  • The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick
THE GOALIE’S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK Arthur Brauss and Erica Pluhar in The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick (West Germany/Austria 1971) by Wim Wenders © Wim Wenders Stiftung 2014 Having remained commercially unavailable for over three decades, the new 4K restored and remastered version of Wim Wenders’ 1972 classic THE GOALIE’S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK receives its UK premiere at the historic Regent Street Cinema, London on 31st October 2017. Commissioned by the Wim Wenders Foundation and supervised by director Wim Wenders, this long-awaited remastered release comes to UK cinemas from January 2017 and will then be available on dual-format Blu-ray and DVD from 26th February with a comprehensive array of extras including an exclusive interview by Wim Wenders. The goalkeeper Josef Bloch (Arthur Brauss) is sent off after committing a foul during an away game. This causes him to completely lose his bearings. He wanders aimlessly through the unfamiliar town, spends the night with the box-office attendant of a movie theatre (Erika Pluhar) and strangles her the next morning. But instead of turning himself in or fleeing, Bloch then goes to his ex-girlfriend’s (Kai Fischer) place in the country and passively waits there for the police to come and arrest him. As Wenders himself has stated, the visual idiom of Hitchcock’s films provided the model for his debut film. He adheres minutely to the thoroughly “cinematic” source, a novella by Peter Handke. With his cameraman Robby Müller and his editor Peter Przygodda - both of whom had already worked with him on his film thesis at the HFF (Munich University of Television and Film) - in THE GOALIE’S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK, Wenders set forth a collaboration that would weld this team together for years.

  • Alice in the Cities
ALICE IN THE CITIES Technically, ALICE IN THE CITIES is Wenders’s fourth film, but he himself often refers to it as “his first,” because it was during this film that he discovered the genre of the road movie. (It would later become the first part of his Road Movie Trilogy, together with WRONG MOVE and KINGS OF THE ROAD.) It was also his first film to be shot partly in the US and the first to feature his alter ego, Phillip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler). ALICE is often compared with Charlie Chaplin’s THE KID. In 1974 it won the German Critics Prize. The German journalist Phillip Winter wants to write a story about America, but is unable to accomplish anything but a series of Polaroids before disappointedly beginning his journey back home. At the same time, he reluctantly agrees to take little Alice (Yella Rottländer) with him, because her mother (Lisa Kreuzer)— whom he meets in New York on the day before his departure—has urgent business to take care of there. In Amsterdam, the mother then fails to appear as they had agreed, and so Winter and Alice set out to try to find Alice’s grandmother in the Ruhr region. During their search together, their initial mutual dislike gradually transforms into a heart-felt affection. Fall 1988 71 Estrangement and Engagement: Sam Shepard's Dramaturgical Strategies Susan Harris Smith Current scholarship reveals an understandable preoccupation with and confusion over Sam Shepard's most prominent characteristics, his language and imagery, both of which are seminal features of his technical innovation. In their attempts to describe or define Shepard's idiosyncratic dramaturgy, critics variously have called it absurdist, surrealistic, mythic, Brechtian, and even Artaudian. Most critics, too, are concerned primarily with his themes: physical violence, erotic dynamism, and psychological dissolution set against the cultural wasteland of modern America (Marranca, ed.). But in focusing on Shepard's imagery, language, and themes, some critics ignore theatrical performance. Beyond observing that many of Shepard's role-playing characters engage in power struggles with each other, few critics have concerned themselves with Shepard's structural strategies or with the ways in which he manipulates his audience. One who has addressed the issue, Bonnie Marranca, writes: Characters often engage in, "performance": they create roles for themselves and dialogue, structuring new realities. ... It might be called an aesthetics of actualism. In other words, the characters act themselves out, even make them• selves up, through the transforming power of their imagina• tion. An Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh and the author of Masks in Modern Drama, Susan Harris Smith is currently working on a book on American drama. A shorter version of this article was presented at the South• eastern Modern Languages Association in 1985. 72 Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism Because the characters are so free of fixed reality, their imagination plays a key role in the narratives.
