Here, we aimed to investigate cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the SLB. Ten cyanobacteria isolates were identified as Microcystis genus based on16S rDNA analysis. All isolates harbored microcystin genes, while five of them carried saxitoxin genes. On day 15 of culturing, the specific growth rate and Chl-a content were 0.2–0.3 per day and 4 µg/mL. 1 Final Report Identify Critical Fish Habitats in the Mekong River, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand Prepared by Mr. Boonsong Sricharoendham Ms. Suthida Soebeen Ms. Parichat Musikatham Ms. Siriwan Suksri Department of Fisheries, Thailand, December 2015 2 Executive summary The study on identify critical fish habitats in the Mekong River, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand (activity 2.2.1) is an activity under the project of Transboundary Fisheries Management in the Bordering Provinces of Bokeo, Lao PDR, and Chiang Rai, Thailand. The objectives are; 1) to identify critical habitats for spawning, nursing and refuge during dry season, 2) to discuss the relevance of these habitats for recruitment capacity of fish stocks and 3) to explore ideas for conservation of these habitats and implications for local and transboundary fisheries management. All data collection and field surveys were conducted at the four target villages and their monitoring sites nearby during June 2014 to October 2015. The 4 target villages composted of; 1) Ban Don Tee, Ban Muang Kan, 3) Ban Pak Ing Tai and 4) Ban Huai Luek where covered the distance of Mekong mainstream about 80-90 km long. PRA study and LEK expert interview were applied in the village with local communities and fisher expert. Also dominant fish gonad development and fish larvae sampling were also investigated in those area. The result found that the Mekong mainstream in Chiang Rai province located at the middle part of the total Mekong river length where about 400 m above mean sea level and 2,200 to 2,300 km far from the river headwater. -

It provides an overview of the BDP formulation, together with information about the planning process and its knowledge base, tools and routines. The library incorporates the essence of more than a hundred technical reports, working papers and other documents. It consists of 15 volumes: 1 The BDP planning process 2 Sub-area analysis and transboundary planning 3 Sub-area studies (including 13 sub – volumes) 4 Scenarios for strategic planning 5 Stakeholder participation 6 Data system and knowledge base 7 MRCS Decision Support Framework (DSF) and BDP applications 8 Economic valuation of water resources (RAM applications) 9 Social and environmental issues and assessments (SIA, SEA) 10 IWRM strategy for the Lower Mekong Basin 11 Monographs. The work was done from 2002 to 2005, and some information may already have been superseded by new developments and new knowledge. -

Known earthy–musty odour producers, Lyngbya sp., Phormidium sp., Anabaena sp. and Oscillatoria sp., were found as the dominant genera of cyanobacteria in the lake water. Odour-producing Streptomyces spp. were also found to be significantly present in the lake sediment where majority of Streptomyces spp. (63%) isolated were geosmin-producers. The significant density of actinomycetes, particularly Streptomyces, suggests that they played as important contributor to the production of geosmin and MIB in the lake. Teak Logging in a Trans-Boundary Watershed: an Historical Case Study of the Ing River Basin in Northern Thailand
TEAK LOGGING IN A TRANS-BOUNDARY WATERSHED: AN HISTORICAL CASE STUDY OF THE ING RIVER BASIN IN NORTHERN THAILAND Suphawat Laohachaiboon and Shinya Takeda Abstract This paper explores the circumstances of teak logging from 1909 to 1924 around the Ing River, in the Mekong watershed. Teak logging in the Ing forests was not a simple phenomenon occurring in a geopolitical vacuum. First, teak logging practices were made possible by the French control of French Indochina, including part of the right bank of the Mekong River, which Siam had ceded to France in 1904. Second, the actual logging operations in this region depended upon the geographical location of the Mekong River. That is, teak logs from the Ing forests could only be transported via the river, which crosses the borders of Siam and French Indochina. Introduction This paper examines the circumstances of teak logging from 1909 to 1924 around the Ing River, a tributary of the Mekong River, to understand the conditions that restricted and facilitated the logging operations in the trans-boundary area. The plentiful supplies of teak (Tectona grandis) in Southeast Asian countries such as Burma, Indonesia, and Thailand were a magnet for European colonists (Hurst 1990, 245; Peluso et al. 1995, 196). Patterns of teak logging in these countries were influenced to a large extent by German and British scientific forestry, which called for all forest areas to be mapped, enumerated, demarcated, and preserved (Vandergeest 1996, 160-1). However, teak logging in Thailand was exceptional, in that it was practiced not only in the Chao Phraya, the domestic watershed, but also in the watersheds of the Mekong and the Salween, the so-called “international rivers” of today (Figure 1). -

The roles of SIC are 1) work as a secretariat team of PCIR. SIC provides all supports for implementation and improvement of PCIR, 2) SIC is a platform for cooperation of the members and with other stakeholders, and 3) implement other SIC’s activities, such as conducting research, organizing a press release.
