With his "can do" spirit, his gentlemanly manner, and his calm demeanor, we know we can always count on Steve. Steve also is a regular at our morning minyan, over the last couple of years becoming one of our treasured ‘minyonnaires.’ Steve comes from a multigenerational Beth El family, and his long standing connection to the shul on multiple levels is the true mark of a devoted congregant. When he is not at Beth El, Steve manages to get in a few rounds of golf to keep his game sharp! He is a devoted husband to his wife Julie, father, son, friend, and congregant, and an inspiring example to all of us in terms of the meaning that synagogue can bring into our lives. Beverly Penn We’ve known around Beth El for a long time that when you really need to get something done, you can always call on Beverly Penn. Bev served the congregation as its 23rd president, and somehow since then has become even more active and engaged in congregational life! With her thoughtful and organized manner, her wisdom, her sage advice, and her leadership, Bev has been a driving force at Beth El for decades. She is currently serving as the number one person in the Beth El Gift Shop, helping that important arm of the synagogue to maintain its always excellent standards. The clergy, board members, and staff of Beth El know what a joy it is to work with Bev. Outside of the life she made with her husband Sam of blessed memory, and her deep love of family and friends, we know that a part of Bev’s heart and soul is always with Beth El. A true leader, Beverly Penn has helped to make Beth El what it is today, namely one of the country’s top synagogues.

Jack B. Coonin Memorial Fund A new fund has been started at Beth El in memory of Jack Coonin. It is called the Jack B. Coonin Memorial Fund. Jack Barry Coonin passed away unexpectedly last December. Jack was a hard working business owner, a dedicated family man, and a generous friend. Jack loved his job as a Real Estate Appraiser, traveling the entire state of Maryland and meeting new people from all walks of life. Jack had a way about him that invited people to talk to him and he was a great conversationalist. He was truly interested, caring, intelligent, and generous. Jack was married for 30 years to Myra and had two wonderful children, Sara and Josh. Jack became involved with Beth El, serving on the board for two years and being an active member of the Events Committee. He enjoyed planning social occasions and bringing people together; not only at the synagogue, but also at his home with Myra. Friends and acquaintances were always happy to receive an invitation from him. Jack is the son of Jean and Joel Coonin. He is survived by his wife, his two children, his sisters, Ellen Kroll and Marjorie Newmann, his sister-in-law, Susan Bruck, his brothers-in-law, Martin Kroll, Eli Neumann, and Eli Bruck, and many loving nieces and nephews. Please continue his memory by contributing to The Jack B. Coonin Memorial Fund to further support Beth El.
