Neuware - The British Touring Car Championship is a touring car racing series held each year in the United Kingdom. The Championship was established in 1958 as the British Saloon Car Championship and has run to various rules over the years 'production cars', then FIA Group 1 or 2 in the late 1960s and 1970s, and then Group A in the 1980s, when in 1987, the series took on its current name. (A lower-key Group N series for production cars ran for most of the 1990s). The championship was initially run with a mix of classes, divided according to engine capacity, racing simultaneously. This oen meant that a driver who chose the right class could win the overall championship without any chance of overall race wins, thereby devaluing the title for the spectators for example, in the 1980s Chris Hodgetts won two overall titles in a small Toyota Corolla prepared by Hughes Of Beaconsfield, at that time a Mercedes-Benz/Toyota main dealer when most of the race wins were going to much larger cars; and while the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500s were playing at the front of the field, Frank Sytner took a title in a Class B BMW M3 and John Cleland's first title was won in a small Class C Vauxhall Astra. 156 pp. Englisch.     The Factory Built, Le Mans Entry Ex - Hugus, Jopp, Miles, Olthoff, Hawkins, Schlesser 1963 AC Shelby Cobra Le Mans Coupe Chassis Number: CSX 2142 Registration Number: 645 CGT • The first of three Shelby Le Mans Coupes built by the AC Cars factory for the first Cobra Le Mans effort in 1963 where the Sunday Times sponsored team was managed by Stirling Moss with Carroll Shelby in attendance on behalf of the Ford Motor Company, and the brainchild of Shelby’s partner in imagining the Cobra concept, Ed Hugus. • Fitted with a special experimental highly modified Ford 289 V8 engine for Le Mans by Phil Remington and Shelby America on the insistence of the Ford Motor Company, unknown to Hugus at the time. • Taken over by John Willment to run the European competition Cobra operation for Shelby following Le Mans and tested with Ken Miles. CSX 2142 was entered for the 1963 RAC Tourist Trophy at Goodwood but failed scrutineering on the grounds of modifications. • Sold to Ford of France following a very successful South African tour with Willment. Driven by Jo Schlesser over the ’64 and ’65 seasons for Ford France taking victories along the way. • Restored in the ‘90s to Ford of France livery by Yvan Mahe before going back to Le Mans livery with Kevin Kivlochan in 2001 and then being further restored for Frank Sytner by Simon Hadfield Motorsport. • In the current ownership since 2009 and raced at the best historic events throughout Europe while being maintained at Pearsons Engineering throughout. Winner of the 2013 Tour Auto with the current owner and Gary Pearson, with other highlights including 4th overall in the RAC TT at the 2011 Goodwood Revival with Pearson and Jackie Oliver.

Was it really 30 years ago that the Indy cars (or USAC cars as they were then known) came to Britain for the fi rst time? The British weather did its best to spoil John Webb’s great initiative and the fi rst three days were bedevilled by rain so that the race had to be postponed from Saturday to Sunday. But when they raced they did not disappoint with AJ Foyt, an Indianapolis legend if ever there was one, charging through from the fi fth row of the grid in his Coyote-Ford to be challenging Rick Mears in the Penske- Cosworth PC6 for the lead when the rain returned and the race was suspended. On the restart there was no stopping Anthony Joseph who surged past Rick into Stowe within a couple of laps and stayed ahead until the rain returned for a second time and that was that. Here we see the great man heading into the Woodcote chicane on his way to one of his rare wins in Europe. The small matter of the 1967 Le Mans 24 Hours (with Dan Gurney) was the other. As a Monegasque resident for some years, and winner for Wolf two years earlier, this is “his” circuit. He has arrived hot from his win at Zolder two weeks earlier which has taken him into the lead of the World Championship for the first time. In first qualifying on Thursday, Ferrari team-mate Gilles Villeneuve tops the time sheets but on Saturday Jody rises to the challenge and secures pole position from Gilles by 0.07 sec which he then celebrates with a spectacular burn out from Tabac to the swimming pool. As Jody converts that pole into a lead which he will never relinquish, Gilles is outgunned off the line by Niki Lauda’s Brabham BT48-Alfa which has rocketed away from fourth on the grid. So it is ‘King Rat’ not Gilles who follows Jody for the first two laps while behind the second Ferrari are the Ligier JS11 of last year’s winner Patrick Depailler, his team-mate Jacques Laffite, Didier Pironi’s Tyrrell 009, Alan Jones in the Williams FW07 and Jochen Mass’s Arrows A1B.
