Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

PIT SIGNALS LATE BRAKING NEWS FOR VARAC VINTAGE RACERS -OCTOBER, 2018 - JEREMY SALE Five VARAC members made the trip to VSCDA’s Gra8an event this year. Doug Elcomb brought the Dreossi (above) and a Mini Marcos, Doug Durrell his Bobsy FV, Brian Thomas his Lotus 23, Mark Brown his Lotus 7, and Ted Michalos covered off everything with a Sprite and a Ferrari… In this issue; Lime Rock, Shannonville, Road America, Indian Summer Trophy Races, CelebraQon, plus…Richard Navin wins Collier Cup! Jim Biscoe and Paddy Hopkirk, right. And, wait for it… EXciQng New Time Brackets! (Yawn.) VARAC Time Brackets! StarQng with the 2019 racing season, I’d like to create a single list of Qme brackets for all VARAC compeQtors. Currently we have 3 separate systems: Classic, which uses H, E, F, G, and V; Vintage Historic which uses VH1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; and Formula Classic which uses I, K and L. I am proposing we use the following: A – under 1.31 at CTMP (formerly CL H and VH1) 1 – 1.31 and slower (formerly CL E and VH1) 2 – 1.35 and slower (formerly CL F and VH1) 3 – 1.40 and slower (formerly CL G and VH2 and FC K) 4 – 1.45 and slower (formerly VH3 and FC I) 5 – 1.50 and slower (formerly VH4) 6 – 1.55 and slower (formerly VH5) Cars would display a single decal that includes the VARAC logo, their class and their bracket. For eXample, a Classic car that runs 1.37s at CTMP would be CL 2, a Vintage Historic car that turns 1.43s would be VH 3, and a Formula Classic car that turns 1.52s would be FC 5.

  • Pit Signals AUGUST 2014
PIT SIGNALS LATE BRAKING NEWS FOR THE VARAC VINTAGE RACER - By JEREMY SALE August 2014 Why are these people smiling? See inside. Plus, the Chinook (above) returns... Also Inside: Alain Raymond from Le Sommet des Légendes Alain’s Fiat Abarth, (above) plays with the big money cars at Mt-Tremblant. Legends Take to the Track! By Alain Raymond www.auto-historia.ca For its 50th anniversary, Circuit Mt-Tremblant witnessed the gathering of a number of legendary race cars that filed the Laurentian mountain air with thunderous sound and thrilled the attending spectators. For the past few years, Le Sommet des Légendes has been organized HMSA (Historic Motor Sports Association) based in California. With some 80 historic cars entered, numbers were below normal, due in part to the unusually high entry fee, as demonstrated by the handful of VARAC and CVQ members present. This fact was explained to the organizers with the hope that entry fee for future events will be reviewed, in order to attract more “grass roots” racers from Ontario, Quebec and New England. Having enjoyed the presence of a dozen historic Bugattis in 2013, I was looking forward to running with another set of legends, notably a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and a pair of pre-war Alfa Romeos. Owned by the McNeil family, the GTO (left) was driven – rather courageously I must add - by Mrs. Sandra McNeil. Courageously, for a few reasons: a GTO was reportedly sold last years in excess of 50 million dollars; she is racing at an age considered by many as retirement home material; her GTO is entirely original – at least aesthetically – as witnessed by the abundantly cracked paint and tattered interior.

The Lotus Legend 6 The Lotus Legend Special Edition 2017 The Chair chat Scroll down to the next page for a tribute written by Mike “Ninja” Chitty, who knew him well. Calendars In years gone by, we made The Lotus Register calendars. This was fun and in fact, I still have old examples sitting in my study. Problem was that is cost a bit and we got the inevitable criticism about “My car’s not there so why should I buy one?” At the last noggin, Stan Alford organised a presentation in which we learned of a system where we can create individual calendars, with our own pics! I was very impressed and have written it up on a following page. November – a busy month 1. AGM It’s a crowed month, November. The AGM is on Thursday 19 November, followed by the Year-end Function, then the Wings and Wheels day. Make sure you block off the time in your diary! 2. Year end function 2017 Special You should have received an invitation by separate e-mail to our year end function, to be held on 21 November 2009. Please Cover pic: make a plan to get there. 3. Celebrating 60 years of the Lotus Type 14 Elite and The Lotus Seven Pic above is of a modified S1 Lotus Seven and cover pic is of a Type 14 Elite. On the next page is an often-photographed example of an S1 Seven which is probably closer to original than the one above. These cars photographed by the editor at the 2004 Le Mans Classic Cars of 1957 This is what our American cousins thought a convertible should look like in 1957… Despite making fun of the Yanks, a car like this would be worth mega-$$$ if one owned it now! The advert on the following page shows what 1957 had to offer the Brits Exciting? Really? This, however, WAS exciting! But this WAS exciting – chalk and cheese compared to those other cars! Early Lotus publicity shots As was this – ground breaking, beautiful, economical, fast – and truly exciting! So what else happened in 1957 – apart from Lotus launching some very interesting new models? The Soviet Union sent the first space satellite into orbit - Sputnik 1.

  • Chapman Report
The Chapman Report Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org December 2005 SF Auto Show editor Yes, in our humble opinion, the GGLC had the best display of the entire auto show. Actually, there were many visitors to the show with the same opinion. The hit of the display appeared to be the 1963 Elite of Frans Nelson. It is absolutely immaculate, but most people were amazed that such a beautiful design could have been created so many years ago. But we had may examples of classic Lotuses: 1959 Lotus 11 of Richard Ruff 1959 Lotus 7a of James McClure 1960 Lotus 18 of Jack and Judy Fitzpatrick 1963 Lotus 7 of Tony Bates 196- 7 chassis of Franklin Rudolph 1963 Lotus 23 of Stan Rinne 1966 Lotus Cortina of Bruce Miller 1966 Lotus 41 of Kiyoshi Hamai 196- Lotus Elan of Kiyoshi Hamai 1972 Lotus Elan of David Anderson 1970 Lotus Europa of Tom Carney 1980 Lotus Esprit of John Zender 1991 Lotus Elan M100 of Mel Boss Many others donated their time, and we want to thank them, along with the above. This was quite a concession for many to take the time and energy to show their car. The length of time and the logistics of Moscone Center made this more of and effort than driving to Holiday Dinner/December Meeting the local concours for the day. I’m hoping that they, like me, now see this Saturday, December 10th, effort as worth it to show the public what wonders can come from a small Host: Capellini Ristorante car company from England.
