Su uso etnobotánico ha ayudado a sustentar numerosos pueblos. Hoy, unos 40 géneros de Asteráceas son relevantes en alimentación humana y animal, fuentes de aceites fijos, aceites esenciales, forraje, miel y polen, edulcorantes, especias, colorantes, insecticidas, caucho, madera, leña o celulosa. -

One species, D. integrifolia, has been recently reported as introduced in the New World from a pair of collections from Guatemala. During field work in the state of Chiapas in south- ern Mexico, the species was found and collected. This is the first record of both the genus and species in Mexico and the second record for these taxa in the Americas. Question: Can D. integrifolia occur in more areas in the New World besides those known from Guatemala and Chiapas? Studied species: Dichrocephala integrifolia Study site: Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Methods: An ecological niche model was made and it was projected into the New World. Abstract Based on the prevalence of diarrheal diseases in childhood, it is essential to know the types of plants or Gyllyandeson de Araújo animals involving the practices of traditional medicine in their treatment. Received 7 July 2015 During the year 2013 86 persons were interviewed in 9 rural communities in Pauini and Xapuri Accepted 1 August 2015 ePublished 7 August 2015 that were known for their knowledge and use of medicinal plants, After each interview, walks were made (walk in the woods), with the main informant of the family, for identification of plants and to collect the samples of the species indicated. A total of 86 plant species were indicated by seringueiros and ribeirinhos for the treatment of malaria and for associated symptoms, while 26 species were indicated exclusively for the treatment of malaria, of which 2 had no previous indication of use for that purpose. Among the plants mentioned in the survey, we highlight the 10 most cited and used by respondents living in the 2 regions. -

The Case of Some French-lexifier Creoles by Jo-Anne Ferreira and David Holbrook UWI, St. Augustine /SIL International 1.0 Introduction This paper is a compilation of three recent, separate surveys of three French-lexifier Creoles from three English-speaking nations. The main goal of these surveys was to determine the current ethnolinguistic vitality of these language varieties (i.e., are these varieties really endangered?). The three French-lexifier Creoles in question are those spoken in Grenada and Carriacou, in Trinidad, and in Louisiana in the USA. David Holbrook conducted the surveys in Grenada and Carriacou, and Louisiana. Jo-Anne Ferreira conducted the survey in Trinidad. 2.0 Background information Grenada Grenada has two Creole languages, a French-Lexifier Creole (GFC) and a English- Lexifier Creole (GEC). The existence of a French-Lexifier Creole is the result of the early French colonisation of Grenada. Today this French-Lexifier Creole is reported to be “spoken by only a very limited section of the older population of Carriacou and the northern districts of Grenada” (Holm 1989:376). Others have reported that this French-Lexifier Creole may possibly be in a situation of decline or even near language death. It has also been reported that the vitality of this Creole is stronger in Carriacou. -

Made available courtesy of George Thieme Verlag: http://www.thieme-connect.com *** Note: Figures may be missing from this format of the document Abstract: A phytochemical investigation of the CHCl3-soluble extract of the entire plant of Egletes viscosa (Asteraceae), collected in Peru, afforded two new labdane glycosides, 13-hydroxy-7-oxolabda8,14-diene 13(R)-0-a-L- arabinopyranoside and 13–hydroxy-7-oxolabda-8,14-diene 13(R)-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside, along with four known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Article: Egletes viscosa (L.) Less, (Asteraceae) is a small herb that is commonly known as "piro-sacha" and "macela-da- terra" in Peru and Brazil, respectively. It has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases, including gastrointestinal disorders and as an emmenagogue [1], [2], [3]. Several biologically active flavonoids and terpenoids have been reported from this plant by a team of Brazilian researchers [1], [3], [4], although, to the best of our knowledge, it has not been examined for anticancer activity. -

Therefore, our objectives were to identify and quantify the aquatic macrophytes of North Brazilian states, analyzing herbaria data plataforms (SpeciesLink and Flora do Brasil). The checklist was produced by bibliographic search (articles published between 1980 and 2000), herbaria collections of the platforms SpeciesLink and Flora do Brasil and field expeditions, where we utilized asystematic sampling. We also analyzed the floristic similarity of aquatic macrophytes among Northern Brazil, wetlands of distinct Brazilian regions and the Neotropics. We recorded 539 species, of which 48 are endemic to Brazil. -

DICHROCEPHALA INTEGRIFOLIA (ASTEREAE: GRANGEINAE) IN GUATEMALA, AN EXOTIC GENUS AND SPECIES NEW TO THE AMERICAS JOHN F. PRUSKI Missouri Botanical Garden P.O. Box 299 St. Louis, Missouri 63166 ABSTRACT Dichrocephala integrifolia is documented, based on three recent collections from Guatemala, as a genus and species new to the Americas. Genera of Astereae subtribe Grangeinae known in the Americas include Egletes , Plagiocheilus, and now Dichrocephala . KEY WORDS: America, Asteraceae, Astereae, Central America, Compositae, Cuchumatanes, Dichrocephala , Grangeinae, Guatemala, Huehuetenango, Mesoamerica, Neotropics. The genus Dichrocephala L'Hér. ex DC. (Compositae: Astereae: Grangeinae) was revised by Fayed (1979), who recognized four species, but Beentje (2002) recognized only three species. Dichrocephala was placed in Astereae subtribe Grangeinae Benth. & Hook. f. by Fayed (1979), Bremer (1994), Nesom (1994), and Nesom and Robinson (2007). Nesom and Robinson (2007) recognized 16 genera within the Old World-centered Grangeinae. Characters useful in recognizing Grangeinae are the often disciform capitula with marginal pistillate florets usually pluriseriate and with white corollas, phyllaries never prominently resinous-veined, epaleate receptacles usually convex to conical, papillose triangular style branch appendages, and compressed erostrate cypselae often (at least in the Americas) epappose or nearly so. Among American Grangeinae, Dichrocephala is diagnosed by disciform (vs. radiate or pseudobilabiate) capitula. Nesom (2000) gave Egletes Cass. and Centipeda Lour. as the only American genera of subtribe Grangeinae, but Panero (2007) modified this by treating Centipeda as the only genus of the African- centered tribe Athroismeae present in the Americas.
