  • Proposed Producers' Cooperative in Barangay
LPU- Laguna Business and Accountancy Journal Vol. 1 No.2 September 2015 PROPOSED PRODUCERS’ COOPERATIVE IN BARANGAY MAKILING, CALAMBA CITY, LAGUNA Jeanne Cuyos, Shailini Garcia, Trisha Villanueva , Rance Vidal and Gilbert B. Sulla ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine if it is feasible to put up a Producers’ Cooperative in Barangay Makiling, Calamba City, Laguna. An interview was conducted with the Barangay Chairman of Barangay Makiling and the Cooperative Development Specialist of Calamba City Hall. In coordination with the Institutional Social Responsibility Office (ISRO) of Lyceum of the Philippines-Laguna, the proponents used the data gathered of the needs assessment of the residents of Districts 3, 4 and 5 of Barangay Makiling. The Producers’ Cooperative will be acting as a sub-contractor of Laguna Water Hyacinth Handicrafts Producers’ Association, Inc. (LAWHHPA) that will provide manpower and raw materials. The starting members will be the 94 community officials of Barangay Makiling. There were eighteen 18 residents who volunteered to be the official workers on the beginning stage of the cooperative. The cooperative will manufacture Water Hyacinth Handicraft Products made up of dried water hyacinth and will sell it to the Laguna Water Hyacinth Handicraft Producer’s Association, Inc. They will produce handicraft products such as bags, placemats, slippers, chairs, etc. The workers will provide quality products that will meet the standards of the Laguna Water Hyacinth Handicraft Producers’ Association. The cooperative aims to help uplift the living condition of the Barangay Makiling residents, especially the non-working females by providing a livelihood program. The cooperative will then help the environment by reducing the water hyacinth in lakes and swamps because it becomes a pest when it reproduces.

  • Philippine Prison Spectacles After Web 2.01
Postcolonial Text, Vol 9, No 4 (2014) Performing the Postcolonial: Philippine Prison Spectacles after Web 2.01 Áine Mangaoang St. Patrick’s College Dublin City University On June 27, 2009 within ten hours of the breaking news of Michael Jackson’s death, prison security official Byron F. Garcia arranged for a music and dance tribute to the King of Pop; this tribute was to be performed by over 1500 prisoners in front of a live audience of tourists and media corporations in the exercise yard of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre in the Philippines. Neatly dressed in identical bright orange prison jumpsuits with feet moving in matching black and white Chuck Taylor sneakers, the inmates danced to a ten-minute medley of Jackson’s hits – “Ben,” “I’ll Be There,” and “We are the World” – piped through the prison loudspeakers, with such precision and passion that one would be forgiven for thinking one was watching a professional, if slightly unorthodox, Broadway musical. Such a feat might have gone unnoticed by international media in the turbulent wake of Jackson’s death, if not for the fact that these prisoners were already internet stars who became bona fide internet celebrities following their 2007 YouTube interpretation of Michael Jackson’s 1982 epic music-video Thriller. With over fifty million views to date, the inmate performers – known as the “Dancing Inmates” of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre (CPDRC) – have since received attention from an array of mainstream news conglomerates (including Al Jazeera; BBC; CNN), independent DIY bloggers, and more recently, from academia.

11 SEPTEMBER 2020, FRIDAY Headline STRATEGIC September 11, 2020 COMMUNICATION & Editorial Date INITIATIVES Column SERVICE 1 of 2 Opinion Page Feature Article Cimatu aims to increase the width of Manila Bay beach Published September 10, 2020, 7:55 PM by Ellayn De Vera-Ruiz Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu said beach nourishment in Manila Bay may help increase the width of the beaches as they are “very narrow.” Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu (RTVM / MANILA BULLETIN) This was part of the DENR’s response to a letter sent by the office of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno last Sept. 7, seeking the agency’s clarification on the safety of dolomite to public health. In his response dated Sept. 8, Cimatu pointed out that beach nourishment is the practice of adding sand or sediment to beaches to combat erosion and increase beach width. Beach nourishment, he explained, should be applied in Manila Bay because “Manila Bay is not considered prone to coastal erosion as it is mostly protected by seawalls, but the beaches are very narrow.” He cited that under the writ of continuing Mandamus issued by the Supreme Court on Dec. 18, 2016, a marching order was given to 13 government agencies, including the DENR to spearhead the clean up, rehabilitation, and preservation of Manila Bay “to make it more suitable for swimming, skin diving, and other forms of contact recreation and for protection of coastal communities.” “After dredging and clean up of the Bay, it was agreed upon by members of the different agencies involved in the rehabilitation of Manila Bay that the initial beach nourishment in Manila Bay will be applied in segment between the area fronting the US Embassy and the Manila Yacht Club to mimic a sort of a ‘pocket beach,’ the northern portion protected by the compound of the US Embassy and the south side sheltered by the Mall of Asia compound,” the letter read.

  • Understanding the EF Lightning Protection System
E.F. International S.A. benefited from a unique experience in the atmospheric electricity field since the beginning of the 1970s. In 1982, E.F. patented the E.F. Carrier System of Lightning Protection which ensures the lightning protection required by the modern world since this system integrates the E.F. Lightning Carrier that conveys lightning in an electrically hermetic way. The E.F. Lightning Terminal uses the ESE technology. The E.F. Lightning Protection system is the only lightning protection system manufactured with a Quality Assurance System which meets the Swiss Standards SN 029 100 Category A, and is ISO 9001 rated, a standard which includes design/development, production, installation and servicing. The structure of the E.F. Lightning Carrier down conductor ensures the safe conveyance of lightning current from the terminal to the ground without "sideflashing" and "skin effect" which are hazardous to the structure and equipment inside the structure to be protected. It is the only lightning conductor that has incorporated the Transient Absorption Technology (TAT), screening the electromagnetic field due to lightning discharges. Capacitance of the E.F. Lightning Carrier to withstand the high voltage of lightning of 250 kV is certified by the manufacturer, NEXANS. The E.F. Lightning Carrier is flame-retardant allowing internal installation. E.F.'s track record of local installations is a proof of the system's superiority over other brands. E.F. has become a byword in the lightning protection industry, protecting high-rise structures, plants, telecommunication towers, golf courses, etc. In the most lightning-prone countries of the world, its comprehensive network of Licensees is supported by fully qualified professionals with extensive hands-on experience and expertise, a well-trained staff and an efficient sales network.

  • (UPOU). an Explorat
his paper is a self-reflection on the state of openness of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). An exploratory and descriptive study, it aims not only to define the elements of openness of UPOU, but also to unravel the causes and solutions to the issues and concerns that limit its options to becoming a truly open university. It is based on four parameters of openness, which are widely universal in the literature, e.g., open admissions, open curricula, distance education at scale, and the co-creation, sharing and use of open educational resources (OER). It draws from the perception survey among peers, which the author conducted in UPOU in July and August 2012. It also relies on relevant secondary materials on the subject. What if you could revisit and download the questions you took during the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test)? I received information that this will soon be a possibility. It’s not yet official though. For some people, including yours truly, this is the same set of questions that made and unmade dreams. Not all UPCAT takers make it. Only a small fraction pass the test. Some of the passers see it as a blessing. Some see it as fuel, firing their desire to keep working harder. Some see it as an entitlement — instant membership to an elite group. Whatever its worth, the UPCAT is the entryway to the University of the Philippines, a scholastic community with a unique and celebrated tradition spanning more than a century. But take heed — none of its legacy would have been possible if not for the hard work of Filipino taxpayers.
