Entertaining Beliefs in Economic Mobility
Entertaining Beliefs in Economic Mobility Eunji Kim† Abstract Americans have long believed in upward mobility and the narrative of the American Dream. Even in the face of rising income inequality and substantial empirical evidence that eco- nomic mobility has declined in recent decades, many Americans remain convinced of the prospects for upward mobility. What explains this disconnect? I argue that Americans’ media diets play an important role in explaining this puzzle. Specifically, contemporary Americans are watching a record number of entertainment TV programs that emphasize “rags-to-riches” narratives. I demonstrate that such shows have become a ubiquitous part of the media landscape over the last two decades. National surveys as well as online and lab- in-the-field experiments show that exposure to these programs increases viewers’ beliefs in the American Dream and promotes internal attributions of wealth. Media exemplars present in what Americans are watching instead of news can powerfully distort economic perceptions and have important implications for public preferences for redistribution. But in a sea of brands, what makes one brand stand out and another fade into the background? How can brands transcend from lukewarm to loved? Is the power of influencers increasing or decreasing? Are all influencers created equal? And perhaps most importantly, how can marketers appeal to Gen Z versus Millennials? We designed this special research report to tackle all of these questions and more, because the truth is it’s tough to be a brand right now — there are landmines lurking everywhere, whether it’s political issues, personalities, or simply the rapid pace at which culture and consumer tastes are evolving. Trendera In this report, you’ll discover the latest macro and micro trends shaping brands and marketing as well as insights from our recent survey of over 600 Gen Z and Millennial consumers. -

Keszeg Anna: a Divat Nyugati Kánona a Next in Fashion Valóságshowban
A divat nyugati kánona a Next in Fashion valóságshowban Next in Fashion, 1. évad, 2020., Netfl ix KESZEG ANNA PhD, Babeș–Bolyai Tudományegyetem, Kolozsvár/ Babeș-Bolyai Uni- versity, Cluj E-mail: [email protected] Abstract (The Western Canon of Fashion in the Next in Fashion Reality Show) The article presents a critical and narratological analysis of a fashion design reality show produced by Netfl ix, Next in Fashion, available since January 2020 through the company’s streaming platform. The main goal of the analysis is to investigate the statement according to which streaming platforms contribute to the internationalization and globalization of content, a parallel phenomenon with the interest in local productions. In the case of the analyzed show, despite the diversifi ed geopolitical origins of the competitors, the designed garments are evaluated according to a western concept of fashion. The interest of the article resides in underlining the discontinuities between the competition series format and the represented socio-professional realities. Keywords fashion system; reality show; stereotyping; visibility; digital television Rezumat (Canonul occidental al modei in reality show-ul Next in Fashion) Articolul prezintă o analiză critică și naratologică a unui reality show de creaţie vestimentară produs de Netfl ix, Next in Fashion, difuzat începând din ianuarie 2020 prin platforma de streaming a companiei. -
