ABSTRACT: Ornithonyssus sylviarum is a hematophagous mite present in wild, domestic, and synanthropic birds. However, this mite can affect several vertebrate hosts, including humans, leading to dermatitis, pruritus, allergic reactions, and papular skin lesions. This study evaluated the epidemiological characteristics of O. sylviarum attacks on poultry workers, including data on laying hens, infrastructure and management of hen houses, and reports of attacks by hematophagous mites. In addition, a case of mite attack on a farm worker on a laying farm in the Midwest region in Minas Gerais is presented. It was found that 60.7% farm workers reported attacks by hematophagous mites. Correspondence analysis showed an association between reports of mite attacks in humans with (1) presence of O. sylviarum in the hen house, (2) manual removal of manure by employees, and (3) history of acaricide use. -

Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi. -

Introduction Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also referred to as monkey fever is an infectious bleeding disease in monkey and human caused by a highly pathogenic virus called KFD virus. It is an acute prostrating febrile illness, transmitted by infective ticks, especially, Haemaphysalis spinigera. Later KFD viruses also reported from sixteen other species of ticks. Rodents, Shrews, Monkeys and birds upon tick bite become reservoir for this virus. This disease was first reported from the Shimoga district of Karnataka, India in March 1955. Common targets of the virus among monkeys are langur (Semnopithecus entellus) and bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata). -

Cromroy2 Introduction The tropical fowl mite, commonly found on birds, has become a pest to people in areas of high bird populations or where birds are allowed to roost on roofs, around the eaves of homes, and office buildings. Nesting birds are the worst offenders. After the birds abandon their nests, the mites move into the building through windows, doors, and vents and bite the occupants. The bite is irritating, and some individuals react to the bite with prolonged itching and painful dermatitis. Several to many reports are received each year of mites invading homes. The mites are usually the tropical fowl mite found in the central and southern areas of the state. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar as espécies de ácaros hematófagos parasitos de Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) e analisar os índices de infestação em relação ao gênero, massa corporal e comprimento total dos hospedeiros. Para isso, cada um dos 100 pardais capturados na área urbana de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, foi sexado, pesado e medido. A coleta dos ácaros foi realizada após aplicação de um talco repelente de ectoparasitos sobre o corpo das aves. Pellonyssus reedi ocorreu em 29 pardais com intensidade média de 8,37 ácaros/hospedeiro e Ornithonyssus bursa ocorreu em duas aves, somente um hospedeiro macho adulto apresentou co-infestação. A prevalência e intensidade média de infestação por P. reedi entre hospedeiros machos e fêmeas adultos não apresentou diferença significativa, também não houve correlação entre a abundância dessa espécie, massa corporal e comprimento total dos pardais. -

There are over 160,000 described dipteran species worldwide (Pape & Thompson 2013) and their role is essential in the ecosystems. Although the European Diptera fauna is quite well known, there are some countries, such as Albania, that are extremely understudied regarding dipterans. According to Pape & Beuk (2013) only 932 species and subspecies have been reported from Albania. Nycteribiidae is a small family within the Hippoboscoidea superfamily and it contains 275 species worldwide (Dick & Patterson 2006). Nycteribiid bat flies are obligate, wingless, blood-sucking ectoparasites of bats and 16 species have been described in Europe so far (Pape et al. 2015). Although the Albanian bat fauna is rich with its 32 recorded species (Sachanowicz et al. 2016), previous works on bat flies in this country are sparse. Morgan Abstract The disease scabies is one of the earliest diseases of humans for which the cause was known. It is caused by the mite, Sarcoptes scabiei,thatburrowsintheepidermisoftheskinofhumans and many other mammals. This mite was previously known as Acarus scabiei DeGeer, 1778 before the genus Sarcoptes was established (Latreille 1802) and it became S. scabiei. Research during the last 40 years has tremendously increased insight into the mite’s biology, parasite-host interactions, and the mechanisms it uses to evade the host’s defenses. This review highlights some of the major advancements of our knowledge of the mite’s biology, genome, proteome, and immunomodulating abilities all of which provide a basis for control of the disease. Advances toward the development of a diagnostic blood test to detect a scabies infection and a vaccine to protect susceptible populations from becoming infected, or at least limiting the transmission of the disease, are also presented. A partir de GUIMARÃES & D 'ANDRETTA (1956) que resumiram e retifica ram as informações disponíveis sobre distribuição e hospedeiros dos nicteribidas americanos, outros registros referentes à material encontrado no Canadá, e anteriormente não citados por aqueles autores são aqui incluídos. Também não foram considerados registros relativos a hospedeiros não-quirópteros, por clara mente tratarem-se de equívocos na identificação do hospedeiro ou da procedência do parasito. Com exceção dos registros citados por GUIMARÃES & D ' A NDRETTA (1956), a citação repetida do mesmo material, por dois ou mais autores, não é aqui considerada. As 49 espécies de nicteribidas estão citadas em ordem alfabética, assim como os países e seus respectivos hospedeiros. Ao final do trabalho, é apresentado um quadro resumindo contendo as ocorrências de nicteribidas por países (Tab. I). Em relação aos hospedeiros, os seus nomes subespecíficos não fo ram utilizados; os nomes válidos e as sinonímias seguem KOOPMAN (1993).
