Remember When Russian Bikers Celebrated Christmas in the Surf in 2010 Don’t rent your bikes to Moscow men

The beach was fairly busy on Christmas Day with lots of Winter Texans enjoying the sunshine, collecting seashells and flying kites. We were a bit surprised, however, to see a couple of bikers checking out the surf up close—really close. It was already a bit cold for motorcycling, but it was especially chilly for riding a Last sunset of 2018 by Jon Brandt motorcycle in the water! As long time motorcyclists and “benefactors-of-trusty-motorized-machinery” in general, we watched in bewilderment as these two chaps repeatedly entered the Gulf to depths well above the hubs of their bikes. They were laughing like children and snapping photos of one another as they’d rev up another substantial spray of our extremely salty coastal bend seawater. A little inquisitive conversation revealed they were both from Russia and spoke very little English. The words “saline”, “corrosion”, and “rust” elicited no spark of understanding whatsoever. They did manage to communicate to us they’d rented the bikes somewhere in the United States and seemed quite thrilled to be someplace warm enough to cruise the beach on Christmas Day. We’re pretty sure the owners of the Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and Honda GoldWing are going to be none-too-pleased in the years to come; we Islanders all know a good soaking in saltwater is the gift that keeps on giving for most non-stainless metals. Padre Island Drive Scoopy’s (361) 949-7810 Corpus Christi, TX 78418 January 3, 2019 Island Moon A 18 Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] 2019 a space odyssey… Welcome to the other side. WOW. Just saying 2019 seems like a space odyssey. I was born when Dwight Eisenhower was president in the 50’s and just saying 2019 seems like George Orwell when he was a kid. We’ve had a couple of hard years and I sure hope this year gives us a little break. I know you do too.. My thought here is, and I just had a long conversation with my buddy Hank Reeves, that The Mike Williams Jazz Band with Bill we can all finally get off the Harvey train. I’m Averach will play this Sunday brunch at ready. I bet you are too. I think it’s time. My Giggity’s. Ulrich Ellison will play Giggity’s on the good friend Jayme Jeffries wrote an end of the He used to play it with Rocky Arnold when 5th. year wrap up about 2018 that I’d like to share. he was alive. This year he’ll have the great dying breed of torch singers. Also on the 5th, the It’s time to move on folks. Giddy up. trumpeter Bill Averach leading the band with great Ulrich Ellison will be back in town. He’s Be happy… Denny Larkin on bass, Paul Taylor on keys, about as good as it gets. And it’s Ray Ray’s Scott Harrington on bone, BJ Shuler and Art birthday on the 11th and Selfie will explode at Once upon this year post Hurricane Harvey. Maza on drums and of couse Mike Williams on Shorty’s. I’m done . I love you all. What do we even say? Here’s my first thought: vocals and trombone. Go throw some money in Everyone needs to first on day one of 2019 his tip jar. He’s truly an island treasure and a ♫♪♫ And, that’s the truth ♫♪♫ receive and give each other a massive hug and pat on the back for making it through this crazy year! I know I have been writing a lot lately in Billy Snipes played the Gaff’s annual sentiment but it’s been for a reason….. People Black Eye Peo Off on New Years Day. need people. This year has been grueling. It has been trying to say the least… shall we say frankly- It has been HELL…..If ever there was a time that so many people were faced with more than they could handle, 2018 brought it! In this place we love, as much as we love it, after the storm, we should all be actively involved in this dialogue: How do we make a better plan? How can we better serve the community? How can we grow? When you are forced to rebuild amidst chaos, it is phenomenally difficult. And try to do it where there has been a largely reactive approach to life in general and on all levels….. you adapt. The fact of the matter is thru the years no matter the hardship, because there will always be one, we continue to learn that what we love about this “place” is actually our PEOPLE.. After the storm, we were very well taken care of in truth. Big shout out to Chef Billy Joe Willson, Camp David. The point: Being grateful is the key moving into the 2019. For the first time in a long time, we are Heidi and Patty at the Gaff’s annual Black Eye Pea Off on New Years Day. remembering in a “feels” way, why we truly love and are drawn to this place…. And we can thank “our” Hurricane this year for this: Harvey may well have pulled us back together, Joe King Carrasco ripped the roof at the as to reality and what is important. We were place at Giggity’s on New Year’s Eve. forced to throw things away we may have Live Music held for years but did not truly need. We were and his nephew Tucker was my roommate in forced to get raw. We were uncomfortable for a San Antonio. I was introduced to him by Doug Sunday, January 13 moment. That we all made it through a storm of Antone & the All Stars @ Sahm who insisted that I start booking him, Giggity’s massive proportions without massive casualty which I did. Joe could play anywhere he wants Tonight was unbelievable so if you feel you have just on NYE but he likes us. We are fortunate. Look Monday, January 14 a touch of PTSD after all that, you’re not crazy, at the big smile on his face here. We had us a Thursday, January 3 Free Beer Band @ Open Jam w/ Ray Summy it’s a very normal miraculous thing…. The time. I guarantee he’ll be back to bring us in to Giggity’s @ Giggity’s beauty of it can be this: Let us serve each other 2020. On New Year’s Day, the Gaff had their Ruben Limas @ Island well & better. Let us grab onto each other in the annual Black Eye Pea Off with our island rasta Italian Tuesday, January 15 next year and be productive, not destructive. Let cowboy, Billy Snipes on stage.
