Jack Zipes, When Dreams Came True: Classical Fairy Tales And

Jack Zipes, When Dreams Came True Classical Fairy Tales and Their Tradition (2nd ed., New York, Routledge, 2007) Introduction—“Spells of Enchantment: An Overview of the History of Fairy Tales” adopts the usual Zipes position—fairy tales are strongly wish-fulfillment orientated, and there is much talk of humanity’s unquenchable desire to dream. “Even though numerous critics and psychologists such as C. G. Jung and Bruno Bettelheim have mystified and misinterpreted the fairy tale because of their own spiritual quest for universal archetypes or need to save the world through therapy, the oral and literary forms of the fairy tale have resisted the imposition of theory and manifested their enduring power by articulating relevant cultural information necessary for the formation of civilization and adaption to the environment…They emanate from specific struggles to humanize bestial and barbaric forces that have terrorized our minds and communities in concrete ways, threatening to destroy free will and human compassion. The fairy tale sets out, using various forms and information, to conquer this concrete terror through metaphors that are accessible to readers and listeners and provide hope that social and political conditions can be changed.’ pp.1-2 [For a writer rather quick to pooh-pooh other people’s theories, this seems quite a claim…] What the fairy tale is, is almost impossible of definition. Zipes talks about Vladimir Propp, and summarises him interestingly on pp.3-4, but in a way which detracts from what Propp actually said, I think, by systematizing it and reducing the element of narrator-choice which was central to Propp’s approach.

Speaking the Unspeakable: Women, Sex and the Dismorphmythic in Lovecraft, Angela

Speaking the Unspeakable: Women, Sex and the Dismorphmythic in Lovecraft, Angela Carter, Caitlin R. Kiernan and Beyond Gina Wisker One night I had a frightful dream in which I met my grandmother under the sea. She lived in a phosphorescent palace of many terraces, with gardens of strange leprous corals and grotesque brachiate efflorescences, and welcomed me with a warmth that may have been sardonic. (19361) I close my eyes and I see her, Jacova Angevine, the lunatic prophet from Salinas, pearls that were her eyes, cockles and mussels, alive, alive-o. (20032) H.P. Lovecraft is known for shying away from representations of women, as well as anything overtly sexual. His women are likely to be abject constructs, and the sex he refers to something evil, demonic, a pact with a Satanic creature, with the fishy folk, or white apes, each example of miscegenation leading to a threat to humankind. The insipidity, problematic allure, and treacherous fecundity of the women in Supernatural Horror in Literature (19273; SHL) set the tone for Lovecraft’s treatment of women and their sexual culpability in his tales. There is a filial legacy of Lovecraft’s work. Many male authors, including Robert Bloch and Neil Gaiman, have extended, built on, his writing, taken further the tropes, settings, stories and sometimes, like Gaiman in “Shoggoth’s Old Peculiar” (19984) and “Only the End of the World Again” (20005), they have also taken a comic turn. But perhaps surprisingly there is also an emerging legacy in work by women writers, notably Angela Carter and Caitlín R.

Stella, B.S., M.A. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 2013 ABSTRACT RHETORICS OF GIRLHOOD TRAUMA IN WRITING BY HOLLY GODDARD JONES, JOYCE CAROL OATES, SANDRA CISNEROS, AND JAMAICA KINCAID Stephanie M. Stella, B.S., M.A. Marquette University, 2013 This dissertation examines representations of sexual-based girlhood trauma in American literature during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Using critical theories in the fields of trauma, feminist, and rhetorical studies, it focuses on the evocative demands rhetorical structures place upon readers’ interpretations and completions of plot, which effectively draw readers’ attentions to the social conditions surrounding girlhood trauma. Thus, the literature of focus in this dissertation ultimately functions to expose, question, and undermine oppressive cultural constructs that facilitate the psychic and physical traumas of fictional characters. Equally important is that this study demonstrates the alignment between narrative strategies and sociological trauma theories, and, thus, demonstrates the value of literature in analyzing and understanding the social phenomenon of girlhood trauma.
