Collections Inventory & Cataloging Internship at Forbes House Museum

The Forbes House Museum, Milton, MA, seeks an energetic intern to inventory and catalog the museum’s permanent collection, which includes 19th century Chinese export decorative arts, Civil War and President Lincoln memorabilia, and artifacts. The Intern will be responsible for uploading data, photos and documents to the museum’s cataloging database, Past Perfect. The Intern must have strong computer skills and be proficient in digital photography and photo editing. She/He must have excellent writing, research and data entry skills.

The Collections Inventory & Cataloging Internship is a paid hourly position requiring a commitment of 32-35 hours per week for 8 weeks. The applicant must be available for work during regular business hours from Tuesday- Friday. On occasion, she/he may be asked to participate in evening or weekend programs. The intern must have good communication and interpersonal skills and be willing to work collaboratively with a small staff, volunteers and the public. Organizational skills and attention to detail are a must.

The museum offers a creative environment with opportunity for hands-on learning. Interns make meaningful contributions toward the goals of the FHM organization, and have opportunity to participate in day-to-day operations in a small non-profit setting.

Applicants should be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in library & information science, communications, museum studies, non-profit management, history, public history, or other related field.

About the Forbes House Museum

The Forbes House Museum, built in 1833, is a historic Greek revival mansion, built for Margaret Perkins Forbes (1773– 1856) by her sons, Captain Robert Bennet Forbes (1804– 1889), and (1813– 1898). Captain Forbes was an American China trade merchant, designer, writer and philanthropist of international stature. Throughout the 19th century, the Captain and his family were leaders in U. S. trade in Canton, establishing the -based Russell & Company. The Museum collection includes Chinese export porcelain and silver, and American, European and Chinese paintings and furniture. Mary Bowditch Forbes (1878– 1962), granddaughter of the Captain, collected President Lincoln memorabilia, and built a replica of Lincoln’s log cabin on the grounds of the estate.

The Forbes House Museum is located on Milton Hill, overlooking the Boston city skyline, Neponset River Marshes and Boston Harbor. Tours of the Museum are available by reservation on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm.
