Through course work and conversation, each member of my committee challenged me to expand my perspectives and push boundaries while forming this research project. Professors Hall and Benson opened new theoretical horizons to me and shed light on the complexities of persistent sociological concerns. Professor Holland conducted an independent readings course with me exploring art and politics that proved to be very influential in the development of my thinking about these issues. Professors Brekhus and Callahan offered insightful and often piercing questions about my work until the very end. Their engagement is much appreciated. I was very fortunate to be involved with a tremendous cohort of fellow students who were excited and energized by the prospects of pushing academic as well as personal boundaries through their intellectual efforts. The energy and sheer fun I derived from working with my fellow students sustained me through many difficult moments along the way. From the beginning I looked to Brent Myer as a model academic and teacher. I learned how to make a life in the academy in part from watching him. Brad Wing and Christine Patterson helped me develop a critical eye toward the relations of ruling that I have since found invaluable. David Lind served as my constant sounding board over many delicious beers. Through him I learned the true value of a good conversation partner for academic work. Trumpeter/flugelhorn master Chris Pasin, whose resume includes several years touring as a soloist with Buddy Rich and backing giants on the order of Sinatra, Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles and Tony Bennett, as well crafting his own projects with some of New York’s finest jazz players, has brought some Gotham friends together, along with upstate New York-based vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell (in a dual role as vocalist and producer), and given the holiday season the scintillating Baby It’s Cold Outside. For those more interested in new insights into seasonal warhorses, Pasin and friends offer a five-and-a- half-minute journey through “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” featuring discursive solos by Pasin on trumpet and pianist Armen Donelian, as well as a tasty drum-and-bass dialogue between Jeff Siegel and Ira Coleman, respectively, plus a couple of nice tempo changes for added texture. Similarly, “We Three Kings of Orient Are” is almost unrecognizable when Pasin soars into upper register impressionistic flurries before giving way to Donelian skittering across the keys and taking the melody line into uncharted waters over the course of six-and-a-half minutes.

Guest vocalists on the album include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius, Ann McCrary and Julie Miller. Rounding out the band are Dennis Crouch on bass and Jay Bellerose on drums. The Majestic Silver Strings and the album’s guests are among the most well respected and in-demand current musicians. Making a record of this caliber was a dream and took luck of scheduling to make come true. A bonus DVD with concert footage of the first, and only performance to date with Buddy, Marc, Bill and Greg playing the tracks selected for this project, will be included with the CD. The musicians re-interpret classic country songs written by some of the most esteemed songwriters including Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller and George Jones, whose hit “Why Baby Why” is sung by Buddy on the record. The band also tackles a few traditional compositions and several new songs including “God’s Wing’d Horse” written by Julie Miller and Bill Frisell. Many projects boast one guest vocalist; Buddy has six revered friends lending their voices to the recording including Emmylou Harris on “Why I’m Walkin’” and Lee Ann Womack on “Meds.” Buddy also does a duet of “I Want To Be With You Always” with Patty Griffin.
