Downton Abbey – Review
The Vallès Oriental’s leading language school is pleased to offer you this review, crossword and contest. Downton Abbey – Review The film begins in 1927, about a year and a half after the TV series ended. Robert and Cora Crawley, the Earl and Countess of Grantham are informed that King George V and Queen Mary will visit Downton Abbey as part of their royal tour. Members of the royal household staff descend upon the estate to prepare for the visit, ruffling the feathers of Downton's own staff. Then, Lady Bagshaw, Queen Mary's lady-in-waiting, has a property feud with the Crawleys. There is bound to be friction because of that. Aside from the emotional turbulence, there's a tension in the air as an assassin is apparently on the loose. How the different elements get played out and whether the Crawley family is able to weather these storms is the plot in a nutshell. Dowager Countess Violet (Dame Maggie Smith) is as full of repartee as ever. She's matched in her one- liners by her friend Isobel (Penelope Wilton). Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier), the head butler, is kind of unprepared for the royal visit and is temporarily replaced by the series' favourite Carson (Jim Carter). Barrow does utilise the off time to explore who he really is. Tom Branson (Allen Leech), the former family chauffeur and Irish revolutionary, gets to prove his loyalty to the King in unexpected ways. Simon Jones and Geraldine James make for the perfect royal couple while Imelda Staunton is perfect as Maud Bagshaw, the one woman who dares to take on Violet. -

January 13, 2015 Audra McDonald and Alan Cumming in a Reading of ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ By Patrick Healy Could a Broadway revival of the acclaimed musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” be on the horizon? A multiday reading of the show, the 1993 Tony Award winner for best musical, was held last week with three big theater names playing the major roles: Audra McDonald as the title character, Alan Cumming as the gay prisoner Molina, and Steven Pasquale as the Marxist revolutionary Valentin. The Tony-winning director John Tiffany (“Once”) oversaw the reading, which was organized by the producer Tom Kirdahy (“It’s Only a Play”). Mr. Kirdahy is married to the show’s book writer, Terrence McNally, and is working with the “Spider Woman” composer, John Kander, on this spring’s Broadway revival of “The Visit.” (“Spider Woman” has lyrics by Fred Ebb.) Mr. Kirdahy, in a telephone interview on Tuesday, said that he was “thrilled” with the reading and that the actors and Mr. Tiffany were pleased as well. “I think everyone is interested in having further conversations, but there is no game plan for a production at this point,” Mr. Kirdahy said. Based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, “Spider Woman” centers on the relationship between two prisoners in a Latin American country and the fixation of one of them on movies and a diva known for many roles, including a deadly spider woman. The show ran on Broadway for two years and won Tonys for its three main actors as well as best book and best score, among others. -

MASTERPIECE "Downton Abbey, Season 5"
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Laura Carmichael Lady Edith Crawley in Downton Abbey Lady Edith has been through a lot since the early seasons of Downton Abbey, when she was treated like the ugly duckling of the Crawley clan. She’s been jilted at the alter, had a fling with a married man, and now—unbeknownst to her parents and sister— she’s a mother! Actress Laura Carmichael plays this complex character with charm and vulnerability. A graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, she headlined a 2012 production of Uncle Vanya in the West End opposite Anna Friel and Sam West to critical acclaim, and she will appear in a new film adaptation of Madame Bovary opposite Mia Wasikowska and Paul Giamatti. Carmichael's television and film credits include The Heart of Thomas Hardy, House at the End of Our Street, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, in which she played Sal opposite Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Her previous stage appearances include The London Cuckolds, A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, The Vicar of Wakefield, and As You Like It—all at the Bristol Old Vic. She has recently appeared in glamorous shoots for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Michelle Dockery Lady Mary Crawley in Downton Abbey Emerging from her deep depression after Matthew’s sudden death at the end of Season 3, Lady Mary is now an active partner in running Downton Abbey. Since the estate seems to be shaping up, she can focus on what to do about her suitors. Decisions! Decisions! Actress Michelle Dockery has sailed through Lady Mary’s troubles with critical accolades, including Best Actress nominations for the Golden Globe® Award and for a string of Emmys® (Seasons 2, 3, and 4). -
