As a result, azimuth and elevation do not have to be adjusted individually.Instead,theantennarotatesononlyoneaxis.Theantennamotorisinstalledonthe already existingvertical mast. The local latitude position of the location is then setupon the motor’sscalethusaligningtheaxis of rotationinthecorrectposition.Similartoafixedantenna installation, theelevationscaleon theantennamountmustbesetforasatelliteasclosetosouth aspossible.Inthesouthernhemisphereyouwouldbelookingforanorthernmostsatellite.The selectedsatelliteshouldliewithin5°ofyoursouthernmostposition;thesouthernmostposition being equal toyour locallongitude. For example, ifyour local longitude is 73° west, then the satelliteyouselectshouldbelocatedwithin+/5°of73°west,orwithintherange68°to78°west. USALS greatly simplifies the antenna setup. Ferguson receiver simply asks you for your local geographical coordinates and calculates the satellite positions on its own using a complex mathematicalformula.Thereceiverthendrivesthemotordirectlytotheselectedsatelliteposition. Onceyouhaveasignal, youneedonlyfinelyadjusttheantennamountandhorizontalposition(on themastitself)formaximumsignal.Iftheinitialsouthernsettingwasslightlyoff, itwouldnowbe corrected.Oncethefirstsatelliteisperfectlyset, alltheothersatellitesinthearcwouldalsobe automaticallysetassoonastheorbitalpositionoftheseadditionalsatellitesisenteredintothe receiver. WithoutUSALS,thealignmentoftheantennasystemissomewhatmoredifficult.DiSEqC1.2drives the antenna to the selected satellite position in almost the same way. But since the local geographicaldataismissing, themotordrivestoasatellitepositionbasedontheprimemeridian andtheequator. Therefore, whenaligning themotor for thefirsttime–andthenagain later onwithall the other satellite positions–alignment with theactual satellite position has to be achieved with the motor commands “move east/west”. Because of these difficulties, manufacturers of these motors make available helpful software on their web sites that enableyoutoeasilycalculatethetruepositionofasatellite.
