Sisterhood’s Opening Meeting andSisterhood Brunch Free for Paid-Up Members of Sisterhood Sunday, September 10, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Through narration and costume, Natalie Pilcher Smith will tell the story of the life of Henrietta Szold. Before “community organizing” had a name, there was Henrietta Szold, the rabbi’s daughter, who broke with the traditional role of women to become a champion of Jewish engagement. Her tenacity and courage played a vital role in the expansion of social services, medical services and the founding of the state of Israel. Henrietta Szold grew up amidst a rich union of European, Jewish, and American traditions. Her parents, Benjamin and Sophie Schaar Szold, emigrated from Hungary in 1859 so that Benjamin could become the rabbi of Baltimore’s congregation Oheb Shalom. Born the following year, Henrietta, the oldest of five sisters, became her father’s most prized student. He shared with her his love and knowledge of the texts and traditions of the Jewish people as well as his determination to create an updated form of Judaism that could be respectful of both the past and the present. The cost for this Paid-up Membership Brunch is payment of your Sisterhood dues for the coming year. You must RSVP by Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Jewish Stories, Holiday cycle, signs and symbols provide a jumping off point for students to flex their creative muscles. Through a variety of hands-on activities, creating a comic series, writing a blog, designing a video game, leaners experience being Jewish. Their particular strengths, interests and individual voices emerge naturally through visual art, music and role play. The study will culminate with a final project to demonstrate deeper knowledge of the materials covered. Cantor Karen Webber is the mother of two children with special needs and has extensive experience working with children with different learning styles. She has worked with children of all ages who have autism and ADHD. In the past she was awarded a grant which enabled her to develop several programs with students with different learning styles. She also tutored these students for their B'nai Mitzvot and created the right tools and resources for them to be successful.

Sarah Shapiro, LCSW-C I’m excited to be back for my second year as Beth El’s in-house social worker, providing short- term counseling to congregants, staff, school families and Soul Center participants for six hours each week. I am once again available to help Beth El community members address a variety of normal life cycle issues including, but not limited to, grief and loss, health and mental health concerns, and challenges with caregiving, parenting, employment and relationships. I will also continue to assist the clergy in reaching out to sick or recently bereaved congregants and to work on some program development initiatives. I will be onsite at Beth El usually on Tuesdays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. During these times, I am available to see people in person by previously scheduled appointment or on a walk-in basis as well as to provide telephone counseling and support. If one of these times is not convenient for your schedule, please still be in touch and we will find another time to connect. I can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 410-484-0411 ext. 1111. I look forward to providing support to the Beth El community once again this year. Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!
