Payson Harvey, a senior said, "My plan for college is to be an accountant so with this deeper

understanding of stocks and money really furthered my interest of working with money and hopefully in the future investing in the right stocks." Students learned some of the basics of market management.

Science teacher Ian McLean's marine ecology class made their way out to Kettle Cove State Park for a field excursion to mark the end of a four week unit on invertebrate zoology. While the forecast called for showers and winds gusting to 25 out of the NE, they were instead blessed with only dramatic clouds and just enough breeze to carry away the scent of the exposed intertidal zone. The goal was to fill their buckets with the greatest diversity of organisms and search for invasive Asian Shore Crabs, and to that end, they set a 15 year-and-counting record of 21 specimens - more than double any previous year.

High Mountain Institute (HMI) The Island School The Mountain School The Experiment In International Living AFS Where There Be Dragons The Oxbow School CIEE Maine Coast Semester @ Chewonki Alzar School School Year Abroad Greenheart Exchange

For Families of Juniors Last week School Counselors went into English 11 classes to talk to Juniors about the different criteria that Colleges and Universities look at when deciding whether to admit, waitlist, or deny student applicants. We went over the importance of taking appropriately challenging classes, earning solid grades, preparing for SATs and what a “good” score is (this is a tricky one!), extra-curriculars and/or after school jobs and why it is essential to have interests outside of academics, and many more related topics around the variety of criteria colleges look at when assessing applicants for admission.

In the month of December, we’ll go back into these same classes to do a Part II presentation which will entail talking with Juniors about what criteria they should be looking at in order to begin the process of finding colleges or universities that match their unique, individual academic and social goals.

For Families of Sophomores

If your child is enrolled in English 10 and/or Early US History this semester, ask them to show you the results of one or both of the surveys they took on Naviance.

In October, School Counselors went into English 10 classes to do a “Do What You Are” survey with Sophomores.

17

What is the Do What You Are Survey?

Do What You Are is a Personality assessment based on Jungian typology. It identifies these dimensions of personality: Introvert, Extravert, Sensing, Intuitive, Thinking, Feeling, Judging and Perceptive. It helps students to identify their natural preferences, gifts and talents. This information helps students increase self-understanding and enhances personal development. After completing the survey, students are often better able to do the following:

● Identify potential college majors and/or career fields ● Understand learning style ● Improve communication and relationships ● Increase appreciation for diversity ● Enhance study skills ● Increase motivation

Counselors also went into Early US History/AP US History classes the week of Oct 21-25th to do a Strengths Explorer with 10th graders.

What is a Strengths Explorer?

Strengths Explorer assesses 10 talent themes and identifies each student’s three strongest emerging talents such as Confidence, Dependability, or Future Thinker. It provides explanations of these themes, strategies for capitalizing on each, and action items to help students gain insight into their greatest talents – natural patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior – to leverage in the classroom and in life.

StrengthsExplorer Themes:

Achieving Caring Competing Confidence Dependability Discoverer Future Thinker Organizer

Your child’s School Counselor at Deering will often utilize the information gleaned from the Do What You Are and the StrengthsExplorer surveys later in the junior and senior years when we are working with your teen to map out their unique plan for career, college, and/or military after high school.

Attention Families of College Bound Seniors

The 2020-2021 FAFSA is now available- FAME has tools to help you file!

The FAFSA became available on October 1. Now is the time to get the FAFSA completed for the 2020-2021 academic year! There is no downside to filing early, and it is one of the best ways to maximize financial aid eligibility.

24

The 2020-2021 FAFSA requires 2018 income information. We strongly recommend using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool within the FAFSA to transfer 2018 income information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA. To make the process easier, be sure you have 2018 federal tax returns, including Schedules and W2s, in front of you when completing the FAFSA.

At least one school needs to be listed on the FAFSA, but additional schools can be added after the FAFSA has been submitted -- just return to FAFSA.gov.

25

Need help filing the FAFSA? Free help is available from FAME anytime:

1. Attend an In-Person FAFSA Help Session: FAME will be offering 14 In-Person FAFSA Help Sessions statewide starting on Thursday, October 10. Find and register for an event near you: https://www.famemaine.com/education/topics/filing-the-fafsa/in-person-he lp-sessions/

2. Use FAME's Online Help: Prepare to file by reviewing FAME's Get Ready to File the 2020-2021 FAFSA checklist. View our Filing the FAFSA video. Follow our 3-step guide: What You Need to File, Filling Out the Form and After You File. Find answers to Frequently Asked Questions.
