BILL M. REESE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL District 6000 Past District Governor 1994-95 214 S. Village Dr. West Des Moines, Iowa 50265 515-225-6741 March 2012 Rev. Conley J. Biddle, as Secretary-Historian and Past President of the West Des Moines Rotary Club, wrote a history book to commemorate the Club’s 50th Anniversary (April 1, 1926 to April 1, 1976). This book was distributed at the anniversary party to all members and guests. Five years later, 1981—the year I was Club President, Conley wrote, and the club published, a second edition which included a considerable amount of additional information. This second edition was also distributed to all members at the time of publication. Now, 31 years later, our membership has almost entirely changed. Only a few current members remember receiving this book, and can still find it on their bookshelves. Conley was well-respected for his knowledge of Rotary, and he was elected District Governor for 1978-79. (I was his District Treasurer). Our club often called him “Mr. Rotary”. The book contains a wealth of Rotary background and information about early days of our club. I may have been especially attracted to it because I knew and worked with the individuals and programs mentioned therein from 1971 on to its date of publication. This has to be the starting point for any future historic record of our club. In today’s world, a new printing is not a practical approach. For ease of distribution, and long-term availability, computerization has to be the answer. I’m not an expert, but with a limited knowledge of Optical Character Recognition, I was able to scan this book into a word processing computer program.

The traditional statistics which are recorded tell us only about the contribution of individual players (eg. points scored, rebounds, etc). However, there are subtle aspects of play such as defensive help, setting screens and verbal communication that are known to be important but are not routinely recorded. The model we propose is based on the Bayesian social relations model. The results help us identify aspects of player performance. Data from the NBA 2004 and NBA 2005 finals are used throughout the project to illustrate our approach. Keywords: Bayesian social relations model, Dyadic data, WinBUGS iii Dedication In memory of my father, Zhong-Xuan Liu (1946-1994) iv Acknowledgements I would like to thank the people who have helped me go through this difficult, challenging yet exciting time of my life.

Davis was hired as the program’s fourth head coach on April 7, 2006. Davis owns a record of 85-48 (.639) overall and 41-23 (.641) in Conference USA play during his four seasons in Birmingham. He is now 200- 127 (.612) during his 10-year coaching career. Over his last three seasons alone, Davis has led the Blazers to a record of 70-32 (.686) and three consecutive NIT berths. UAB has now appeared in either the NCAA tournament or NIT in seven of the past eight years. The 2009-10 season also marked the 24th postseason appearance in the 32-year history of UAB basketball (13 NCAA appearances). Davis etched his name in the record books as he became only the second coach in UAB lore to reach 70 wins in a three-year span. The only other coach in program history to accom- plish the feat was Hall of Famer Gene Bartow, who reached the pinnacle on two separate occasions (73 wins from 1983-86 and 71 wins from 1984-87). Davis has been even tougher on foes when playing at Bartow Arena. Over the last three seasons alone, he has guided the team to a 41-5 home record, including 24 straight non-conference regular season home wins (UAB has won 31 straight non-conference regular sea- son home games overall).
