Parliamentarians' Tax Directory PARLIAMENTARIANS’ TAX DIRECTORY FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2016 (Published on 27 July 2017) FOREWORD Public trust and accountability across the board are the hallmarks of any strong democracy. The actions of public representatives in any democracy serve as an example for its citizens. Similarly, tax compliance by Parliamentarians plays an important role in promoting a culture of tax compliance in any country. Studies have shown that citizens exhibit a higher motivation to pay taxes when their public representatives act as role models by being tax compliant. In order to fulfil its commitment to transparency and accountability, the government published a tax directory of Honorable Parliamentarians for the tax years 2013, 2014 and 2015. This step was widely welcomed and appreciated as a measure to introduce greater transparency and promote a culture of tax compliance in the country. In line with the tradition of the last three years, a similar effort has been made to publish a tax directory of the Honorable Parliamentarians for the tax year 2016. The directory contains tax details of members of the Senate of Pakistan and Members of the National and Provincial Assemblies. I would like to appreciate the efforts of the Federal Board of Revenue for compiling and publishing this tax directory. Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization This Directory has been tabulated from Returns filed manually and electronically (till 26-Jul-2017). Manually filed Returns have been entered into the system. Note: Certain Parliamentarian, whose names are marked by *, have share income as Members of Associations of Persons. Since, Association of Persons pay tax as a separate entity, such share is not taxable in the hands of the Members. • The Gilgit ‘Textbook Controversy’ and Its Conflictual Context
Georg Stöber Religious Identities Provoked: The Gilgit ‘Textbook Controversy’ and its Conflictual Context1 Abstract Textbooks, and the curricula on which they are based, are often used to foster specific identities that might not be the identity of a substantial part of the population. If they meet with pre-existing strife, even textbooks can provoke violent outbreaks, which can only be understood in the context of the underlying conflict. This article will analyse one example, putting it in the context of textbook politics in South Asia. In Gilgit (Northern Areas of Pakistan), protests against presentations of religious practices in school textbooks resulted in riots and deaths in 2004 as well as in the closure of schools for one year. Even if this specific issue seemed to have been solved in May 2005, tension continued. The population of this region is religiously heterogeneous (despite being Muslim). Developments in the Islamic World elsewhere (Iran, Afghanistan) deepened the divide. The region experienced ‘sectarian clashes’ for quite some time, the authorities being unable or unwilling to control them. This regional case is linked to the general (not only educational) policies of Pakistan, especially to the promotion of “the ideology of Pakistan”. Despite meeting with some criticism, this concept is not only used to demarcate the Pakistani “self” from the (especially Indian) “other”, but also to do away with internal differences. However, the attempt at homogenisation is counterproductive where it can be interpreted as being directed against specific group identities and interests. On Thursday, June 3, 2004, “one person was killed and several were injured when Shia protestors clashed with security forces in Gilgit city”.2 As the correspondent wrote, the army had imposed a curfew and “was called out in Gilgit to maintain law and order” in expectation of demonstrations.

  • January 2016 NEWS COVERAGE PERIOD JANUARY 25TH to JANUARY 31ST, 2016 PROTESTERS DEMAND PROPER SHARE for GB in CPEC Dawn, January 25Th, 2016
January 2016 NEWS COVERAGE PERIOD JANUARY 25TH TO JANUARY 31ST, 2016 PROTESTERS DEMAND PROPER SHARE FOR GB IN CPEC Dawn, January 25th, 2016 ISLAMABAD: A large number of people belonging to Gilgit-Baltistan, including members of the area’s legislative assembly, on Sunday held a protest demonstration in front of National Press Club demanding proper share in China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). They also demanded that GB should be declared the fifth province of Pakistan so that the people of the backward area could get their basic rights. The protest was organised by the Youth of Gilgit-Baltistan, a non-political platform representing the youth of the area. Speaking on the occasion, member of the legislative assembly, Kacho Imtiaz, said people of GB could not get their basic rights even after 68 years. “We had passed a resolution in the legislative assembly that there should be three hubs of CPEC in GB but only one station is being given to us for loading and unloading of goods. Moreover, no industrial zone is being set up in GB,” he complained. Another MLA, Haji Rizwan, said basic rights should be ensured for the people of GB. “Moreover, the government of PML-N should implement the National Action Plan (NAP) in its letter and spirit and take action against terrorists instead of using the law for its own benefits,” he said. The protesters also demanded that Gilgit-Baltistan should get representation in the National Assembly, Senate and the National Finance Commission. Talking to Dawn, chairman of the GB Youth’s coordination committee, Hasnain Kazmi, said the government should give basic rights to the people of GB.
