The municipality of Farsund has ca. 9.200 inhabitants, mainly concentrated on three centres of population - Farsund town, Vanse and Vestbygda. It also includes the outlying districts of Lista, Herad and Spind. Shipping, fishing and agriculture have been the main industries in the area. Today Farsund is the largest agrcultural district in the county of Vest-Agder, having 26 km2 productive land, 88 km2 forest and 17 k m2 freshwater areas. Farsund was already recognized as a trading centre in 1795, and in 1995 celebrated its 200-years jubilee with town status. Vanse: was formerly the largest centre of population in the district. Today it has 2.500 inhabitants, and some of the council offices are still situated there. Vestbygda: is built round the only harbour of any size in a particularly exposed stretch of the coast. There was a considerable emigration to the United States from this region in former times. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract : More than 1100 complete or fragmentary imported vessels in bronze, glass, wood, horn, clay and silver from the first millennium A.D. have been found in Norway, approximately 80% of them in graves. The extensive research already carried out has produced a vast body of literature, which generally keeps within strict chronological boundaries, concentrating on vessels from either the Roman Period, the Migration Period, or the Viking Age. Two main approaches to the material have traditionally been applied: 1) typo logical studies, on the basis of which trade connections and systems have been discussed from different theoretical perspectives, and 2) imports as status markers, from which hierarchical social systems of a general kind have been inferred. Only very rarely have their function as vessels attracted any serious consideration, and even more rarely their actual local context. -

Regin is working with hammer and tongs, while a helper operates the bellows . the landscape It is a commonplace of tourist brochures to state that a given region has ’everything’. But when it comes Agder, Norway’s southernmost region, it is almost true. Even if the two Agder counties are rather small com- pared to other Norwegian regions, the nature is remarkably varied and so are the ways of life. Just recently I woke up at the Penne farm to a Eidsfjorden with Listeid and Briseid, Farsund. Elle farm in the foreground to the working-day on Lista. It was May, and the sun was shining.
