INT. MRS HUGHES’ ROOM. DOWNTON. EVE.

CARSON joins MRS HUGHES for a cup of tea.

CARSON The dye is cast. I've accepted. His lordship told me to take it.

MRS HUGHES There you are, then. CARSON But he was sad. Not with me. But, maybe because things are changing.

MRS HUGHES Well they are. Whether we're sad about it or not.

INT. SERVANT’S HALL. DAY.

The SERVANTS are having tea.

BATES is talking to ANNA.

BATES I hope you're right about Lord Gillingham. What would I have felt if I'd inherited a family with you?

ANNA You'd have loved them, I hope.

BATES I would but I can't deny I'd prefer one of my own.

ANNA says nothing.

BATES (CONT) You'd feel the same.

ANNA Well, they do say a mother's love is the strongest love there is.

BAXTER looks up and sees THOMAS enter.

ANNA (CONT) But that's God's hands. There's nothing we can do.

BATES I can think of one thing.

ANNA Mr Bates, that sort of talk is beneath you.

BATES I stand corrected.

MOLESLEY is sat by the fireplace and sees THOMAS walking over to BAXTER.

THOMAS whispers to BAXTER. THOMAS I'll have it out of you.

She says nothing. MOLESLEY leans in.

MOLESLEY Fancy a breath of air before the gong?

BAXTER Thank you, Mr Molesley.

She leaves with him. THOMAS turns to JIMMY.

THOMAS What's the matter with you? You've not said a word all afternoon.

JIMMY I went to the village and telephoned her; to reason with her. And I think it were a mistake.

THOMAS It was never going to put her off.

JIMMY Exactly. The trouble is, she hates getting older. And if you ask me, that's at the bottom of it.

THOMAS Still, it's pathetic for a lady to be pining over a .

JIMMY Excuse me. I think it shows very good taste.

INT. DRAWING ROOM. DOWER . EVE.

VIOLET greets LADY SHACKLETON as she enters the room.

VIOLET My dear Lady Shackleton, how kind and you’re on your way somewhere?

LADY SHACKLETON I am and I can't stay.

They both sit.

LADY SHACKLETON (CONT) I'm dining with Philip and his wife sulks all night if you're a minute late.

VIOLET You should write a book: Daughters-in-law and how to survive them.

LADY SHACKLETON I like yours.

VIOLET Yes, Cora does very well. Even if one cannot always rely on her instincts.

LADY SHACKLETON I'd exchange her for mine in a trice.

VIOLET Tell me, how well do you know Lord Merton?

LADY SHACKLETON Oh, you know. We've seen each other at parties for forty years.

VIOLET I worry that he's finding things difficult since his wife died. You're a widow. You know what he's going through.

LADY SHACKLETON I suppose so but I never saw them as very devoted. I should've thought he was glad to be rid of her. I would be.

VIOLET Then his sons are quite difficult.

LADY SHACKLETON I know what that's like.

VIOLET Could you come to luncheon on Saturday? cheer him up?

LADY SHACKLETON Well I’d love to.

VIOLET Oh!

LADY SHACKLETON Of course a single peer with a good estate won't be lonely long if he doesn't want to be.

VIOLET You sound like Mrs Bennett. They peal with happy laughter.

INT. SERVANTS STAIRCASE. DOWNTON. EVE.

MOLESLEY is with BAXTER.

MOLESLEY But what is he on about?

BAXTER He thinks I know something about Mr Bates.

MOLESLEY And do you?

BAXTER Maybe. Mr Bates may have done something he wouldn't want known.

MOLESLEY "Something"? What do you mean a crime or...?

BAXTER I'm not sure. I know he took a journey which I think he'd deny.

MOLESLEY Look, I don't want to know anymore, but a pound to a penny, Mr Barrow thinks he can use it against Mr Bates.

BAXTER says nothing.

MOLESLEY (CONT) Report him to her ladyship. She'd soon put a stop to it.

BAXTER I can't. It's complicated but I can't.

MOLESLEY looks down and turns his head left to right.

BAXTER (CONT) What is it?

MOLESLEY What’s what?

BAXTER You're doing something funny with your head. Sort of ... tilting it.

MOLESLEY I'm not, am I? How do you think I look? BAXTER Why? Have you got a rash?

MOLESLEY I’ve not got a rash.

BAXTER That's all right, then.

MOLESLEY No, what I meant was ... How old would you say I am?

BAXTER I don't know. Maybe ... fifty two?

MOLESLEY Oh.

BAXTER Why? How old are you?

MOLESLEY Fifty one.

ROSE But what happened exactly?

LADY ANSTRUTHER Well, there was this terrible noise. A sort of rattle, rattle, bang, bang. bang! And then the engine just seemed to lose its power.

ROBERT We'll get Tom to take a look at it.

LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh how kind but I think my , Weaver, seems to have it in hand. Could I just use your telephone and tell my hosts I won’t be able to get to them tonight?

EDITH But what will you do?

LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh we passed a public house in the village and I asked Weaver to see if they have any rooms.

ROBERT You can't possibly stay at the pub.

LADY ANSTRUTHER Why not? I'm tougher than I look.

CORA You must stay here. We have people coming for dinner so it'll be easy.

ROSE Oh yes it's perfect.

LADY ANSTRUTHER (O.S.) Oh that’s sweet. MOLESLEY arrives with a tray of tea.

ROBERT Molesley? You look very Latin all of a sudden. Do you have Italian blood?

MOLESLEY No, m'lord. Not that I'm aware.

ROBERT Or Spanish? Or Irish?

JIMMY enters with a tray of cakes.

CORA James ...

He looks over at her and sees LADY ANSTRUTHER sat next to CORA.

CORA (CONT) ... please tell Mrs Hughes that Lady Anstruther will be staying. If she could prepare Princess Amelia?

JIMMY tries to stay composed.

JIMMY Very good, your ladyship.

LADY ANSTRUTHER stares back, unblinking as JIMMY hurries out.

INT. HALL. DOWNTON. NIGHT.

LADY ANSTRUTHER is walking down stairs, looking sensational. She starts across the hall, then catches sight of JIMMY.

LADY ANSTRUTHER Jimmy? I ought to scold you. Why did you ignore my letters? You're a very naughty boy.

Just then CARSON enters the hall.

CARSON Show her ladyship where to find the drawing room, James.

JIMMY Of course. Will you come this way, m'lady?

As he opens the door, she sweeps past, just trailing her hand across his stomach. But CARSON has noticed nothing.

INT. DRAWING ROOM. DOWNTON. NIGHT.

A gathering of mainly young, including every family member. LADY ANSTRUTHER walks over to MARY with GILLINGHAM.

LADY ANSTRUTHER I feel so guilty pushing into a family .

GILLINGHAM You'd be an ornament at any gathering.

LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh how nice. Thank you. No cocktails? I thought everyone had them now.

MARY Not at Downton. Our tried them once and he hasn't recovered.

LADY ANSTRUTHER laughs loudly, she glances over at ROBERT and CORA talking to another GUEST.

LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh look at your . Thirty four years. I’d never manage it. That's the advantage of an older husband. One gets an early release.

CARSON Miss Sarah Bunting.

ROBERT looks over as SARAH enters.

ROBERT What on earth is she doing here?

ROSE I asked her. Cora said I could.

She and KITTY walk over to SARAH.

CORA Have I done something wrong?

ROBERT Miss Bunting is the teacher I told you about. After her behaviour while we were in I would not have thought her a suitable guest.

ROSE and KITTY join SARAH and BRANSON.

ROSE Let me introduce you. Kitty Colthurst. Sarah Bunting. Miss Bunting’s a teacher.

KITTY Oh golly how clever. What d'you teach?

SARAH The usual things. Writing. Mathematics.

KITTY Crikey. Writing's almost beyond me and I wouldn't know where to start with mathematics!

SARAH Well then you must marry someone rich enough to ensure you never need to.

An awkward silence, then KITTY and ROSE turn to talk to another GUEST.

BRANSON turns to SARAH.

BRANSON What are you doing here?

SARAH Lady Rose invited me.

BRANSON Rose? Did you ask Lord Grantham?

ROSE Wasn't Cora's permission enough?

She turns back to her guest, BRANSON looks uncomfortable.

ISOBEL and VIOLET enter the room.

MARY How are you?

VIOLET I’m exhausted. Two parties in one day is too much for me.

MARY Was your luncheon a success?

VIOLET You must ask Cousin Isobel.

She looks round the room, catching sight of SARAH.

VIOLET (CONT) We've cast the net wide tonight. MARY Can't Tom have a friend of his own?

VIOLET Oh of course. But it's time he decided whether he is fish, flesh, fowl or good red herring.

ISOBEL Well, I think it's nice to see an intelligent face here.

She walks over to SARAH.

FIRST YOUNG MAN Miss Bunting has been shocking us with her support for the Prime Minister.

SARAH But surely most of the country must support him or he wouldn't be Prime Minister.

FIRST YOUNG MAN There is an unanswerable logic in that.

ISOBEL Oh quite.

VIOLET is with ROBERT and EDITH.

VIOLET There is an alliance that does not bode well.

ROBERT I quite agree with you.

EDITH Aren't you being very snobbish?

VIOLET We are being realistic, something your generation has such trouble with.

All express their delight in her choice of and hat while discussing when her parents, the Flintshires, will be arriving for the wedding. Lady Rose requests they remain quiet about her parents’ troubled marriage as it could upset the Sinderby’s, her soon to be in-laws. Lady Rose talks about wanting to have had the wedding in a synagogue, but that none are to be found in Ripon. Mrs. Hughes talks with Mr. Carson about the Flintshire’s lack of servants and speculates that the Sinderbys are quite wealthy. Mr. Carson is concerned about having enough staff in London to handle the wedding in the right way, so Mrs. Hughes suggests he hire a footman for the week.

THOMAS hurries down the stairs, carrying the register. He gives orders to one of the FOOTMEN carrying a box.

THOMAS Take them straight to the wagonette.

He makes his way into CARSON’s room.

CARSON is getting ready for the day with MOLESLEY.

THOMAS hands CARSON the register.

THOMAS The inventory Mr Carson.

CARSON looks at it.

CARSON Thank you.

He then hurries out, makes his way down the hallway.

He makes his way into MRS HUGHES’ room, where he hands her another form.

THOMAS Mrs Hughes.

MRS HUGHES Oh, thank you Mr Barrow.

THOMAS exits.

INT. KITCHENS. DOWNTON. DAY.

MRS PATMORE is arranging sugar flowers for the amazing wedding cake, while DAISY sits helping and the rest of the hurry about their day around them.

DAISY How can we get it up to London?

MRS PATMORE Don't worry. We'll have plenty of time to make repairs.

MRS HUGHES walks over and takes a look.

MRS HUGHES I must say you're a real artist.

MRS PATMORE Well it's as much Daisy's work as mine. Now, how much should we take and what can we buy when we get there?

MRS HUGHES I'm happy to tell you that most things you can buy in Ripon are also available in London.

MRS PATMORE I know, but you don't trust them quite the same, do you?

MRS HUGHES Well, you don't. MRS HUGHES leaves the kitchen.

DAISY Why is she coming to London? Haven't they replaced Mrs Bute?

MRS PATMORE Oh no, no, they're not going to. There will be no permanent housekeeper at Grantham House in future. Another clang in the march of time.

INT. ROSE'S BEDROOM. DOWNTON. DAY.

The room is strewn with new clothes as ROSE models a going-away suit. ANNA is tidying and helping while MARY, CORA, VIOLET and ISOBEL sit around.

ROSE Ta dah.

ISOBEL Oh, that’s lovely.

ROSE You don't think it's a bit mumsy?

ALL No.

MARY It's very chic.

VIOLET Can we see it with the hat?

ANNA hands the hat to ROSE who puts it on.

Gasps of approval and applause.

ROSE talks to ANNA as she adjusts the hat.

ROSE Are you looking forward to London?

ANNA I am. Mr Bates and I need to inspect our house there, so the timing couldn't be better.

CORA I'm sorry Susan's missing all this.

ROSE She doesn't care about clothes.

MARY I still don't understand why they didn't come two months ago, when they originally said.

CORA How could they? The Government changed the date for the hand-over. They were stuck.

MARY I'd have come back anyway. If it were my daughter's wedding.

VIOLET Then I do not suggest a career in the Diplomatic.

CORA Will they be there before us?

ROSE No. They're spending the night in Southampton. So we'll all arrive in St James's on the same day.

MARY And are we to pretend they're a happy couple?

ROSE Yes, we jolly well are.

CORA Why cast a shadow?

ROSE I quite agree.

CORA I'm sorry it can’t be here.

MARY I don't think a Registry Office wedding and a Church blessing would be quite what the county expects and anyway, London makes more sense for Susan and Shrimpie.

ROSE And I want a blessing in a Synagogue and where would you find a Synagogue in Ripon?

ISOBEL I do admire the way you just take it all in your stride. ROSE I think it would make it easier for Lord Sinderby. If we can manage it.

ISOBEL Oh, I'm not sure Lord Sinderby deserves your concern.

ROSE Atticus loves him and I love Atticus.

VIOLET Love may not conquer all, but it can conquer quite a lot. They all giggle.

MRS HUGHES (V.O.) I worried about her...

INT. SERVANT’S CORRIDOR. MRS HUGHES'S SITTING ROOM. DOWNTON. DAY.

CARSON is talking to MRS HUGHES as they walk along the corridor towards MRS HUGHES’ sitting room.

MRS HUGHES (CONT) ... ladyship having to face the traitor, but it seems Miss O'Brien's got herself on by the new Governor's wife.

CARSON Typical. But I’ve been told they've neither nor , which seems odd for a Marquess and Marchioness.

MRS HUGHES To be quite honest, Mr Carson, I don't think they have two pennies to rub together. It's all gone.

CARSON So the Sinderby millions must be a cheering thought.

They enter MRS HUGHES’ sitting room.

MRS HUGHES I wonder. Lady Flintshire's not the most liberal being on the planet.

CARSON No.

MRS HUGHES Then again, Madge says Lord Sinderby’s none too keen. CARSON So I gather.

MRS HUGHES Hurrah for intolerance on both sides.

CARSON I'm worried about running it all with only Messrs Barrow and Molesley.

MRS HUGHES You think we'll look a bit dingy?

CARSON Don't you?

MRS HUGHES Could we borrow a spare footman?

CARSON I don't know. Borrowing footmen sounds like something out of the last century. Even to me.

MRS HUGHES Then hire a lad for the week we're there. It wouldn't cost much.

CARSON And that's to be it for the Big Parade?

MRS HUGHES The Big Parade's passed by, Mr Carson. We're just trying to keep up as best we can.

VIOLET No.

KURAGIN sits facing VIOLET.

KURAGIN So what do you say?

VIOLET You want an answer just like that?

KURAGIN I know my own feelings. You do too. VIOLET I can't make a decision now.

KURAGIN I won't change.

VIOLET Don't proclaim your intransigence, as if it were a virtue.

MRS HUGHES (CONT) ...Andy here will be an extra footman while we're in London. Please be helpful to him.

ANNA Starting at dinner tonight?

ANDY Yeah. That's the idea.

THOMAS How did Mr Carson find you?

ANDY I was working as a hall boy and Mr Carson rang my old butler to see if he had any ideas.

BAXTER But it's only a week's work. Will he take you back?

ANDY I don't want to go back. Not as a hall boy. I want to be a footman now and this is the first step. BAXTER I think that's brave.

THOMAS You've got to be brave these days. Do you know London well?

ANDY Not here. I grew up in the East End and I’ve only ever worked in Bayswater.

DENKER Bayswater?

ANDREW Yeah north of the park.

DENKER Oh yes, I know where it is. So you're not known round here then?

ANDREW No.

DENKER And you're just with us 'til after the wedding?

ANDY That's it.

DENKER I dare say you enjoy a bit of fun.

ANDY I s'pose so. As much as the next man.

DENKER Well, there's fun to be had round here if you know where to look for it.

THOMAS You know this area, then?

DENKER Oh, yes. I've come home. I spent many a year in St James's Square.

THOMAS Well, before we get drawn into Miss Denker's past adventures, why don't you come along with me and I'll show you how it all works. Chop, chop.

He walks out with ANDY following close behind. EXT. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. EVE.

The FLINTSHIRES are getting out of a taxi, to be greeted by ROBERT, CORA, and CARSON.

ROBERT Welcome the hunter, home from the hill. How are you both?

SUSAN Worn out. The train from Southampton was almost as bad as the voyage from Bombay.

CORA You must lie down before you change. Do you remember Carson?

CARSON I gather you haven’t brought any personal attendants, m’lord.

SHRIMPIE Those days are done for us, now, Carson.

SUSAN We needn’t tell the world.

She walks up the steps into the house, the others follow.

MRS HUGHES (V.O.) You will have Lady Mary's ...

INT. HALL. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. EVE.

MRS HUGHES has joined them.

MRS HUGHES (CONT) ... maid Anna, to help you, m'lady. His lordship will have Mr Molesley. Now I'll show you to your room.

SUSAN We're not in one room? Together?

CORA The thing is, we're very squashed -

SUSAN I'm not sharing a room. I'll go to an hotel.

SHRIMPIE Come on - MRS HUGHES Don’t worry m’lady, we'll manage. If you'd like to come this way,

SUSAN stalks towards the staircase, with SHRIMPIE following. He rolls his eyes at ROBERT.

MRS HUGHES talks quietly to CORA.

CORA Thank you, Mrs Hughes.

MRS HUGHES goes.

ROSE (CONT) They said you'd arrived.

SUSAN Yes. What a journey. I seem to have been travelling for as long as I can remember.

ROSE Well, you're here now.

SUSAN Won't you give your poor old mother a kiss?

ROSE Of course.

They kiss on the cheek, then SUSAN regards ROSE.

SUSAN This is quite a choice you've made. ROSE I hope you'll like him. They're all coming for dinner tonight.

SUSAN checks ROSE’s engagement ring.

SUSAN And you're quite, quite sure?

ROSE Absolutely.

SUSAN Well then that's all I needed to hear.

INT. KITCHEN PASSAGE. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON

ANNA sees MRS HUGHES and approaches her.

ANNA Has Mr Carson announced dinner?

MRS HUGHES They're not all here yet.

ANNA I found a letter from Mr Vyner when we arrived. Confirming I'm to be at Scotland Yard in the morning.

MRS HUGHES Try not to worry about it. Why not go to see your house afterwards? You'd enjoy that.

ANNA smiles and MRS HUGHES heads off.

INT. KITCHEN. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. EVE.

THOMAS joins ANDY over at the table.

THOMAS Now in London, we supervise but they help themselves to coffee and drinks from a side table. Once they settle, we leave them to it.

THOMAS adjusts ANDY’s tie.

ANDY In my last place, the footmen stayed 'til they went to bed.

THOMAS Not here. If they want a second drink, it's up to them.

He admires his handy work with the tie.

THOMAS (CONT) There we are.

INT. DRAWING ROOM. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON.

SUSAN comes in with CORA.

CORA I hope Anna was helpful.

SUSAN She will be, I'm sure.

EDITH Where are the Sinderbys?

The door opens and THOMAS shows in VIOLET.

EDITH (CONT) Oh?!

MARY We thought you might be Lord and Lady Sinderby.

VIOLET 'Fraid not.

EDITH walks over and gives VIOLET a kiss on the cheek.

EDITH Hello.

SHRIMPIE What are they like?

MARY She's very nice and fond of Rose.

BRANSON He’s less convinced.

MARY Rose is more than a match for him.

SUSAN It does make me smile that they should be the ones objecting.

SHRIMPIE They have as much right as we do. ROSE Mummy, Daddy, can you try to behave like a happy couple?

SUSAN Wouldn't that be rather dishonest?

ROSE Why? You haven't separated yet.

SUSAN We separated the moment we walked down the gangway at Southampton.

SHRIMPIE It won't kill us to put on a show for a few more days.

ROSE The thing is, I don't want to give Lord Sinderby any ammunition -

VIOLET So Lady Rose MacClare is a mésalliance.

EDITH I'm not sure that's helpful, Granny.

THOMAS opens the door.

THOMAS Lord and Lady Sinderby and Mr Atticus Aldridge.

CORA Do come in. How lovely to see you.

ROSE takes ATTICUS by the hand and brings him over to her parents.

ROSE Daddy, Mummy. This is Atticus.

SUSAN smiles at him and shakes his hand.

ATTICUS How do you do?

SUSAN What a peculiar name.

She walks off.

ATTICUS looks crestfallen. ROSE smiles at him and leads him over to the others. INT. HOUSEKEEPER'S ROOM. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. NIGHT.

MRS HUGHES approaches CARSON.

MRS HUGHES How's it going?

CARSON Lady Flintshire is not a push-over.

MRS HUGHES I told you that.

CARSON I must ask, because I can't get it out of my mind, why has the Inspector summoned Mrs Bates?

MRS HUGHES Would it help if I swore neither of them has done anything wrong?

CARSON I never doubted it but it's a relief to hear. I'd better go up.

He goes.

INT. . GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. NIGHT.

Everyone is sat around the table.

THOMAS pours the pudding wine.

ROBERT What made you choose Yorkshire? Was it a historic reason?

LADY SINDERBY Not really. I used to go there as a girl and of course it's beautiful.

SUSAN Do you have any English blood?

SHRIMPIE looks embarrassed.

SINDERBY It's true we only date from the eighteen fifties but Lady Sinderby's family arrived in the reign of King Richard the Third. SUSAN Really? I always think of you as Nomads, drifting around the world.

VIOLET Talking of drifting round, is it true you're starting your honeymoon at the Melfords? In Coningsby?

ATTICUS Oh yes. Lady Melford is Mother's cousin.

SUSAN Is she? I never knew that.

SINDERBY I gather you wanted a Synagogue blessing?

ROSE I'd like to respect both sides.

SINDERBY Well, you don't understand our customs. Then again why should you?

ROSE So it won't be possible?

SINDERBY No. He should have told you.

LADY SINDERBY I thought we could have a dinner on Wednesday night for all of you. So you could meet some of the relations.

MARY And show them how lucky they are.

Giggles around the table.

CORA Have you got many of them staying?

LADY SINDERBY We're crammed to the gunwales. Atticus has had to move into the Halnaby Hotel.

MARY I love the Halnaby.

LADY SINDERBY It makes sense and he can have his - what do they call it now - his stag party there, without disturbing us.

EDITH Will you be going, Lord Sinderby?

ATTICUS Hardly. Stag parties are rather high on Father's disapproval list.

VIOLET Is it a long list, Lord Sinderby? The things you disapprove of?

SINDERBY No. As long as I can steer clear of card sharps and undercooked fish and divorce, I think I'm fairly easy.

ROBERT looks awkward.

ISOBEL Is divorce so very terrible these days? Is it worse to stay together and be miserable?

SINDERBY Well I am clearly old-fashioned, but to me, divorce signifies weakness...

SHRIMPIE looks uncomfortable.

SINDERBY (CONT) ... degradation, scandal and failure.

ROBERT turns to SUSAN.

ROBERT Are you glad to be in London again?

SUSAN I will be, when I get the house back.

ROBERT When do the tenants go?

SUSAN Next week in theory. I need to pull the real pictures out of storage -

BRANSON What a palaver. SUSAN I know, but think of the relief when I can shut the door at last and be alone in my own home.

VIOLET looks uncomfortable.

SINDERBY Won't Lord Flintshire be in there with you?

ROSE Of course he will.

SHRIMPIE Of course I will. What a funny thing to say, Susan.

VIOLET Funny is one word for it.

LADY SINDERBY Well, I want you to know that you'll always be welcome at Canningford.

SUSAN How kind. Tell me, do you find it difficult these days, to get staff?

LADY SINDERBY Not very. But then we're Jewish, so we pay well.

Everyone looks at each other awkwardly, that is apart from SUSAN who doesn’t get the sarcasm.

INT. STAIRCASE HALL. GRANTHAM HOUSE. LONDON. NIGHT.

ISOBEL and VIOLET are climbing the stairs.

VIOLET You know if I don’t get an early night I'd never make it through the week. Is Dicky Merton coming to the wedding?

ISOBEL I don't think so.

VIOLET Oh, oh I'm sorry.

ISOBEL You've changed your tune.

VIOLET Well I’ve been reminded recently that one is not given many chances in life and if you miss them, they may not necessarily be repeated.

She walks off to her room.

ISOBEL looks sad.

ROSE turns to TOM.

ROSE Lucky you Tom.

SINDERBY Mary, go with Mr Talbot. Rachel ... Oh, sort it out between you.

LADY SINDERBY I’ll see you all there.

They start to walk towards the butts. EDITH is near the back.

EDITH I'm not quite sure where I'm supposed to go.

ROSE Oh he's such a controller. Go where you’d like. Mr Rogers?

CHARLIE ROGERS Would it be awful if I were left alone with my loader?

EDITH Of course not.

BERTIE turns to EDITH.

BERTIE Well I wouldn't mind, if you've nothing better to do. I'm Bertie Pelham. The agent.

EDITH Are you often asked to come when they’re shooting?

BERTIE No, I am not. And I'm staying for dinner, which they really didn't have to do. It's very kind.

EXT. GROUSE MOOR. BRANCASTER CASTLE. DAY.

MARY is at the butt with HENRY TALBOT.

HENRY Thanks for keeping my spirits up.

MARY Some men hate having strangers with them. My father does.

HENRY Oh, I don't mind. Especially not you.

MARY You're staying with Mr Rogers, aren't you?

HENRY That's right. Lord Sinderby said he could bring me. Very decent of him.

MARY Do you shoot a lot?

HENRY Not at this level.

MARY That explains it.

HENRY What explains what?

MARY Nothing.

HENRY No, go on. I insist.

MARY Well it's none of my business. But Atticus isn't shooting today to make room for you.

HENRY Atticus? Lord Sinderby's son? That's terrible. Why didn't someone tell Charlie there was no room?

MARY They thought it inhospitable.

HENRY As soon as this drive’s over, I'll swap places.

MARY No, don't. His guns are back at the castle, it's all settled now. Look forget I said anything.

HENRY Is your husband one of the other guns?

MARY No. Although my late husband was quite good at it. In .

HENRY You're a young widow. But then I suppose the war gave us many young widows. MARY It wasn't the war, in fact ... Look out. Here they come.

He lifts his gun and fires.

MARY (CONT) Well done.

HENRY Fluke.

MARY watches as he fires.

Season 5, Episode 9

In the library at Brancaster Castle in the evening, Lady Edith plays a tune on a gramophone. The butler, Stowell, shows deference to Branson by asking if he needs anything. Rose dances with new husband, Atticus, and Lady Mary dances with Henry Talbot. Henry starts asking questions about an incident that took place earlier in the day when a young woman and her child arrived at the castle unexpectedly. Mary congratulates him on his curiosity, but doesn’t answer his questions. Edith and Branson dance together. He talks about these being his final days at Downton and asks Edith to be honest with him about Marigold being her child. Edith asks Branson to keep it to himself and a secret from Mary. ROSE dances with ATTICUS and MARY dances with HENRY. MARY glares over at STOWELL who turns to see BRANSON stood nearby, drinking.

STOWELL approaches BRANSON.

STOWELL Is there anything I can get you, sir? Anything you'd like?

BRANSON No, no thank you, Stowell. You've been very considerate.

STOWELL bows and exits.

MARY whispers to HENRY.

MARY That makes it all worth it.

HENRY Makes what worth it?

MARY It would take too long to explain. Suffice to say the butler is back in his box.

HENRY Well that sounds rather snobbish.

MARY Not in this instance.

HENRY What was really going on this afternoon with that woman? The one with the little boy in tow?

MARY What makes you think there was anything "going on"?

HENRY Alright. Why was Lord Sinderby in a panic? Why did Lady Rose take over? Why did your father pretend to know the visitor when he clearly did not? And why was Lady Sinderby in total ignorance throughout?

MARY Naturally, I am not going to answer any of your questions, but I am impressed you should ask them. Well done.

BRANSON is dancing with EDITH. BRANSON Are you looking forward to going home?

EDITH Why, particularly?

BRANSON Aren't you missing Marigold?

EDITH Aren't you missing Sybbie? Isn't Mary missing George?

BRANSON Not quite as much.

EDITH What are you trying to say?

BRANSON Not a lot really, but these will be my last months at Downton and you have always been my ally. I'd like to feel we were honest with each other. You see, where I grew up, there were quite a few Marigolds.

EDITH I'm not sure I understand you.

BRANSON I think you do. My cousin Nula had a child that was brought up as her sister. No one talked of it, naturally. But we all knew.

EDITH I told Papa you'd guessed.

BRANSON So they're both in on it.

EDITH They are now.

BRANSON And Mary? Does she know?

EDITH No, she's completely uninterested in me, which should keep me safe. Please keep it to yourself. Not for my sake, so much as for hers.

BRANSON You may not believe it but I'm a signed up member of this

A new tune starts and BERTIE walks over.

BERTIE

Can I have this one?

EDITH Of course.

She moves into his arms and they start to dance.

BERTIE You look very intense.

EDITH Oh, we were just talking about our ward. adopted a little girl. She's growing up at Downton. What's the new Lord Hexham like? He must be your cousin.

BERTIE My third cousin. Does that count?

EDITH Is he nice?

BERTIE Oh Peter’s all right. He's not here much. He always seems to be in North Africa. Do you always ask so many questions?

She smiles and they dance on.

MARY I haven't had it yet.

HENRY We wanted to make an early start. Charlie's got something on this afternoon.

MARY Well, goodbye, Mr Talbot.

CHARLIE walks over to the car with one of the FOOTMEN and they start loading more luggage on board.

MARY (CONT) I feel guilty now. Trying to make you feel uncomfortable yesterday.

HENRY But you were quite right. I'll be less cavalier next time.

MARY Maybe we'll meet again. Are you ever in Yorkshire?

HENRY I have an aunt up there, so you never know.

MARY Perhaps we'll meet shooting.

HENRY Maybe, but it's not my real sport.

MARY What is?

HENRY Cars.

MARY Cars?

ROGERS Henry! We must go!

MARY takes in the car for the first time.

MARY Heavens, what a snappy chariot. Mr Rogers clearly has hidden depths.

CLIP 10

Season 5, Episode 9

It’s at Downton Abbey, and Mrs. Hughes brings some punch to Mr. Carson’s room to celebrate. He reveals that he’s purchased the house that they both had an interest in and bought it in both their names. Mrs. Hughes begins to object that he will be stuck with her. Carson then tells her he wants to be “stuck” with her for the rest of her life. It’s a proposal and Mrs. Hughes hesitates because she is stunned. Carson says take your time, but Mrs. Hughes happily accepts saying, “I thought you’d never ask.”

Cast:

Carson (Jim Carter)

Mrs Hughes (Phyllis Logan)

CARSON leads MRS HUGHES into his room.

INT. KITCHENS/SERVANTS’ PASSAGEWAY. DOWNTON. NIGHT.

MRS HUGHES offers him one of the two glasses of punch she is carrying. CARSON closes the door.

CARSON I don't think I should.

MRS HUGHES Go on. It's Christmas. Let's toast your new house.

CARSON Maybe I should mention one thing. You say "your new house" but it isn't only mine.

MRS HUGHES No?

CARSON No. I have registered it in both of our names. I hope you don't mind, but I hate to change a plan when there's no need.

MRS HUGHES Mr Carson, I'm very appreciative. Really. But I can't accept.

CARSON Why not?

MRS HUGHES Who knows what the future may hold or how much longer we'll even be here? Suppose you want to move away and change your life entirely, you don't want to be stuck with me.

CARSON But that's the point.

MRS HUGHES What is?

CARSON I do want to be stuck with you.

She stares at him as the penny drops.

MRS HUGHES I'm not convinced I can be hearing this right.

CARSON You are if you think I'm asking you to marry me.

MRS HUGHES looks aghast.

CARSON (CONT) Well? MRS HUGHES Well, you could knock me down with a feather.

CARSON But you're not offended?

MRS HUGHES Mr Carson, I can assure you the very last thing in the world that I am at this moment, is offended.

CARSON You can take as long as you like. I won’t press you. Because one thing I do know: I'm not marrying anyone else.

MRS HUGHES hands him a glass of punch.

MRS HUGHES Well then ...

CARSON What exactly are we celebrating?

MRS HUGHES We're celebrating the fact that I can still get a proposal at my age.

CARSON And that's it?

She steps forward.

MRS HUGHES Of course I'll marry you, you old booby. I thought you'd never ask.

CARSON looks close to tears.

She takes him by the arm as he looks down at her.
