Page 1/21 Abstract Plasmodium knowlesi is the main cause of malaria in Sarawak, where studies on vectors of P. knowlesi have been conducted in only two districts. Anopheles balabacensis and An. donaldi were incriminated as vectors in Lawas and An. latens in Kapit. We studied a third location in Sarawak, Betong, where of 2,169 mosquitoes collected over 36 days using human-landing catches, 169 (7.8%) were Anopheles spp. PCR and phylogenetic analyses identied P. knowlesi and/or P. cynomolgi, P. eldi, P. inui, P. coatneyi and novel Plasmodium spp. in salivary glands of An. latens and An. introlatus from the Leucosphyrus Group and in An. collessi and An. roperi from the Umbrosus Group. Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences indicated three P. knowlesi-positive An. introlatus had been misidentied morphologically as An. latens, while An.

  • Language Use and Attitudes As Indicators of Subjective Vitality: the Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia
Vol. 15 (2021), pp. 190–218 http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24973 Revised Version Received: 1 Dec 2020 Language use and attitudes as indicators of subjective vitality: The Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia Su-Hie Ting Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Andyson Tinggang Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Lilly Metom Universiti Teknologi of MARA The study examined the subjective ethnolinguistic vitality of an Iban community in Sarawak, Malaysia based on their language use and attitudes. A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.

MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Vol. 153: 283-291,1997 Published July 10 Mar Ecol Prog Ser Identifying the spawning estuaries of the tropical shad, terubok Tenualosa toli, using otolith microchemistry David A. ~ilton'~',Simon R. chenery2,Margaret J. arme er', Stephen J. M. Blaber1 'CSIRO Division of Marine Research. PO Box 120, Cleveland, Queensland 4163. Australia '~nalyticalGeochemistry Group, British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham NG12 5GG. United Kingdom ABSTRACT. The tropical shad, terubok Tenualosa toh, is known only from 2 large estuaries and the adlacent coast of northwest Borneo. Populations of this culturally and commerc~allyimportant specles have fallen to dangerously low levels during the 19905 In an attempt to conserve the species, the Sarawak state government has set up fisheries reserves to protect flsh during spawning in the estuar- les of the Lupar and Lassa rivers. Terubok are protandrous hermaphrodites that, at l+ years old, migrate to the ~nshoreareas of the adjacent coast after initially spawnlng as males To assess the effec- tiveness of the conservation measures we had to confirm that terubok spawn only in the 2 known spawning areas. We d~dthis by examining the elementdl composition at the nuclei of otoliths of fish using the new technique of LA-ICPMS (laser ablat~on-inducti\~elpcoupled plasmd mass spectron~etry). Otoliths of fish collected from 7 coastal sites and both estuarine spawnlng areas in 1994 had similar ele- mental composition. This confirmed that all fish were probably spawned in 1 of the 2 estuaries. How- ever, otoliths of fish collectcd from 2 of 8 coastal sites sampled in 1995 had significantly different ele- mental composition from the fish from the Lupar or Lassa estuaries.

  • Camera Trapping of Wildlife in the Newly Established Baleh National Park, Sarawak

The remaining forests in Sarawak are fragmented and isolated and their ability to support large sized mammals is of great concern. In view of this, camera trapping survey was conducted in the recently gazetted Baleh National Park to record the richness, activity pattern and distribution of medium-to-large sized mammals. A total of 15 infrared camera traps were set within the park. We identified at least 27 species of mammals, 12 birds and two reptiles. From the total mammalian species detected, four were listed as “totally protected” and 15 as “protected” under the Sarawak Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998. Additionally, under the IUCN 2018 Red List criteria, one species was identified as “critically endangered” (Manis javanica), one as “endangered” (Catopuma badia), seven as “vulnerable” and four as “near threatened”. This study had identified the occurrence and distribution of some rare, endangered and threatened species. The presence of these species can be used to identify core conservation sites within Baleh National Park.
