Anthony, Florida. He was 79. A native of Antigo, Wisconsin, Rice was a high school teacher before deciding to pursue a career in the horse industry. Several times leading trainer at Penn National in the 1970s and 80s, he became a pioneer in the yearling-to-juvenile pinhooking market, raising horses at his Indian Prairie Ranch in Anthony. Rice grew up alongside future Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and the two men shared a passion for horses. AHe was a dear friend and I can=t tell you what a great horseman he was,@ Lukas recalled Monday. AWe grew up about a half-mile apart and spent our whole boyhoods with these horses and traveling miles and miles to sales and shows. He was special and he had a great knack, a really good eye for a horse.@ Cont. p4 IN TDN EUROPE TODAY California Chrome in Gulfstream paddock | A Coglianese STEWARD’S CUP GOES TO PARAGON by Bill Finley Helene Paragon (Fr) (Polan {Fr}), formerly trained in Spain, Ask someone in horse racing why things are done a certain landed the G1 Stewards’ Cup at Sha Tin on Monday. He has the long, lean elegance of a classic Thoroughbred, reminiscent of his sire Colonel John and second damsire, Canadian Champion With Approval, yet Airoforce received precocious speed from his damsire Cuvee. Airoforce was victorious at distances ranging between 6 1/2-furlongs and 1 1/16-miles. Although he competed mainly on turf, Airoforce won a key stake over dirt. His immediate pedigree has dirt and turf attributes. A magnificent looking $350,00 OBS April sales purchase campaigned by John Oxley, Airoforce flashed precociousness and speed in his debut, drawing away to win a six-furlong turf sprint by 3 1/4-lengths in a sharp 1:10.34, just a second off the Kentucky Downs track record. Airoforce dominated the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) by 2 1/2-lengths over a full field of fourteen over the Keeneland turf, including Camelot Kitten, Surgical Strike. Airoforce faced a full field of high-class youngsters as the favorite in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). and missed the victory by a neck, after racing in traffic and being distracted in the stretch.

Sterling, I am greatly indebted to Honorable B. J. Peters, Enoch Smith and James Mof ) fett. I also freely used a sketch of Mt. Sterling pub lished four years ago by Walter Gruelle; I also obtained many valuable facts from Butler's and Collins' His tory of Kentucky. -Thomas Calk allowed me to in spect some ancient papers filled with important facts. A sketch in the Courier Journal a year ago supplied me with some pleasing suggestions. The destruction by fire of the early records of the town and county, has deprived me of much valuable material. I feel this sketch is very imperfect and almost unworthy of publication. It may, however, provoke investigation and develop new facts. I trust, at least, it will serve to preserve in the memories of the coming generations what has been gathered up concerning the history of our early days.-R. R.
