The Nurse is in…

Hyperthermia is an umbrella term for an array of illnesses that can result from becoming overheated. Illnesses include the following: Heat Syncope: sudden dizziness following activity in hot weather. Heat Cramps: heat related tightening of muscles in the stomach, arms or legs. Heat Edema: heat related swelling in the ankles and feet. Heat Exhaustion: A warning that your body cannot cool itself down, symptoms include thirst, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and heavy sweating Heat Stroke: A serious medical condition characterized by fainting, changes in behavior, a body temperature over 104 degrees, dry flushed skin, and an inability to sweat. This requires immediate medical attention. Situational heat stroke, which occurs in the absence of physical exertion, primarily affects the young and the elderly. Among the elderly, it can be influenced by medications such as antihistamines and diuretics. Most people who die from hyperthermia are over 50 years old. To reduce your risk of hyperthermia drink plenty of liquids (water is best; avoid alcohol and caffeine) and take frequent breaks in the shade.
