Journal of World Literature 5 (2020) 568–586 brill.com/jwl Intermedial Translation as Circulation Chu Tien-wen, Taiwan New Cinema, and Taiwan Literature Jessica Siu-yin Yeung soas University of London, London, UK [email protected] Abstract We generally believe that literature first circulates nationally and then scales up through translation and reception at an international level. In contrast, I argue that Taiwan literature first attained international acclaim through intermedial translation during the New Cinema period (1982–90) and was only then subsequently recognized nationally. These intermedial translations included not only adaptations of literature for film, but also collaborations between authors who acted as screenwriters and film- makers. The films resulting from these collaborations repositioned Taiwan as a mul- tilingual, multicultural and democratic nation. These shifts in media facilitated the circulation of these new narratives. Filmmakers could circumvent censorship at home and reach international audiences at Western film festivals. The international success ensured the wide circulation of these narratives in Taiwan. 《藝術學研究》 2009 年 12 月,第五期,頁 147-163 Pearl Lost in the Sea: Wan Jen, An Overlooked Director of the Taiwan New Cinema Chen, Ping-hao 陳平浩∗ Marking the dawn of a new era in Taiwan cinema, The Taste of Apple , the third installment of The Sandwich Man (1983), affirms Wan Jen's inclusion in the New Taiwan Cinema filmic movement. The film attests to significant differences between Wan Jen and his Taiwan contemporaries in addition to mapping out Wan Jen’s filmic concerns in his works from the 80s to the 90s. In this film Wan Jen brings Hou’s nostalgic villagers from the country to the city, and shows a working class view of the city tellingly different from Edward Yang’s bourgeois Taipei. “City vs. country conflict” is one of the dominant themes in Taiwan New Cinema. In the 70s, Taiwan’s economy took-off and earned the glorious label of the “Taiwan Miracle.” During these gilded years, Taiwan society underwent rapid industrialization, modernization, and urbanization. To make more money and earn a better life, lots of villagers “went north” in Taiwan, flocking to Taipei city with dreams of gold-digging. At the same time, the rural south’s traditional communities encountered the threat of urbanization and began to fall apart. Hou Hsiao-hsien’s autobiographical works in the 80s, especially A Time to Live, A Time to Die (1985) and Dust in the Wind (1986), express his nostalgia toward the (lost and imagined) “pre-modern Taiwan” in poetic forms. ABSTRACT TAIWANESE IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL FAMILIES IN THE CINEMA OF ANG LEE Ting-Ting Chan, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Scott Balcerzak, Director This dissertation argues that acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee should be regarded as a Taiwanese transnational filmmaker. Thus, to best understand his work, a Taiwanese sociopolitical context should be employed to consider his complicated national identity as it is reflected in his films across genres and cultures. Previous Ang Lee studies see him merely as a transnational Taiwanese-American or diasporic Chinese filmmaker and situate his works into a broader spectrum of either Asian-American culture or Chinese national cinema. In contrast, this dissertation argues his films are best understood through a direct reference to Taiwan’s history, politics, and society. The chapters examine eight of Lee’s films that best explain his Taiwanese national identity through different cultural considerations: Pushing Hands (1992) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) are about maternity; The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) consider homosexuality; The Ice Storm (1997) and Taking Woodstock (2009) represent a collective Taiwanese view of America; and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Lust, Caution (2007) reflect and challenge traditions of Taiwan Cinema. The eight films share three central leitmotifs: family, a sympathetic view of cultural outsiders, and a sympathy for the losing side. Through portraying various domestic relations, Lee presents archetypal families based in filial piety, yet at the same time also gives possible challenges represented by a modern era of equal rights, liberalism, and individualism – which confront traditional Taiwanese-Chinese family views. -

Box 45205, SEATTLE, Washington 98105-0205 European edition, March 1987 Published 6 times a year ISSN number: 1027-3999 29 Profile of a human rights lawyer Yao Chia-wen and 25 other political prisoners released On 20 January 1987, Taiwan’s most prominent human rights lawyer, Mr. Yao Chia- wen, was released from prison. Together with him, 25 other political prisoners (imprisoned in separate cases) were granted parole. Mr. Yao was arrested after the “Kaohsiung Incident” of December 1979, and — together with seven other major opposition leaders — he was subsequently tried by a military tribunal. Mr. Yao was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. At the time of his arrest, he served as legal counsel for Formosa, the opposition political journal, which was the driving force behind the movement for democratic reform in Taiwan. After Mr. Yao ‘s arrest, his wife Chou Ching-yü became Taiwan’s foremost human rights advocate. In December 1980, she ran for a seat in the National Assembly and was elected with the highest number of votes — thereby vindicating her husband. Other relatives of “Kaohsiung” defendants, such as Mrs. Hsu Jung-shu and Mr. Huang T’ien- fu, also won their respective races for a seat in the Legislative Yuan. Chou Ching-yu subsequently set up CARE Center to assist political prisoners and their families, and started to publish CARE magazine, which became Taiwan’s most well-known human rights publication. -

Until this Spring, only the democratic opposition of the DPP and a few progressive KMT legislators advocated that Taiwan become a full member of the United Nations. However, in April 1993 Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui and Foreign Minister Frederick Chien formally announced that they would start working towards UN membership, and hope to achieve this goal within three years. Taiwan Communiqué comment: we welcome this new policy of the Taipei authori- ties. It is the first step of Taiwan in the direction of becoming a full and equal member of the international community, and casts aside the old policy of political isolation into which the old KMT regime had manoeuvered itself. However, the approach used by the Taipei authorities is still not quite right. The KMT government continues to present itself as Republic of China on Taiwan, and strives for a One China two seats representa- tion in the United Nations. This is a non-viable op- tion, which should be dis- carded right away. -

In particular, the thesis traces the confluence of the movement into pro-independence "Taiwanese" and pro-reunification "Chinese" nationalist groups. Some scholars have suggested that a strong "Taiwanese" nationalism emerged as an immediate response to the ceding of the island to Japan in 1895, and has remained as an unchanging force in Taiwanese politics to this day. The author shows that this is not the case: nationalism as a strong political force did not emerge until the early 1920s, and was initially overwhelmingly "Chinese" rather than "Taiwanese" in content. -

For several years the Taiwan authorities have attempted to inhibit the activities of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. In 1975 the government confiscated 2,200 Bibles printed in the Taiwanese language. Since 1977, a number of issues of the weekly Taiwan Church News mysteri- ously “disappeared” in the mail. In the summer of 1979 the authorities introduced a law on “Churches, Syna- gogues and Temples” in the Legislative Yuan, which would have given the government power to disband a religious organization if it was not in compliance with Kuomintang party policies. The law was quietly shelved after strong expressions of concern were voiced both in Taiwan and abroad. In April 1980 the General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church, the Reverend Kao Chun-ming, was eliminated from active participation in the Church’s affairs: the authorities arrested him on a “failure to report to the authorities” charge in connection with the case of oppo- " ... never in the long history has such a "mail worm" been sition leader Shih Ming-teh — who can be described as attached to our publication."
