[email protected] La hipótesis de Gaia propone que a partir de unas condiciones iniciales que hicieron posible el inicio de la vida en el planeta, fue la propia vida la que las modificó. Sin embargo, desde el inicio del Antropoceno la humanidad tiene un papel protagónico en dichas modificaciones, e.g. el aumento del CO2 en la atmósfera. Se estima que para fines de este siglo, se alcanzarían concentraciones de CO2 que el planeta no registró en los últimos 30 Ma. La información para comprender como funcionarían los sistemas terrestres con estos niveles de CO2 está contenida en los registros de períodos cálidos y en las grandes transiciones climáticas del pasado geológico. -

Tonni2,*** ABSTRACT The age and phyletic context of mammals that dispersed between North and South America during the past 9 m.y. is summarized. The presence of a Central American province of cladogenesis and faunal differentiation is explored. One apparent aspect of such a province is to delay dispersals of some taxa northward from Mexico into the continental United States, largely during the Blancan. Examples are recognized among the various xenar- thrans, and cervid artiodactyls. Whereas the concept of a Central American province has been mentioned in past investigations it is upgraded here. Paratoceras (protoceratid artio- dactyl) and rhynchotheriine proboscideans provide perhaps the most compelling examples of Central American cladogenesis (late Arikareean to early Barstovian and Hemphillian to Rancholabrean, respectively), but this category includes Hemphillian sigmodontine rodents, and perhaps a variety of carnivores and ungulates from Honduras in the medial Miocene, as well as peccaries and equids from Mexico. For South America, Mexican canids and hy- drochoerid rodents may have had an earlier development in Mexico. Remarkably, the first South American immigrants to Mexico (after the Miocene heralds; the xenarthrans Plaina and Glossotherium) apparently dispersed northward at the same time as the first Holarctic taxa dispersed to South America (sigmodontine rodents and the tayassuid artiodactyls). -
Is Our Understanding of Santana Group Pterosaur Diversity Biased by Poor Biological and Stratigraphic Control?
Anhanguera taxonomy revisited: is our understanding of Santana Group pterosaur diversity biased by poor biological and stratigraphic control? Felipe L. Anhanguerids comprise an important clade of pterosaurs, mostly known from dozens of three-dimensionally preserved specimens recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Romualdo Formation (northeastern Brazil). They are remarkably diverse in this sedimentary unit, with eight named species, six of them belonging to the genus Anhanguera. However, such diversity is likely overestimated, as these species have been historically diagnosed based on subtle differences, mainly based on the shape and position of the cranial crest. In spite of that, recently discovered pterosaur taxa represented by large numbers of individuals, including juveniles and adults, as well as presumed males and females, have crests of sizes and shapes that are either ontogenetically variable or sexually dimorphic. Methods. We describe in detail the skull of one of the most complete specimens referred to Anhanguera, AMNH 22555, and use it as a case study to review the diversity of anhanguerids from the Romualdo Formation. In order to accomplish that, a geometric morphometric analysis was performed to assess size-dependent characters with respect to the premaxillary crest in the 12 most complete skulls bearing crests that are referred in, or related to, this clade, almost all of them analyzed first hand. Results. This new format combines the benefts of traditional meetings (i.e., providing a forum for discussion, including guest lectures, feld trips or the production of an abstract book) with the advantages of the online platforms, which allow to reach a high number of researchers along the world, promoting the participation of palaeontologists from developing countries. -

[email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT – We describe isolated teeth found in the locality “Sítio Piveta” (Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone, Candelaria Sequence, Upper Triassic of the Paraná Basin). The material consists of five specimens, here classified into three different morphotypes. The morphotype I is characterized by pronounced elongation, rounded base and symmetry between lingual and labial surfaces. The morphotype II presents serrated mesial and distal edges, mesial denticles decreasing in size toward the base, distal denticles present until the base and asymmetry, with a flat lingual side and rounded labial side. The morphotype III, although similar to morphotype II, has a greater inclination of the posterior carinae. The conservative dental morphology in Archosauriformes makes difficult an accurate taxonomic assignment based only on isolated teeth. However, the specimens we present are attributable to “Rauisuchia” (morphotype II and III) and, possibly, Phytosauria (morphotype I). The putative presence of a phytosaur in the Carnian Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone would have impact in the South American distribution of the group. The taxonomic assignments proposed herein contribute to the faunal composition of the Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone, a critical unit on the study of the Upper Triassic radiation of archosaurs. -

Their problematic taxonomic resolution comes from the fact that most taxa are represented only by a few and/or mostly incomplete specimens. In the last few decades, renewed interest in early archosaur evolution has helped to clarify some of these problems, but further studies on the taxonomic and paleobiological aspects are still needed. In the present work, we describe new material attributed to the ‘rauisuchian’ taxon Prestosuchus chiniquensis, of the Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone, Middle Triassic (Ladinian) of the Santa Maria Supersequence of southern Brazil, based on a comparative osteologic analysis. Additionally, we present well supported evidence that these represent juvenile forms, due to differences in osteological features (i.e., a subnarial fenestra) that when compared to previously described specimens can be attributed to ontogeny and indicate variation within a single taxon of a problematic but important -

Email: [email protected] Manuscriptreceived:2June2014,accepted:6January2015 Abstract Stable oxygen isotope values of inoceramid marine bivalve shells recovered from Bentiaba, Angola, are utilised as a proxy for paleotemperatures during the Late Cretaceous development of the African margin of the South Atlantic Ocean. The d18O values derived from inoceramids show a long-term increase from –3.2‰ in the Late Turonian to values between –0.8 and –1.8‰ in the Late Campanian. Assuming a constant oceanic d18Ovalue,an∼2‰ increase may reflect cooling of the shallow marine environment at Bentiaba by approximately 10°. Bentiaba values are offset by about +1‰ from published records for bathyal Inoceramus at Walvis Ridge. This offset in d18O values suggests a temperature difference of ∼5° between coastal and deeper water offshore Angola. -

The apparently rapid shift in mammalian ecomorphs from small, largely insectivorous forms to many small-to-large-bodied, diverse taxa has driven a hypothesis that the end-Cretaceous heralded an adaptive radiation in placental mammal evolution. However, the affinities of most Paleocene mammals have remained unresolved, despite significant advances in understanding the relationships of the extant orders, hindering efforts to reconstruct robustly the origin and early evolution of placental mammals. Here we present the largest cladistic analysis of Paleocene placentals to date, from a data matrix including 177 taxa (130 of which are Palaeogene) and 680 morphological characters. We improve the resolution of the relationships of several enigmatic Paleocene clades, including families of ‘condylarths’. Protungulatum is resolved as a stem eutherian, meaning that no crown-placental mammal unambiguously pre-dates the Cretaceous–Palaeogene boundary. Our results support an Atlantogenata–Boreoeutheria split at the root of crown Placentalia, the presence of phenacodontids as closest relatives of Perissodactyla, the validity of Euungulata, and the placement of Arctocyonidae close to Carnivora. Periptychidae and Pantodonta are resolved as sister taxa, Leptictida and Cimolestidae are found to be stem eutherians, and Hyopsodontidae is highly polyphyletic. -

Furthermore, it is not uncommon for paleontologists to propose hypothesis of ancient environments based on a few Anura fossils. However, this approach is problematic and more robust inferences must be supported by a set of evidences with the same importance. We thus stress some important parameters to adequate the use of Anura as a paleoenvironmental indicator. Firstly, a taxonomical analysis must support the affinity of a fossil with a specific taxon, and then the ecological and climatic limitations over its closest living relatives need to be used as a parameter to infer the paleoenvironment. Secondly, as geologically younger the fossil than the paleoenvironment inference will be more reliable, due to the transient nature of species diversification to new habitats. But even those assumptions should be treated with caution because some closely related species are not distributed in areas which share similar environmental conditions. In addition, some species present higher tolerance to environmental variations (eurytopic) than others (stenotopic), making a fossil included in a mostly eurytopic group as less valuable as paleoenvironmental indicator. Thirdly and last, the solely use of Anura fossil as the principally evidence to hypothesize a paleoenvironment is discouraged. Paleopalinological data, geological data, paleofaunal data and other data’s sources should also be used in combination to propose a sounder hypothesis. -

Susana BARGO1 and Gerardo DE IULIIS3 Abstract. Cingulata -armadillos, pampatheres and glyptodonts- are among the most representative of South American Cenozoic mammalian groups. Their dental anatomy is characterised by homodonty, hypselodonty, and the absence of enamel in almost all known species. It has been proposed that these peculiarities are related to a primitive adaptation to insectivory and that they represent a strong phylogenetic constraint that restricted, or at least conditioned, adaptations toward other ali- mentary habits. However, the great diversity of forms recorded suggests a number of adaptive possibilities that range from specialised myrmecophagous species to carrion-eaters or predators among the animalivorous, and from selective browsers to bulk grazers among herbivores, as well as omnivores. Whereas armadillos (Dasypodidae) developed varied habits, mostly an- imalivorous but also including omnivores and herbivores, pampatheres (Pampatheriidae) and glyptodonts (Glyptodontidae) were herbivores. Morphofunctional and biomechanical studies have permitted a review of previous hypotheses based solely on comparative morphology. While in some cases these were refuted (carnivory in peltephiline armadillos), they were corrob- orated (carnivory in armadillos of the genus Macroeuphractus;
