Following a two-week break for World Cup qualifiers, the Saints will travel to champions Manchester United on the back of three straight victories and five clean sheets in seven outings, a remarkable effort for a side spending just its second season back in English soccer’s top tier after a seven-year absence. A trip to Old Trafford is one that many teams fear but given United have already lost three league games under new manager David Moyes, including a 4-1 thrashing by Manchester City, the south coast club will head north with a renewed sense of optimism and expectation. “I always look forward to this kind of pressure in my career, it is what I thrive on, what I relish,” manager Mauricio Pochettino said after his side’s 2-0 win over Swansea City on Sunday. “The players need to be a lot more self-demanding, very ambitious and learn how to withstand the great expectation that is being placed on them.” Southampton are not the only team ignoring expectations, with Arsenal, buoyed by the record-signing of TURIN: Juventus’ defender Giorgio Chiellini (right) and Juventus’ defender Andrea Barzagli celebrate after scoring dur- German playmaker Mesut Ozil, sitting on top of the league after ing the Serie A football match against AC Milan. — AFP a rare goal from Jack Wilshere secured a point at West Bromwich Albion. Mr Caspar Glyn QC (instructed by Mishcon de Reya LLP ) for the Defendant. Judgment Mrs Justice Whipple: I. Introduction 1 The Claimant was the Director of Football of the Defendant football club from 10 July 2014 until his dismissal on 26 January 2015. The Claimant claims the sums specified in his contract of employment (the “Contract”) as falling due on termination without notice. In the alternative, he claims damages for wrongful termination. He also claims for salary, expenses and accrued holiday pay due at the date of dismissal. 2 The Defendant denies the claim. The Defendant contends that it was entitled to dismiss the Claimant summarily. The Defendant wrote to the Claimant on 26 January 2015 saying he was dismissed with immediate effect “ as a consequence of serious misconduct by you that have brought the Club into an unbearable situation, as well as the breaking by you of the good faith principle underlying the employment contract” . No explanation was given in that letter or at that time. 3 The Defendant now contends that its reason for dismissing the Claimant, at that time, was the discovery of the Claimant's overspending on players and failure to admit to that overspending when questioned.

  • Are the Black Lions of Ethiopia Y to Maul Zambia?
The Horn Times Sport, 20 January 2013 Match build up; are the black lions of Ethiopia ready to maul Zambia? (By Getahune Bekele, Nelspruit - South Africa.) Despite the annoying mannerism of Ethiopian Football Association boss and top TPLF cadre Sahilu Gebremariam who prevented the players from meeting their passionate fans at the Oliver Tambo air port in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, the colorful country men and women are streaming to the city of Nelspruit for Monday’s crunch battle against Zambia. Will classy goal poacher Saladin said, leader of the pride Degu Debebe, power house Yared Zenabu and the inspirational Adane Girma catapult Ethiopia, the 1957 runners up and the 1962 winners to glory? Although it is unfair to compare the current crop of players to the 1962 intrepid soldiers of the lion of Judah, they do have what it takes to bring back the glory days of yester year soccer. We are told that the free kick specialist of the black lions who can bend it like David Beckham is defender Abebaw Butako with Saladin deputizing to take those around the 18 yard area. Fuad Ibrahim of Minnesota stars in the US is aiming high to share the goal scoring responsibility with Saladin. Dangerous crosses expected to come from the man known for his electrifying pace, Yusuf Saleh of Syrianska club in Sweden. Our goal keeper, the proven shot stopper Sisaye Bancha will be well protected by the likes of Biadgelegn Elias, Aynalem Hailu, Asrat Megersa, Alula Girma and co while the acrobatic coffee goal minder Jemal Tassew waits on the wings to grab his chance if Bancha fails to stay switched on for the crucial 90 minutes against the Zambians.

FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND ECONOMICS Working Paper Series Working Paper No. 2018-10 THE SUPERSTAR CODE - DECIPHERING KEY CHARACTERISTICS AND THEIR VALUE Franziska Prockl May 2018 THE SUPERSTAR CODE - DECIPHERING KEY CHARACTERISTICS AND THEIR VALUE. Franziska Prockl Paderborn University, Management Department, Chair of Organizational, Media and Sports Economics, Warburger Str. 100, D-33098 Paderborn. May 2018 Working Paper ABSTRACT The purpose of the presented research is to advance the superstar literature on the aspect of superstar’s characteristics and value. Typically, superstar research is faced with one problem: They apply the same criteria to determine who their superstars are as to describe them later because they lack “an objective measure of star quality” (Krueger, 2005, p.18). To avoid this complication, the author chose to study Major League Soccer’s (MLS) designated players as this setting present a unique, as discrete, assignment of star status. MLS has formally introduced stars in 2007 under the designated player (DP) rule which delivers over 100 star-observations in the last ten years to investigate MLS strategy of star employment. The insights from this data set demonstrate which characteristics are relevant, whether MLS stars can be categorized as Rosen or Adler stars, and what the MLS pays for and in this sense values most. A cluster analysis discovers a sub group of ten stars that stand out from the others, in this sense superstars. A two-stage regression model confirms the value stemming from popularity, leadership qualities, previous playing level, age and national team experience but refutes other typical performance indicators like games played and goals scored or position.
