I truly thank Him. vii A Study on Jack London’s The Call of the Wild: An Application of Organizational Behavior Theories Kwangjin Lee, PhD The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 Supervisor: Jeffrey L. Meikle Abstract: This dissertation examines Jack London’s The Call of the Wild (1903) from a business organization perspective. The novel has long been read as a Naturalistic work with primitiveness and virility at its core. However, this study focuses on London’s presentation of the environment of dog-sledding in the Klondike, into which the dog Buck, his main character, is thrown, as not only primitive but also distinguished by complex organizational characteristics. The novel traces Buck's experiences with several groups of masters, each exhibiting a different leadership style. Buck begins as a mere “hand” in his organization, but he fights for leadership and eventually proves his excellence by rising to the leader position among the team. Although Jack London was never an organization man, his experience as a literary businessman and his previous experience as a manual laborer helped him capture the zeitgeist of a time when Americans experienced the peak of industrialization and, as a result, the ever increasing influence of business and business organizations in American society. London is one of the originators of a genre that might be referred to as business fiction. Two theories of Organizational Behavior, which is a field in the academic discipline of Management, were used for this study: David C. McClelland’s Achievement viii Motivation Theory and Robert J. House’s Path-Goal Leader Effectiveness Theory. Using McClelland’s theory, this study found that Buck has a high need for Achievement, and his high achievement motivation is contrasted with that of the other characters—both human and canine. Buck’s character in the novel is close to that of an entrepreneur as defined by McClelland, and thus the novel can be read as a story of a businessman who rises to become CEO owing to exceptional abilities as a business leader. In addition, this study applies House’s theory in evaluating the impact of the various leadership styles of human masters on the behavior and performance of subordinate members of their dog teams. Durham: Duke UP, 1996. x + 289 pp. In writing about authors like Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and especially Jack London, all of whom carefully shaped their larger-than-life exploits to fit recognizable personae for public consumption, it is difficult not to begin by reading the works through the master text of the life. Resisting this temptation to move from the life to the works, which is, according to Earle Labor, a familiar starting point for earlier critical studies of London, Jonathan Auerbach instead reverses the process. Male Call demonstrates that the elaborate and purposeful self-portraiture that London undertook in his early works (1898-1904) allowed him to create a "trademark" self to circulate in the competitive turn-of-the-century literary marketplace. In this complex, well- researched, and rewarding study, Auerbach analyzes the material conditions of the works' production and of the texts themselves through the mediating ground of London's changing self-representations. In Male Call, Auerbach argues that this self for London is not the basis for but a "consequence of the very quest for public approval," a "corporate entity" that guarantees the production of certain qualities--authenticity, celebrity, personality, and authority among them--in London's writing. In a similar way, the punning multilevel trope of mail/male delivery from which the title is drawn suggests literally and symbolically the transmission of letters and writing, professionalism and masculinity.

Flora Wellman in San Francisco Daughter of Marshall Daniel Wellman, known as” The Wheat King” of Massillon, Ohio. Flora was age 3 when mother died, typhoid fever at age 13, ran away at age 16 to her sister for a few years, left Ohio after the Civil War, went to Seattle at age 30 to board with former mayor of Springfield, Ohio, and his wife. It was in their home she met William Chaney, astrologer, 22 years older. She and Chaney separately went to San Francisco in 1874. Life with William Chaney She lived with Chaney for about a year, assisting him with lectures, until she became pregnant. Chaney said Flora had been having sex with two other men, because he was impotent. They argued, she tried suicide causing uproar in city, he left town. She had her baby with the name John Griffith Chaney on the birth certificate. Chaney offered a different account of the “suicide.” John London Flora was not able to nurse, so a wet nurse, Virginia Prentiss, who had just lost her baby, was able to provide the precious milk. Jack lived in the Prentiss household until he could be weaned. Virginia’s husband, Alonzo, knew a fellow carpenter named John London. This connection is how Flora met and married John and gave little “Jack” his new last name. Virginia called him “Jackie” which is probably the reason Jack London took on the name. As Jack grew up the Prentiss' were part of his family.

When ' 'Doctor Moses" suggests that she might find the social sciences most interesting, Mary Kittridge responds with amiable indiscrimination: "Well, social and unsocial ... I like them all."1 This representation of Greenwich Village radicalism as fundamentally trivial and dilettantish is a familiar one, and not least so from the writings of onetime rebels such as Eastman and Walter Lippmann. It is not a wholly accurate picture, especially with regard to socialists' interests in the sciences—social and otherwise. The scholarship on American socialism just before World War I has often failed to take seriously the ideas associated with the movement, and has tended to treat as a homogeneous and rather unoriginal group the disputatious array of radical intellectuals who attempted to put socialism on a new scientific footing. Writers associated with the Masses, the New Review and the Seven Arts have certainly been seen as interesting, colorful and even as leavening influences in a society struggling to shrug off its Victorian hangover and enter the modern age. But while it is quite proper to place them within the context of a more general upheaval in western culture, this is also to risk losing sight of their specific attempts as intellectuals to give new shape and direction to a political movement.

While London's thinking on socialism is commonly taken as the idiosyncratic garble of an egomaniac who sold out to the capitalists he pretended to despise, the orthodox conservatism of his socialism is generally overlooked. Since the time when "collectivism" and "individualism" became enshrined under the names "Communism" and "Fascism" as official national ideologies, it has been easy to distinguish discordant elements in London's thought. And certainly many of Lon­ don's friends were appalled at his inconsistencies. But for many Progres­ sive-era socialists, London's description of socialism as "group individual­ ism" struck all the right resonances. After all, both strains were anti- bourgeois, revolutionary, violent and anarchic. And both openly capi­ talized on the current national "gusto" mania. In fact, so many literary socialists were exponents of this bipolar "superman socialism" that it can fairly be said that London—given his eccentricities—was at least operat­ ing within a tradition, even adapting a cliché. Merging the vision of the Just Society with the idea of the romantic hero, London was merely advo­ cating the most popular and influential form of literary conservatism—as well as literary socialism—in the first decade of the century. In formulating this hybrid, London was responding to trends which influenced many of the leading socialist-intellectuals and those who preached socialism while standing outside the movement itself. Edward Bellamy, for example, forecasted a serenely dull society of the year 2000 (Looking Backward, 1888) which was to be governed by a single syndicate representing the people, with little effective democracy.
