It is surrounded by Ranga Reddy District on the northern side, Gulbarga and Raichur districts of Karnataka state on the Western side, Guntur and Nalgonda on the Eastern side ; it is separated from Rayalaseema by the river, Thungabadra on the Southern side. It was under the Nizam rule before reorganisation of states . There are 64 mandals and three (3) urban areas in this district consisting of 1508 villages with a population of 35,13,299 as per 2001 census. The literacy rate of this district is 45.53% Agriculture: Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. They depend on rainwater for cultivation, though two rivers (1) Krishna and (2) Tungabadra flow through this district. Some parts of the districts are blessed with the water of Jurala Priyadarshini, Koilsagar, Saralasagar, and RDS canal. Major crops are Paddy, Jawar, ground nuts. Many families depend on agriculture or else migrate in search of livelihood. 8 lakh people migrate to various parts of the country every year. Thus the seasonal migration is one of the hurdles in achieving 100% enrolment. It is common across the district; and it is unfortunate that the labour from this district is well known as Palamoor labour who are fo r working across the count. The habitations are scattered here and therein the extrme eastern mandal i.e.Amrabad, majority of area is covered with forests and Nalamala hills - Chenchu, Koyas live in isolated habitations and they dependent on forest products only. SSA-Documentation-2004-2007-Final to Printing Industries: Majority number of industries or factories are situated in Kothur and Farooqnagar mandals; and spinning mills are situated in Makthal, Kalwakurthy, Mahabubnagar , Amangal, and Balanagar which are very near to Hyderabad. PilqrimaQe Centres: Alampur, situated on the bank of river Thungabadra is known as Dakshino. Kashi; and Umamaheshwaram, Jataprole, Manyamkonda, Beechupally Chenna Keshava Temple of Ghanpur are the important religious places in the district; Excavation has been done near Gangapur and some Boudda Aramas, Statues ofBudda are found out. Historical importance: “Pillalamarri” which is 3 Kms away from Mahabubnagar district headquarter is the oldest tree spread over 5 acres o f land. It is one of the historical places in Mahabubnagar district. Pillallamarry _ Mahabubnagar Pangal, Jattaprole forts Nizamkonda near Krishna river at Beechupalli are the historical places. The National High Way no. 7 facilitates transport to meet North and South of the country. Narayan pet, Gadwal ,Kotha kota are the places famous for silk and cotton sarees across the district. SSA - Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan 2004-07, MBNR Child Labour: Many school age children are forced to work in cotton fields, industries and mines (Doulthabad and Kodangal mandals). Child labour is the major problem in achieving 100% enrolment in the district. Poverty and illiteracy are the m,ain hurdles; so the parents are forced to make children work some where else and earn their livelihood. Lanquaae: Telugu is the local language, the second known language is Urdu. In western border villages, people do speak Kannada besides Telugu. The dialect slightly various in mandals that are near to state borders. Superstitions: The jogini system and child marriages are still prevailing specially in Narayan pet (Division) due to illiteracy. Social discrimination is also one of the barriers

Mi Aurobind© M-ar|, New I elki-ll@fl6 PREFACE The agenda for education incorporated in Vision 2020 document clearly states that the primary goal of the state will be to increase the overall literacy levels from 44% (now 61%) to 95%. The proposed 93rd Constitutional Amendment, to make education a FUNDAMENT/AL RIGHT has brought the focus on to “Free and Compulsory Elementary Education". Several programmes are being implemented to convert this vision into a reality. Micro level plans are being prepared with district, as unit of planning. The need for efficient flow of information right from school/habitation level is vital in micro level planning. The effort for Universalization of Elementary Education will require not only district/mandal level data but also habitation level data. I t is necessary to prepare habitation level plans and registers on all the key indicators, some of which are incorporated in this publication. Information on important parameters like educational institutions, enrolment, teachers. Special Schools and Teacher Education Institutions are furnished in this publication. Key education indicators like gross enrolment ratios, dropout rates, teacher - pupil ratios and performance in 5.5.C Examination are also included, which will enable the planners to know the eff iciency of the system well as wastage. The mandal-wise database is created in Oracle and a text file of the documents is provided in a floppy.
