Through use of Japanese popular culture these spaces create a visual narrative that promotes homogenous and monoracial stereotypes of the Nikkei community. Leveraging ethnographic observations of community gallery and festival spaces this work investigates how meaning is constructed and derived within Japantown spaces through the use of Japanese popular culture imagery. Furthermore, this thesis explores how such imagery reinforces Japanophilic delineations of the Nikkei community that distort the heterogeneous mixed-heritage make-up of the Japanese America. -

As a Brit in Japan, I was intrigued by the parallels Kelts sees between the British invasion of the States in the s and the Japanese invasion that has been ongoing since the late '70s or so. Volume 10, Issue 1 May 2013 The cultural dynamic of doujinshi and cosplay: Local anime fandom in Japan, USA and Europe Nicolle Lamerichs Maastricht University, Netherlands Abstract: Japanese popular culture unifies fans from different countries and backgrounds. Its rich participatory culture is beyond any other and flourishes around comics (manga), animation (anime), games and music. Japanese storytelling showcases elaborate story worlds whose characters are branded on many products. The sub genres of Japanese pop-culture and the lingua franca of their audiences shape Western fandom. In this article, I scrutinize the global dynamic of manga. I specifically focus on the creation of fan manga (‘doujinshi’) and dress- up (‘cosplay’) as two migratory fan practices. The form and content of fan works, and the organizational structure behind them, varies intensely per country. If manga is an international language and style, where is its international fan identity located? In this article, I explore this uncharted territory through ethnographic views of diverse Western and Japanese fan sites where these creative practices emerge. This ethnographic overview is thus concerned with the heterogeneous make-up and social protocols of anime fandom. Keywords: Anime fandom, doujinshi, cosplay, conventions, ethnography Introduction Japan’s global and exotic identity is historically rooted. In the nineteenth century, Euro- Americans performed their fascination for the island through ‘Orientalism’ in Western impressionist art, Zen gardens and architecture (Napier, 2007; Said, 1978). When World War II penetrated this culturally rich image, the fascination for Japan became more ambivalent, characterized by both fear and curiosity. By now, the country’s global identity, which lingers between East and West, inspires Western corporate businesses, art and media as it represents a mixture of spiritual traditions, strong labour and family morals, as well as an advanced technocapitalist model (Ivy, 1995; Wolferen, 1995). -

Schlueter, Ph.D. This thesis illustrates that the relationship between American students’ interests’ in Japanese culture and the Japanese language. The result of the thesis demonstrated that the majority of the college students are interested in Japanese popular culture upon their decisions to take a foreign language class. Particularly, video games are more prevalent than anime and manga among American college students. However, through Japanese language courses, they often expand their interests in other aspects of Japanese culture. The role of teacher is significantly important in order to raise students’ awareness to other aspects of culture. Academic year: 2019–2020 PREAMBLE CONCERNING COVID-19 Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of 2020, it should be kept in mind that the research conducted for the purpose of this thesis could not take place as originally intended. The outbreak of the pandemic had direct consequences for the process of completing this master’s thesis—at the time when I began my research, I resided in Finland as a student at the University of Helsinki. A significant part of this thesis relied on the access to source material, as well as access to translation by native speakers of Finnish and Swedish, that this location provided. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, I was unable to stay in Finland, and saw myself forced to leave the country. Before the borders closed, I flew out to Sweden, to be with my partner and family-in-law during this crisis. I was, overall, among those fortunate enough to be able to move ahead with their research throughout the pandemic. That is, no field work was conducted for the purpose of this thesis’ argument, meaning that closed borders and national lockdowns had no bearing on my research as such. -

These works have been overlooked as English literature of the British modern period, although Waley intended most of his translations to function as modern English literature. I include a short biography of Waley's formative years and maintain that aspects of his identity—Jewish, bisexual, and socialist—were important in the choice of his occupation and in the selection and interpretation of his texts. -

M.Sc. Thesis, 83 pages December 2017 Abstract Video games contain representations, and these can have effects on players, for example on the ways they understand certain concepts or see certain places. The purpose of this thesis is to delve into how Japan is represented in video games. With that target in mind, the video game Ôkami (Clover Studio, 2008) for Nintendo's Wii console has been analyzed as a case study, and the potential effects of its representations have been reflected on. In order to carry out this work, the context of the Japanese popular culture industry has been considered, while the particular perspective of a Japanophile has been adopted. The first concept refers to the combination of enterprises responsible of popularizing Japanese culture internationally through products (with manga, anime and video games as leaders) since the last years of the 20th century. Regarding Japanophiles, they are understood in this thesis as the most avid (non-Japanese) consumers of those products who, carried by a 'Japanophile' euphoria, have formed a social movement and an identity that are bound to Japanese culture. The methods employed have mainly been an extensive literature review and a game analysis.
