BATES is talking to ANNA. BATES I hope you're right about Lord Gillingham. What would I have felt if I'd inherited a family with you? ANNA You'd have loved them, I hope. BATES I would but I can't deny I'd prefer one of my own. ANNA says nothing. BATES (CONT) You'd feel the same. ANNA Well, they do say a mother's love is the strongest love there is. BAXTER looks up and sees THOMAS enter. ANNA (CONT) But that's all in God's hands. There's nothing we can do. BATES I can think of one thing. ANNA Mr Bates, that sort of talk is beneath you. VIOLET Tell me, how well do you know Lord Merton? LADY SHACKLETON Oh, you know. We've seen each other at parties for forty years. VIOLET I worry that he's finding things difficult since his wife died. You're a widow. You know what he's going through. LADY SHACKLETON I suppose so but I never saw them as very devoted. I should've thought he was glad to be rid of her. I would be. VIOLET Then his sons are Quite difficult. LADY SHACKLETON I know what that's like. VIOLET Could you come to luncheon on Saturday? Help me cheer him up? LADY SHACKLETON Well I’d love to. VIOLET Oh! LADY SHACKLETON Of course a single peer with a good estate won't be lonely long if he doesn't want to be. BAXTER He thinks I know something about Mr Bates. MOLESLEY And do you? BAXTER Maybe. Mr Bates may have done something he wouldn't want known. MOLESLEY "Something"? What do you mean a crime or...? BAXTER I'm not sure. I know he took a journey which I think he'd deny. MOLESLEY Look, I don't want to know anymore, but a pound to a penny, Mr Barrow thinks he can use it against Mr Bates. BAXTER says nothing. MOLESLEY (CONT) Report him to her ladyship. She'd soon put a stop to it. BAXTER I can't. It's complicated but I can't. MOLESLEY looks down and turns his head left to right. BAXTER (CONT) What is it? MOLESLEY What’s what? BAXTER You're doing something funny with your head. Sort of ... tilting it. MOLESLEY I'm not, am I? How do you think I look? BAXTER Why? Have you got a rash? MOLESLEY I’ve not got a rash. BAXTER That's all right, then. MOLESLEY No, what I meant was ... How old would you say I am? BAXTER I don't know. Maybe ... fifty two? MOLESLEY Oh. BAXTER Why? How old are you? MOLESLEY Fifty one. CLIP 2 Season 5, Episode 1 Lady Anstruther, Jimmy’s former employer, comes to Downton to visit Lord and Lady Grantham. HALL. DOWNTON. DAY. LADY ANSTRUTHER enters with ROBERT. THOMAS walks in behind them. LADY ANSTRUTHER It's a nightmare when guests are a nuisance and I feel so guilty, but I honestly wasn't sure we were even going to make it down the drive. They join CORA, EDITH, and ROSE. ROSE But what happened exactly? LADY ANSTRUTHER Well, there was this terrible noise. A sort of rattle, rattle, bang, bang. bang! And then the engine just seemed to lose its power. ROBERT We'll get Tom to take a look at it. LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh how kind but I think my chauffeur, Weaver, seems to have it in hand. Could I just use your telephone and tell my hosts I won’t be able to get to them tonight? EDITH But what will you do? LADY ANSTRUTHER Oh we passed a public house in the village and I asked Weaver to see if they have any rooms. ROBERT You can't possibly stay at the pub. LADY ANSTRUTHER Why not? I'm tougher than I look. CORA You must stay here. We have people coming for dinner so it'll be easy. ROSE Oh yes it's perfect. LADY ANSTRUTHER (O.S.) Oh that’s sweet. MOLESLEY arrives with a tray of tea. ROBERT Molesley? You look very Latin all of a sudden. Do you have Italian blood? MOLESLEY No, m'lord. Not that I'm aware. ROBERT Or Spanish? Or Irish? JIMMY enters with a tray of cakes. CORA James ... He looks over at her and sees LADY ANSTRUTHER sat next to CORA. CORA (CONT) ... please tell Mrs Hughes that Lady Anstruther will be staying. If she could prepare Princess Amelia? JIMMY tries to stay composed. JIMMY Very good, your ladyship. LADY ANSTRUTHER stares back, unblinking as JIMMY hurries out. • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

Scene on Radio The Second Revolution (Season 4, Episode 4): Transcript http://www.sceneonradio.org/s4-e4-the-second-revolution/ John Biewen: A content warning: This episode includes descriptions of intense violence. John Biewen: In 1829, the black American writer David Walker published his book, An Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World. David Walker [voiceover]: The whites have always been an unjust, jealous, unmerciful, avaricious and blood-thirsty set of beings, always seeking after power and authority…. John Biewen: Walker’s Appeal was one of the most radical abolitionist statements in antebellum America. He condemned the people who called themselves white for their cruel commitment to enslaving black people, and he called on enslaved people to revolt against their masters. Walker also suggested white people deserved punishment from on high. David Walker: I declare, it does appear to me, as though some nations think God is asleep, or that he made the Africans for nothing else but to dig their mines 1 and work their farms, or they cannot believe history, sacred or profane. I ask every man who has a heart, and is blessed with the privilege of believing—Is not God a God of justice to all his creatures? [Music] John Biewen: Other leading abolitionists of the 19th century, including Frederick Douglass and John Brown, voiced some version of this idea: that slavery violated God’s law, or natural law, and white Americans would someday pay for this great sin. It took the cataclysm of the Civil War to bring a white American president to a similar view.

  • Domestic Servants Personal Lives
Explore More Domestic Servants Personal Lives In their leisure time, domestic servants likely enjoyed the same hobbies and pleasures as people in other jobs during this era. Sewing, reading, playing musical instruments, chatting over tea, or having evening gatherings in their employer’s kitchen or servants’ hall were common diversions, and may have occurred here at Lucknow. A space like the servants' hall, set aside solely for the enjoyment and rest of the servants, would have been a luxury that existed in only the wealthiest homes. Though the servants’ hall was a spot to rest and have a meal, note that the intercom, telephone, and home alarm system were in this space so a servant’s break might be frequently interrupted. For many servants in the early 20th century, Sunday would have been a typical day off to attend church, a local festival, or perhaps go to the movies. Unfortunately, domestic service workers battled the social stigma attached to their job titles, a problem which had persisted for centuries. Service was considered by some to be a disgraceful and dishonorable profession. For the most part, its workers endured a low social status in American society. A group of domestic servants, probably early 1920s. MORE ON OTHER SIDE Explore More Domestic Servants Personal Lives We don’t know for sure what it was like to live and work at Lucknow as a domestic servant, but first person accounts from people in domestic service during this era, as well as historic documents and photographs, help illustrate the experience. By the twentieth century, domestic servants had more personal freedom than they had in previous eras.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION A Soldier at Heart: The Life of Smedley Butler, 1881 - 1940 by Eric Dennis Myers Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Joan Waugh, Chair The dissertation is a historical biography of Smedley Darlington Butler (1881-1940), a decorated soldier and critic of war profiteering during the 1930s. A two-time Congressional Medal of Honor winner and son of a powerful congressman, Butler was one of the most prominent military figures of his era. He witnessed firsthand the American expansionism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, participating in all of the major conflicts and most of the minor ones. Following his retirement in 1931, Butler became an outspoken critic of American intervention, arguing in speeches and writings against war profiteering and the injustices of expansionism. His critiques represented a wide swath of public opinion at the time – the majority of Americans supported anti-interventionist policies through 1939. Yet unlike other members of the movement, Butler based his theories not on abstract principles, but on experiences culled from decades of soldiering: the terrors and wasted resources of the battlefield, ! ""! ! the use of the American military to bolster corrupt foreign governments, and the influence of powerful, domestic moneyed interests.
