Question 1: Please provide specific sources for evidence that the Commission could use in estimating costs and the impact of proposals on journey time and capacity. For schemes already proposed other than by Railfuture, such as those listed on p36, much information is already available from Network Rail, SNTBs (TfN, Midlands Connect), local and combined authorities, TOCs, DfT. Campaign organisations. For additional schemes put forward by Railfuture, further work would need to be done, though campaign groups such as SENRUG, SELRAP, MEMRAP and CRIL may have initial estimates for specific lines or areas. -

Recent attempts to reveal a palaeokarst hollow in the station car park at Miller’s Dale, Peak District John Hunter Abstract: Examples of contemporaneous palaeokarst surfaces within in the Peak Limestone Group of Derbyshire, as described in geological literature in previous decades, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and examine. One palaeokarst channel exposed in a rock face at the back of Miller’s Dale railway station was first reported by F. W. Cope in the 1930s, and recent works have seen a measure of conservation of the site. On June 1, 1863, the Midland Railway Company opened with its abandoned quarries and excavations for stations, a section of line from Rowsley to Buxton in the central was designated an SSSI and also a key national earth Peak District, as part of the route that connected Derby heritage site by the Geological Conservation Review. with Manchester by 1867. The parish of Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside is located at the western edge of the Dark Peak landscape area of the Peak District National Park. In terms of area, approximately half of the parish is within the National Park, although it is worth noting the majority of development and population of the parish are outside of the National Park boundary. Chinley and Buxworth are the main settlements which are located to the north of the A6 road, outside the National Park. Historically, Chinley was a Anglo-Saxon settlement of scattered farmsteads. During the 17th century the local area was mined and quarried and consequently Chinley’s population grew. These local industries developed further following the building of the Peak Forest Canal and tramway in 1799 and again when the railway came in 1866. The addition of a passenger line in 1894 saw further population growth. However, the closures of the mines and quarry in the early 20th century saw the population decline. It declined further following WWII when the passenger service was reduced, however in recent years there has been a significant amount of new housing development in proximity of the parish and the area has become a very popular commuting area. Further development is also anticipated soon. New businesses have opened recently in the food and beverage, accommodation and childcare sectors. The area is a popular walking, cycling and horse-riding area with the Peak Forest Tramway Trail and Bugsworth Basin also popular attractions.
