Migrations: A Meridians Interview with Elif Shafak Elif Safak, Myriam J. A. Chancy Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism, Volume 4, Number 1, 2003, pp. 55-85 (Article) Published by Duke University Press DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/mer.2004.0006 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/51147 [ This content has been declared free to read by the pubisher during the COVID-19 pandemic. ] Migrations A Meridians Interview with Elif Shafak In the Fall of 2002, the Five College Women’s Center based at Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, welcomed a number of women scholars and writers as fellows in the Center for the fall and spring semesters as well as for full-year appointments. Elif Shafak was one of the fellows in residence for the 2002–2003 academic year. Although she came to the Center as a scholar continuing her work on gender and sexuality in the social sciences, a visit to the offices of Meridians during our Fall Open House revealed that she is an accomplished and award-winning novelist in her home country of Turkey. Her first novel, Pinhan, published in 1998, was awarded the Mevlana Prize in Turkey—a recognition given to the best works in mystical / transcendental literature. The novel tells the story of a hermaphrodite mystic—a little-known but revered tradition inside the Sufi orders. Pinhan explores the question of identity at the nexus of physical and metaphysical definitions. Her second novel, The Mirrors of the City, is about a Sephardic Jew who moves to seventeenth-century Istanbul after being expelled from Spain and centers on the themes of estrangement and deterritorialization. -

Identity and Narrative in Doris Lessing's and J.M. Coetzee's Life Writings
Identity and narrative in Doris Lessing's and J.M. Coetzee's Life Writings ENG-3992 Shkurte Krasniqi Master’s Thesis in English Literature Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education University of Tromsø Spring 2013 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Professor Gerd Karin Bjørhovde for her constructive criticism and for encouraging me to work on this thesis. She is an inspiration to me. I would also like to thank my family for supporting me from afar: you are always on my mind. Last but not least, I am grateful to have my husband Jørn by my side. Abstract The main focus of this thesis is the manner in which Doris Lessing and J.M Coetzee construct their identities in their life writings. While Lessing has written a “classical” autobiography using the first person and past tense, Coetzee has opted for a more fictional version using the third person and the present tense. These different approaches offer us a unique opportunity to look into the manner in which fiction and facts can be combined and used to create works of art which linger permanently between the two. It is also interesting to see how these two writers have dealt with the complications of being raised in Southern Africa and how that influences their social and personal identities. In the Introduction I present the writers and their oeuvres briefly. In Chapter 1, I explain the terms connected with life writing, identity and narrative. In the second chapter I begin by looking into the manner in which their respective life writings begin and what repercussions does using the first and the third person have? In the third chapter I analyse their relational identities, i.e. -
Charlotte Barslund Has Translated Several Norwegian and Danish Writers, Including Jo Nesbø and Karin Fossum
Vigdis Hjorth (born 1959) is a Norwegian novelist whose work has been recognised by many prizes. She writes about the dilemmas of living in modern society; her characters struggle to come to terms with a rapidly changing world and to find a meaningful way to integrate with others and realise their own potential. In this novel she combines the political with the personal, as she also does in Snakk til meg (Talk To Me, 2010), about the problems of a long-distance intercultural relationship, and Leve Posthornet! (Long Live the Postal Service! 2012), which examines the clash between local, ‘people-friendly’ services and global corporations. Her latest novel, Arv og miljø (Inheritance and Environment, 2016), a searing account of sexual abuse, has aroused heated debate about the relationship between fiction and reality. Charlotte Barslund has translated several Norwegian and Danish writers, including Jo Nesbø and Karin Fossum. Her translation of Per Petterson’s I Curse the River of Time was shortlisted for the Independent 2011 Foreign Fiction award, and that of Carsten Jensen’s We, the Drowned was nominated for the 2016 International Dublin Literary Award. Il Castellet 'Italiano' La Porta Per La Nuova Letteratura Latinoamericana
Rassegna iberistica ISSN 2037-6588 Vol. 38 – Num. 104 – Dicembre 2015 Il Castellet ‘italiano’ La porta per la nuova letteratura latinoamericana Francesco Luti (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, España) Abstract This paper seeks to recall the ‘Italian route’ of the critic Josep Maria Castellet in the last century, a key figure in Spanish and Catalan literature. The Italian publishing and literary worlds served as a point of reference for Castellet, and also for his closest literary companions (José Agustín Goytisolo and Carlos Barral). All of these individuals formed part of the so-called Barcelona School. Over the course of at least two decades, these men managed to build and maintain a bridge to the main Italian publishing houses, thereby opening up new opportunities for Spanish literature during the Franco era. Thanks to these links, new Spanish names gained visibility even in the catalogues of Italian publishing houses. Looking at the period from the mid- 1950s to the end of the 1960s, the article focuses on the Italian contacts of Castellet as well as his publications in Italy. The study concludes with a comment on his Latin American connections, showing how this literary ‘bridge’ between Barcelona and Italy also contributed to exposing an Italian audience to the Latin American literary boom.
