Medieval sources, including chronicles and inquisitional records, have presented an overwhelmingly negative and biased account of the beliefs and actions of the Order of Apostles, which has then been uncritically repeated by most English- language scholarship, providing only a cursory overview of the Order, and often neglecting to analyze the intentions of medieval authors such as the Franciscan, Salimbene of Parma, and the Dominican inquisitor, Bernard Gui. This oversight has perpetuated a history of the Apostles that portrays them as misguided religious enthusiasts who quickly turned to violence in order to force their apostolic lifestyle on the unsuspecting medieval laity. As this dissertation argues, the Order did not foolishly seek to imitate the early apostles, but its members, including its founder, Gerard Segarelli. were instead part of larger orthodox trend among both the medieval laity and ecclesiastics who sought a more active role in religious life. By reexamining Salimbene's Cronica, the anonymous Historia Fratris Dulcini Heresiarche and Bernard Gui's De Secta Pseudo-Apostolorum, along with, inquisitorial records, this study explores the message of poverty, penance and communalism that appealed to and attracted both women and men from various social classes to the Order. This study also disputes the commonly held belief that the Order, 7 especiaily under its second leader, Fra Doicino, was an actively violent apocalyptic group, first, by documenting the numerous instances where he and his followers consciously avoided conflict with episcopal and feudal authorities, and, second, by situating Doicino and the Apostles within the larger framework of the tumultuous social and political climate of Valsesia, in northern Italy. This dissertation therefore reevaluates the Order of Apostles as more sophisticated and less violent than previously imagined. 8 INTRODUCTION On February 28,1993, while an undergraduate at the University of Oregon, I watched a news story developing in Waco, Texas, about a failed federal government raid on a fortified compound of "cult" members. According to most media outlets, the Bureau of AJcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) had been in the process of serving a warrant regarding the possession and sale of illegally modified firearms when members of the "cult" fired upon them, killing four BATF agents and wounding several others. Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Jessica Wolfe Patrick O’Neill Mary Floyd-Wilson Reid Barbour Megan Matchinske ©2019 Jerrod Nathan Rosenbaum ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Jerrod Rosenbaum: Beyond the Bosphorus: The Holy Land in English Reformation Literature, 1516-1596 (Under the direction of Jessica Wolfe) This dissertation examines the concept of the Holy Land, for purposes of Reformation polemics and apologetics, in sixteenth-century English Literature. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

  • Irenaeus Shed Considerable Light on the Place of Pentecostal Thought for Histories That Seek to Be International and Ecumenical
    Orphans or Widows? Seeing Through A Glass Darkly By Dr. Harold D. Hunter Abstract Scholars seeking to map the antecedents of Pentecostal distinctives in early Christendom turn to standard reference works expecting to find objective summaries of the writings of Church Fathers and Mothers. Apparently dismissing the diversity of the biblical canon itself, the writers of these reference works can be found manipulating patristic texts in ways which reinforce the notion that the Classical Pentecostal Movement is a historical aberration. This prejudice is evident in the selection of texts and how they are translated and indexed as well as the surgical removal of pertinent sections of the original texts. This problem can be set right only by extensive reading of the original sources in the original languages. The writings of Irenaeus shed considerable light on the place of Pentecostal thought for histories that seek to be international and ecumenical. Introduction I began advanced study of classical Pentecostal distinctives at Fuller Theological Seminary in the early 1970s. Among those offering good advice was the then academic dean of Vanguard University in nearby Costa Mesa, California, Russell P. Spittler. While working on a patristic project, Spittler emphasized the need for me to engage J. Quasten and like scholars. More recently I utilized Quasten et al in dialogue with William Henn in a paper presented to the International Roman Catholic - Pentecostal Dialogue which convened July 23-29, 1999 in Venice, Italy. What follows is the substance of the paper delivered at that meeting.i The most influential editions of Church Fathers and Mothers available in the 20th Century suffered from inadequate translation of key passages.

The dissertation first surveys the history and reputation of the Latin treatise to I600 and sketchs the lives of the English translators. It then establishes the facts of publication of the translations and identifies the Latin texts used in them. Finally it analyzes the translations themselves— their syntax, diction, and English prose style in general— against the background of the theory and prac­ tice of translation in their respective periods. I have examined copies of the numerous editions of the translations in the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Library of Congress, and the libraries of the Ohio State University and the University of Illinois.     2 Historic Churches on the High Road to Taos his northbound tour includes churches between the Santuario de Chimayó (discussed in the previous chapter) and San Francisco T de Asís in Ranchos de Taos. Córdova, Truchas, Ojo Sarco, and Las Trampas are missions of Holy Family Parish in Chimayó; Chamisal, Llano, Picurís, Río Lucio, and Placita are missions of San Antonio de Padua parish in Peñasco; and San Francisco de Asís is the mother church and Talpa a mis- sion of the parish in Ranchos de Taos. San Antonio De Padua, Córdova Córdova was initially settled by 1750, but its adobe church, San Antonio, was not built until 1832. The retablos and many of the bultos in the church are works of one of New Mexico’s outstanding santeros, [José] Rafael Aragón. Aragón moved his family to Córdova—then called Pueblo Quemado— after his wife died in 1832. He was about thirty-six at the time, and shortly after, between 1834 and 1838, he was commissioned to oversee a redesign of the church interior and to paint the three altar screens that are still in San Antonio today. A later resident of the village, José Dolores López (1868–1937), pioneered the woodcarving style that is now associated with Córdova. The tradition continues among his descendants and others, and there are signs in the village for home- based workshops and galleries. Visits to San Antonio are generally limited to the exterior unless they coincide with Las Posadas, Holy Week, or the feast day, celebrated on the Saturday or Sunday closest to June 13.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RAPTURE Tom’s Perspectives by Thomas Ice One of the most often cited objections to pretribulationism is that it is a new teaching in church history having only come on the scene in the 1830s. It is often argued that if the pre-trib rapture were biblical then it would have been taught earlier and throughout church history. In the last decade, individuals have found a number of pre-1830 references to a pre-trib rapture. Here is a summary of that evidence. THE EARLY CHURCH Since imminency is considered to be a crucial feature of pretribulationism by scholars such as John Walvoord,1 it is significant that the Apostolic Fathers, though posttribulational, at the same time just as clearly taught the pretribulational feature of imminence. Since it was common in the early church to hold contradictory positions without even an awareness of inconsistency, it would not be surprising to learn that their era supports both views.

Bräunlein Flagellation is the act of whipping the human body by using flexible instruments such as the whip, the scourge, or cat-o’-nine-tails. Flagellation can be located in the context of law, religion, medicine, or sexual excitation. In many cases the juridical and religious aspects are indivisible, whereas sexual arousal by (self-) flagellation is a distinguished phenomenon of Western modernity. In two monotheistic traditions—Roman Catholicism and Shia Islam—self-flagellation plays a role until today. Flagellation in Antiquity The use of flogging instruments has been a long legal tradition of corporal punishment. The Latin word flagellum designates a multi-thong type scourge (whip, lash) with interlaced pieces of metal or bones that inflicts severe wounds on the body of the convict. The Roman law prescribed punishment by the flagellum either to extract a confession or as an overture to execution or as a distinct penalty. In the ancient Latin world flagellation was considered an extreme, gruesome penalty that caused not only tremendous pain but oftentimes grave mutilation and even death. Roman citizens were exempt from being sentenced to scourging whereas noncitizens were subject to it. Furthermore, the whipping of slaves was a common practice throughout the antique world. The ritualistic usage of the whip was practiced in various Greco-Roman and Egyptian cults, namely, the cult of Isis, the Dionysian cult, the Thargelia festival, or the Roman festival of Lupercalia.
