DIGITAL CIRCUITS 1.1 INTRODUCTION In a digital system, a more precise representation of a signal can be obtained by using more binary digits to represent it. While this requires more digital circuits to process the signals, each digit is handled by the same kind of hardware. In an analog system, additional resolution requires fundamental improvements in the linearity and noise characteristics of each step of the signal chain. Computer-controlled digital systems can be controlled by software, allowing new functions to be added without changing hardware. Often this can be done outside of the factory by updating the product’s software. So, the product’s design errors can be corrected after the product is in a customer’s hands. Information storage can be easier in digital systems than in analog ones. The noise-immunity of digital systems permits data to be stored and retrieved without degradation. In an analog system, noise from aging and wear degrade the information stored. In a digital system, as long as the total noise is below a certain level, the information can be recovered perfectly. Digital circuits are made from analog components. The design must assure that the analog nature of the components doesn’t dominate the desired digital behavior. MULTIVIBRATOR A multivibrator is an electronic circuit used to implement a variety of simple two-state systems such as oscillators, timers and flip-flops. It is characterized by two amplifying devices (transistors, electron tubes or other devices) cross-coupled by resistors and capacitors. There are three types of multivibrator circuit: • Astable, in which the circuit is not stable in either state it continuously oscillates from one state to the other. Due to this, it does not require a input (Clock pulse or other). • Monostable, in which one of the states is stable, but the other is not the circuit will flip into the unstable state for a determined period, but will eventually return to the stable state. This circuit is also known as a one shot. • Bistable, in which the circuit will remain in either state indefinitely. The circuit can be flipped from one state to the other. This circuit is also known as a latch or a flip-flop. See Time Figure.1.2 RC circuit for an explanation of this effect. BISTABLE MODE In bistable mode, the 555 timer acts as a basic flip-flop. The trigger and reset inputs (pins 2 and 4 respectively on a 555) are held high via pull-up resistors while the threshold input (pin 6) is simply grounded. Thus configured, pulling the trigger momentarily to ground acts as a ‘set’ and transitions the output pin (pin 3) to Vcc (high state). Pulling the reset input to ground acts as a ‘reset’ and transitions the output pin to ground (low state). No capacitors are required in a bistable configuration. Pins 5 and 7 (control and discharge) are left floating. ASTABLE MODE In astable mode, the ‘555 timer ‘ puts out a continuous stream of rectangular pulses having a specified frequency. Resistor R1 is connected between VCC and the discharge pin (pin 7) and another resistor (R2) is connected between the discharge pin (pin 7), and the trigger (pin 2) and threshold (pin 6) pins that share a common node. Hence the capacitor is charged through R1 and R2, and discharged only through R2, since pin 7 has low impedance to ground during output low intervals of the cycle, therefore discharging the capacitor. In the astable mode, the frequency of the pulse stream depends on the values of R1, R2 and C: Vcc 1 f = R 4 8 In(2) . C . MATERIALS Satellite receiver Low Noise Block Down Converter Receiver (set-up box) Television set Coaxial cable Magnetic compass III. PROCEDURE 1. Set up the satellite receiver. 2. Attach the LNB to the receiver properly and connect it at a distance to the set-up box or the receiver using the coaxial cable. 3. Connect the box to the TV and set the proper parameters. 4. Align the reflector to proper elevation and azimuth. IV. DISCUSSION Satellite television is television programming delivered by the means of communications satellite and received by an outdoor antenna, usually a parabolic mirror generally referred to as a satellite dish, and as far as household usage is concerned, a satellite receiver either in the form of an external set-top box or a satellite tuner module built into a TV set. Satellite TV tuners are also available as a card or a USB stick to be attached to a personal computer. In many areas of the world satellite television provides a wide range of channels and services, often to areas that are not serviced by terrestrial or cable providers. Direct-broadcast satellite television comes to the general public in two distinct flavors - analog and digital. This necessitates either having an analog satellite receiver or a digital satellite receiver. Analog satellite television is being replaced by digital satellite television and the latter is becoming available in a better quality known as high-definition television.
