Konnichiwa! Few countries, if any, can match the rich culture of animation that Japan is so famous for. With short-film programs curated specifically for Tricky Women, award-winning anime, a manga drawing workshop and a live drawing performance as well two exhibitions, we are giving center stage to Japanese animated art by women. Specialists from the Manga Research Center in Kyoto will provide background information on the worldwide manga/anime boom, and the artists themselves will offer first-hand insights into their work. Let’s get to know Japan! The international competition and other festival sections – Animated Documentaries, the Österreich Panorama featuring new Austrian films, and Work Affairs – will give you an overview of current trends in inter/national animation. Enjoy five exciting days full of inspiration, emotion and discussion! We would like to thank the filmmakers, our jurors, our donors, our main sponsor, our other sponsors, our partner institutions, business and media partners, the teams at Metro Kinokulturhaus and Filmarchiv Austria and all those who support us and make Tricky Women possible! 2 3 Best Practice & Jury | Trailer | Awards WORKSHOPS LECTURE Friday, 17 March, Metro Kinokulturhaus – free admission! 13:00 Uhr: An unusual anime: In this Corner of the World Lecture: Prof Jaqueline Berndt, PhD, Kyoto Seika University (Graduate School of Manga Studies) and artist talk on the new anime ‘In this Corner Vanja Andrijevi´c, HR Elsy Lahner, AT Mitsuko Okamoto, JP of the World’ with renowned manga artist Fumiyo Kouno. is the producer and manager is among Austria’s leading started her career as a TV of Bonobostudio, a company experts on contemporary drawing producer for NHK. • Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 in Partnership with the Japan Foundation
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations.

Her father, Barek (Beryl or Ben) Eisenstein, was from Miechow and her mother, ReginaA Oksenhendler, was from Bedzin; both survived Auschwitz. They immigrated to Canada in 1948 and settled in Toronto’s Kensington Market neighbourhood, where Ben Eisenstein opened a kosher butcher shop. Eisenstein holds a degree in English from York University and stud- ied art in Israel and England. She has worked as a freelance editor and illustrator for several publishers and journals, and has reviewed books for the Globe and Mail. From October 2014 to February 2015, she was artist-in-residence at the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre in Toronto. Eisenstein’s illustrations have been fea- tured in a variety of Canadian publications, and her artwork has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Eisenstein is the author of I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2006), a graphic work that received the Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award in the cat- egory of Holocaust memoir. I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors has been translated into ten languages. A second project, Correspondences (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2013), is a joint publication with poet Anne Michaels. An accordion-style book, it pairs Eisenstein’s twenty-six gouache portraits with Michaels’s book-length poem.1 Correspondences also invokes the history and lasting effects of the Holocaust. Eisenstein is the first Canadian to publish a graphic memoir about her experience as the child of Holocaust survivors.
