FROM THE PASTORS’ DESK In contrast to what we heard last Sunday from John’s Gospel, JESUS CALLS

where Andrew and his brother Simon took the initiative them- HIS FIRST DISCIPLES selves to follow Jesus, this Sunday we hear in Mark’s Gospel where Jesus took the initiative himself to call His first disciples. As mentioned last week, it was more typical of first-century rabbinical schools for students to seek out rabbis, asking them if they could be their disciples. However, in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus broke away from that tradition and began calling forth His own disciples whom He wanted to follow Him and learn from Him. Jesus is said to have first called four fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Simon and Andrew were brothers. Jesus promised them that He would make them “fishers of men,” which they did become. James and John were also brothers. Mark does not report Jesus’ words of invitation to them, but He does report that they immediately left behind their fishing interests as well as their father, Zebedee, who was in a boat with them. Mark’s Gospel account of Jesus calling After John had been arrested, Jesus came to forth His disciples was told with a great Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: “This sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus was a person of action, and events occur is time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is in rapid succession. We see this in today’s at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Gospel. Time was of the essence; the fishermen immediately put aside their As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw livelihood to become Jesus’ disciples. The Simon and his brother Andrew casting their Kingdom of God is here and now. The time of fulfillment is at hand. How might our nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus lives be different if we shared in their said to them, “Come after me, and I will enthusiasm and sense of immediacy to proclaim that the Kingdom of God is at make you fishers of men.” ~ Mark 1:16-18 hand? After reading these stories from the Bible, the class discussed how we all should obey God just as Noah and Abraham did. Sometimes we don’t obey God and we sin. We must then seek forgiveness. God made a promise to us when He sent Jesus to save us. If we believe in Jesus and follow Him, we too will benefit from a covenant with God. We will go to heaven! To do this, we must all keep our promises, and always do as God wants us to do. The class then learned that when we confess our sins, we once again make a promise to God to do good. These lessons were a great way to lead into the class’ preparation for their First Reconciliation.
