der Song erstmal dafür, dass sich Simon & Garfunkel wieder zusammentaten. In den folgenden Jahren nahmen sie die Alben „Sounds of Silence“ und „Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme“ auf, die auf sehr positive Resonanz stießen. Der eindringliche Harmoniegesang, die eingängigen Melodien – dazu vielleicht auch der optisch ungleiche Eindruck – der große, schlaksige blondgelockte Garfunkel neben dem eher klein gewachsenen dunkelhaarigen Simon – das war etwas Besonderes. Simon & Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair / Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme Nach einem ausführlichen Gespräch mit dem Filmregisseur Mike Nichols revidierte Simon sein Vorurteil, Filmmusik zu schreiben sei ein Ausverkauf des eigenen Talents. Er nahm Nichols Angebot an, Musik zum Film „Die Reifeprüfung“ zu schreiben, der unter anderem wegen Dustin Hoffmans hervorragender schauspielerischer Leistung zu einem Klassiker der Filmgeschichte werden sollte. Das wichtigste Lied im Soundtrack, „Mrs. Robinson“, wurde 1968 auf dem Album „Bookends“ veröffentlicht und mit dem Grammy Award als Platte des Jahres ausgezeichnet. Es war das erste Mal, dass ein Rocksong mit diesem Preis geehrt wurde. Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson / Bookends Zwar hatte Paul Simon immer erklärt: „Art und ich haben gemeinsam, dass uns die Musik sehr wichtig ist.“ Doch die beiden hatten sich nach kurzer Zeit auseinander 3 4 entwickelt. Der exzentrische Art ging dem Kontrollfreak und Perfektionisten Paul auf den Wecker. Und umgekehrt. Die zwei Künstler waren einfach zu unterschiedlich. Es gab Egoprobleme und hässliche Machtspielchen. Aus der Freundschaft wurde eine Streitbeziehung. Die Auseinandersetzungen wurden zum Teil durch Entscheidungen von außen geschürt. So übernahm Art 1969 in Mike Nichols Film „Catch 22“ eine Rolle. Der Part, der Paul zugedacht war, wurde jedoch aus dem Drehbuch gestrichen. Und der Songwriter sah nicht mehr ein, dass wegen der Dreharbeiten die nächsten Plattenaufnahmen des Duos verschoben werden sollten. 1969 produzierten die beiden noch das CBS TV Feature „Songs of America“, in dem sie neben ihrer Musik und Aufnahmen von gemeinsamen Proben auch Szenen mit Martin Luther King, von der Ermordung John F.Kennedys und vom Vietnamkrieg einstreuten. 1970 erschien das letzte Album „Bridge over troubled water“. Es ging in zehn Ländern an die Spitze der Charts, hielt sich in Großbritannien 35 Wochen auf Platz Eins und bekam sechs Grammyauszeichnungen. Den Titelsong gibt es mittlerweile in rund 50 Coverversionen. Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water / Bridge over troubled water 1971 erklärte Paul Simon das Projekt Simon & Garfunkel für beendet. Die beiden Musiker gingen getrennte Wege. In den folgenden Dekaden arbeiteten sie nur noch selten zusammen, unter anderem, um Wahlwerbung für die Demokraten zu machen oder ihren Kollegen John Lennon im Studio zu unterstützen. 1981 gaben sie ein gemeinsames Konzert im New Yorker Central Park, um Geld für die Sanierung der heruntergekommenen Grünanlage zu sammeln. Die Show zog eine halbe Million Zuschauer an. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer / Concert in Central Park Bei meiner ersten Begegnung mit Paul Simon war ich erstaunt, wie klein er ist. Aber er hat eine unglaubliche Präsenz. Und er wirkt dadurch viel größer, wenn man ihm gegenüber sitzt. Im Gespräch macht er einen schüchternen Eindruck. Er antwortet bedächtig, in sehr geschliffener Sprache. Er beobachtet sehr genau, und er erinnert sich noch Jahre später an ein Gespräch. Die Schüchternheit machte ihm auch lange Zeit bei Live Auftritten zu schaffen. O-Ton Ich habe mich bei Konzerten nie wohl gefühlt. Es war nicht so, dass ich nervös gewesen wäre. Ich war nie nervös. Die ganzen Jahre nicht. Ich sah mich nur einfach vom Temperament her nicht als Künstler, der gern etwas über sich selbst enthüllt. Deshalb habe ich mich auch nie darum bemüht, das Publikum auf einer emotionalen Ebene einzubeziehen. Ich habe es immer nur auf einer intellektuellen Ebene einbezogen. He does not water down the realities of his suffering as an apostle of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ—as he writes: Five times I have received the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked; for a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from bandits, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers and sisters; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, hungry and thirsty, often without food, cold and naked. And besides other things, I am under daily pressure because of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weal, and I am not weak? (2 Corinthians 11:24-29). Not only did Paul suffer all these things in his apostolic ministry, he also suffered in his personal life, especially with what he dubbed his “thorn in the flesh”: “Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.” Paul does not reveal what this specific “thorn in the flesh” was, though there are many theories about it, but he does reveal what he did about it: “Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness’” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

Women have always been involved in the creation of film as a cultural product. However, they have rarely been given positions of power in major film productions. Using qualitative approaches, I examine the different ways in which men and women directors approach creating film. I examine 20 films, half were directed by men and half by women. I selected the twenty films out of two movie genres: Action and Romantic Comedy. These genres were chosen because of their very gendered marketing. My focus was on the different ways in which gender was shown on screen and the differences in approach by men and women directors. The research showed differences in approach of gender but also different approaches in race and sexuality. Future studies should include more analysis on differences by race and sexuality.

    The Rhythm of the Saints by: Stewart Clegg Introduction Reflexivity isn't what it used to be. Reflexivity, no longer the preserve of a largely formalist, formulaic and limited theoretical conversation, is, according to Lash and Urry (1994) a property of a system of flows. Created and recreated in these flows are spaces and signs, significations and semiotics, symbols and mobile subjects and objects moving through circuits of power framed by meaning, space and time. The critical variable in meaning is reflexivity: some subjects are able to be more acutely reflexive than others because of specific configurations of space and time which flow through them. Flows channel through institutional spaces characterized by different 'governance structures'. Institutional spaces are both regionally and organizationally elaborated through space and time by different constitutions of meaning-governance structures. Regionally, some are thickly fabricated by multifarious flows channelling through contiguous nodes, such as the capital cities of the postmodern world. Others are spaces from which flows retreat or remain absent in a vicious circle that empties out life chances thus contained: the ghettoes of the UK and the USA, the wastelands of Eastern Europe. Within the saturated spaces of rich flows governance is less by either market or hierarchies and more by either or both of these being embedded in networks. Many flows are risky as organization power circuits stretch and spill beyond the capacities for reflexive monitoring and management that they are inscribed within. At risk are embodied selves seeking to manage whatever circumstances they are in, circumstances of escalating existential uncertainty. Reflexivity, in thick circuits, defines these states increasingly in aesthetic terms, in both work, where design and symbolic manipulation overtake traditional labour processes, and in play, where subjects check in and out of different avenues for self expression.

    PROGRAM READERS JAMES SMITH (husband of NYPD officer Moira Smith) James Smith is a retired New York City Police Officer and husband of NYPD officer Moira Smith. On the morning of September 11th, Moira was working in Precinct 13 when she responded to the attacks and ran into the South Tower. She is survived by James and their daughter, Patricia, who was two years old at the time. James, now retired after 21 years with the NYPD, remarried in 2007. He and his wife, Christine, have two sons, James and Christopher. In 2006, James spoke at the September 11th commemoration ceremony with Patricia. James and Patricia, who is now 12 years old, will be speaking again today. PETER NEGRON (son of Pete Negron) Peter Negron lost his father, Pete Negron, who worked on 88th Floor of North Tower. Peter was 11 years old at the time, and learned of the attacks while sitting in class. He and his family lived in New Jersey, but moved to Florida four years ago with his mother and younger brother, Austin. Peter attends Indian River State College and is studying to be a forensic scientist Peter read a poem on behalf of his father at the 2003 September 11th commemoration ceremony. He was 13 years old at the time and now, at 21 years old, he will be speaking again today. DEBRA EPPS (sister of Christopher Epps) Debra Epps lost her brother Christopher Epps, who worked for Marsh & McLennan on the 98th Floor of the North Tower. Christopher was the youngest of family’s seven siblings.
