Arts College (W), Madurai-625 002 Abstract This paper deals with heritage tourism with special reference to Kazhugumalai. Heritage tourism or a study is commonly regarded by tourists in a space where historic artifacts are 1 presented. Heritage tourism is based upon the concept that each community has a story to tell. This is a rapidly growing market that is directed towards experiencing the local customs, traditions, arts, history, sites and culture that authentically represent a particular place. Key Words: Heritage, Tourism, Jain Sculptures, Culture, Architecture. Introduction Man, being a gregarious and social animal was much fascinated in undertaking tours 2 and travels from time immemorial. Tourism is a smokeless industry which attained significance because of the desire of people for visiting varied places of their likes. Tourism serves a window to look into the life and culture of a region of a nation. Kazhugumalai as Heritage Site (Southern Ellora) Kazhugumalai, as a heritage site depicts monolithic rock cut Jaina architecture of universal value. Kazhugumalai means hill inhabited by eagles, located 56 kms north of 3 Thirunelveli. It is a treasure trove of indescribably beautiful Jaina sculptures. There are ponds on either side of the hill and the hilltop offers a breathtaking view of paddy fields interspersed with Palmyra trees. Several Jain carvings are seen on the hill, which has made this place an important Jain pilgrim center. Historical Background of Kazhugumalai Kazhugumalai is a panchayat town in Kovilpatti taluk of Thoothukudi district. -

DISTRICT SURVEY REPORT FOR ROUGH STONE TIRUNELVELI DISTRICT TIRUNELVELI DISTRICT 2019 DISTRICT SURVEY REPORT-TIRUNELVELI 1 1. INTRODUCTION In conjunction to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Government of India Notification No.SO 3611 (E) dated 25.07.2018 and SO 190 (E) dated 20.01.2016 the District Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (DEIAA) and District Environment Appraisal Committee (DEAC) were constituted in Tirunelveli District for the grant of Environmental Clearance for category “B2” projects for quarrying of Minor Minerals. The main purpose of preparation of District Survey Report is to identify the mineral resources and develop the mining activities along with relevant current geological data of the District. The DEAC will scrutinize and screen scope of the category “B2” projects and the DEIAA will grant Environmental Clearance based on the recommendations of the DEAC for the Minor Minerals on the basis of District Survey Report. This District Mineral Survey Report is prepared on the basis of field work carried out in Tirunelveli district by the official from Geological Survey of India and Directorate of Geology and Mining, (Tirunelveli District), Govt. of Tamilnadu. Tirunelveli district was formed in the year 1790 and is one of the oldest districts in the state, with effect from 20.10.1986 the district was bifurcated and new district Thothukudi was formed carving it. Tirunelveli district has geographical area of 6759 sq.km and lies in the south eastern part of Tamilnadu state. The district is bounded by the coordinates 08°05 to 09°30’ N and 77°05’ to 78°25 E and shares boundary with Virudunagar district in north, Thothukudi district in east, Kanniyakumari district in south and with Kerala state in the West. -

Keywords – Temple History, poojas, festivals, Strucure, Statues. Introduction Kalugumalai is a panchayat town in kovilpatti Taluk of Thoothukudi district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Kalugumalai is 21km from kovilpatti and 22 km from Sankarankovil respectively. The ideal Kalugasalamoorthy is a rock cut temple. The ideal kalugasalamoorthy is worshiped as God in vettuvankovil temple in kalugumalai.It is a rockcut monolithic temple. Jain beds can be seen vettuvankovil in kalugumalai temple. It has an average elevation at 105 meters.It is strategically located between kovilpatti and sankarankovil and sankarankovil and served as ancient trade route from kovilpatti to courtallam and senkottai. There are two divisions and they are south kalugumalai and kottai kalugumalai. Kalugumalai, a heritage hillock site, which desicts monolithic rock architecture of universal value will get face life in the coming day. Introduction i) Geographical location of the district Traditionally known as “Pearl City” on account of the prevailing Pearl fish in the past in the area, Thoothukudi has a fascinating history. On 20 th October 1986 a new district, carved out of the erstwhile Tirunelveli district was born in Tamil Nadu and named after V.O.Chidambaranar, a great National leader. Since 1997 as in the case of other districts of Tamil Nadu, this district has also been named after its headquarters town Thoothukudi.
