Mr. Anthony and Ms. Vivio. Grace Bibbo and Adrian Romero as Ms. Wasson and Coach David. 1993 After five long-awaited years, the Mar ian Crusaders gained a victorious Home coming game. Though the Christian Patri ots were formidable opponents, the Cru saders literally ran over them. With the score (Patriots 7 and Crusaders 0) in the first quarter, the Marian Crusaders got fired up and took the lead without ever relinquishing it again. With the final score (Crusaders 46 and Patriots 31 ), Marian gained yet another victory. As the halftime show was concerned,it was one which no one could ever forget. Right after the second quarter, the Marian Leaders and Tall Flags Team took the turf. The size of their squad did not reflect upon their performance, for it was one of immense proportions. And ''Yess'' it is true, Yessinia Martinez took the crown to become the 64th Homcorning Queen in Marian's history. All events of this day can be summed up in two words: "We Won!" 9 Moonlight by the bay and the stars above . . . October 12, 1993 was the night to hold on to. The Officer's Club at the Marine Corps Re cruiting Depot (M.C.R.D.) was just right for our lively Homecoming Dance. Every body had a great time danc ing or helping themselves to the horsd'oeuvres table. Wh en JaBari Brown (B.M.O.C.) and Yessenia Martinez (Homecoming Queen) took the dance floor, they were soon joined by the rest of the court and slow danced to ''Hold on to the Night.'' It was the perfect scene. The memories of that night would surely be re membered.

iO 11 Once more, Marian held its annual spirit week. This was the time in which the entire school demonstrated its enthusiasm. Many individuals were willing to discard their fashion sense (and dignity) and dress a little below their normal standards. The adminis tration also made sure this was not a period in which the school was being evaluated by the district. Spirit week served to kick off the traditional homecoming event. This included the spirit rally, game, and dance. Both the teachers and students joined the excitement. Everyone was caught up in the fun as they competed to see who would go to the farthest extreme to show their spirit.

12 Spirit Week was a time for students to show their spirit by dressing up in a way that was far fromtheir true iden tity. Marian stu dents attended school as babies, as twins, and as hip pies. They came in their pajamas and in their school colors, blue and gold, to show their Marian pride.

Spirit Leaders

e came back better than ever! It Wwas the Spirit Leaders '93-'94. Not only did we have a cheer squad but also a flag and dance team. Our Crusader spirit just rock.in' the house at rallies and sporting events. Behind us all was our "mother spirit leader," Ms. Vivio. With her guidance and discipline we were de termined to reach our greatest potential. Being captain of the cheer squad has taught me leadership and responsibility. This was the best of the three years I cheered for Marian. My most embarrass ing moment was when I was swinging on the goal posts and I fell on my back and showed my rear end to everyone! I en joyed cheerleading and I hope to pursue it in my future. I love you, Spirit Leaders '93-'94. -Captain Tina Quillope

Flag Team

he Flag Team worked hard since last TJune to try to make it the best team Marina has ever had. Even though we only had six members, we strived our best to accomplish our goals. After attending USA camp at U.C.S.C., we won many group and individual awards. We not only gained discipline and experience, we gained five new friends. -Janice Chang Kelly San Martin

18 Sweethearts "94" was held at the Mariott Suites. The atmosphere was charged with fun. Even teachers chaperoning could not resist dancing. A table of scrumptious food stretched alongside a wall. No one could resist a break from dancing to pick some up. The dance was attend ed by 80 students, who saved this priceless mem ory by taking portraits.

This year's senior retreat provided the seniors with an opportunity to reflect upon their last four years here at Marian. The retreat was also a time for the seniors to reflect upon their relationships with God and the challenges they face after this year. Fun was a big part of the retreat! We realized our own giftedness as a community, in prayer, worship, and in fun activities that al lowed us to celebrate life. The seniors were directly involved in the planning of the retreat. The themes centered on friendship, community, prayer, reconcilia tion, and worship. -Mr. Duffy

The senior retreat at Camp Stevens was the highlight of our spir itual journey at Marian. -Lucero Mejia

The moderators of the senior retreat were Mr. Duffy and Mrs. Gorsich, whom we thank for making the retreat such a memorable experience. -The Seniors

imber up, flex those cerebral Lmuscles, get ready for a workout! Ac ademics at Marian are a challenge, and strengthen us mentally, to reach our goals in edu cation. There is something for eve ryone in the range of courses at Mari an, from Honors classes and litera ture workshops, to extracurricular op portunities to use our talents in Jour nalism, Drama, and Foreign Language. Academic achieve ments of Marian students were acknowledged by Mrs. Tellers at a school liturgy this year. Her words, ''You can be proud'' reminded us of whywe were here, and Our Lady of Wisdom at the entrance of school reminded us daily that at Marian we would have the support and inspiration we needed to succeed.

JaBari Brown gives Martin Munoz a piece of advice. The Gauntlet staff consults with yearbook company representative, Steve Bailey.

36 Cooperation came easily at Marian. The difference is the environment and faculty. With fewer students here at Marian, it has been easier to work together. Students felt that teachers were more involved in student activity and since our ratio of students to teachers is 4 to I, teachers had more time to work individually with their students. Ms. Vivio stated, "Students here are cooperative to work with and I really enjoy the effort they put out.'' It all boiled down to the atmosphere of the school. Students felt that at Marian we were one big family and we were not bodies in a crowd. That is what gave students the cooperation and teamwork they needed to succeed.

"We are a family here at Marian. Everyone knows everyone else and we are willing to help each other in good and bad times." JaBari Brown

37 When asked what keeps him teaching, Mr. Gorsich said, "The basic hope that I will help the students learn the information they need, and using my efforts to help them grow as people.'' Teachers dedicated a great amount of time going through the endless process of grading papers, putting to gether lesson plans, and guiding students into making the right decision. Each teacher at Marian contributed their time in helping students make their goals possible to complete. No matter how hard the material was, teachers were always there to encourage us. When asked what was the most satisfying thing about teaching, Mrs. McGregor said, "Knowing I'm making an investment in the future." One of the new teachers here at Marian, Ms. Vivio, spoke of, "the untangible rewards students give teachers when they catch on.'' All in all, dedication is a combination of hard work, cooperation, and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Stephanie Schmitt asks Mr. Napolean for help.

''I like a teacher that makes the class interesting so that I actually want to learn and a teacher who has control over the class.'' Indira Guevara.

40 I TEEN STRESS

There's a dreaded plague that hits high school students all over the world. The symptoms of this terrible plague are you don't eat, you get hyper, you get neck problems, you get tired and under pressure all the time. The name of this plague that is sweeping the nation is "TEEN STRESS" (TS). A student I interviewed (anon ymous) has A.P. Government,A.P. English, A.P. Spanish, A.P. Spanish, A.P. Calculus, and A.P. Physics for classes. Now this can be a serious cause of TS. Even if you do not have these classes you can still get TS. The unbelievable amounts of homework, extracurricular activities, and a normal social life is really hard to handle for a teenager of the '90s. College is on the minds of a lot of high school students and can also cause a great deal of TS. As suggested by some students here at Marian Catholic High School, a good way to deal with TS is to relax, listen to music, sleep, or just go with the flow.

Serguei Chtchetinkine finds the senior lawn a relaxing place to study.

''Going to a junior college never crossed my mind. Going to a 4 year university would prepare me for the opportunities of going into the real world." Sha-Ron Jones

41 Throughout the 93' -94' school year. Marian students were enthused to do their best. Teachers got the students involved in activities and class discussions. They were a big part of the enthusiasm at Marian. Sherman Simbulan stated, "The characters of the teachers make a school interesting." Stu dents worked with the teachers and gave a helping hand in creating an atmosphere we all enjoyed here at Marian. Enthusiasm was a great part of our education.

44 Bubble, Bubble, Crash, Boom, Bang!! That was the sound of Science at work. Labs and formulas introduced us to different sides of the science world. Many students were either dissecting animals in Biology and Anatomy class, mixing chemicals together in Chemistry or learning about motion in Physics class. Exploration of new things helped students to discover that there was always a different way to do everyday things. Many students used microscopes in science class to come in close contact with what a real organism looked like. When asked what was the most interesting thing in Physics, Sher man Simbulan commented, "The multiple hands-on labs." Exploration helped these young individ uals to understand that science was always a means to discover something old and new.

49 Marian fo otball this year was at its finest. The Varsity team ventured to Japan, becoming the first American High School to play a football game in Japan. "This was one of the most in teresting experiences of my life', said Brian Guillermo. Thirty six Crusaders courageously went to this unknown country with only one thing in mind: VICTORY. But they came back to America with so much more. Facing off in the afternoon heat of Japan, Marian came out on top of the Yokota Panthers. The final score came out to be 26-8. Both the offensive and de fensive squads of the Crusader team dominated the field. The trip to Tokyo turned out to be a very memorable learning experience. After an in tense footballpractice in the morning, the play ers were given the chance to explore the sights and culture of Japan. Riding in jam-packed sub ways, eating Japanese food, walkingthrough the busy streets of Tokyo, and being in the middle Rel of a typhoon are only some of the experiences 9B1 Making that would never be forgotten. The players were able to experience the hospitality of the Japa nese culture. No player could ever forget the twelve-hour plane rides to and from the United States. Most importantly, the win at Yokota will always be remembered. tJ tr. t>i;

This year the girls' tennis team un derwent a rebuilding year. Their line up was dominated by inexperienced underclassmen who were taught the es sential fundamentals by Coach Jere miah. Their record did not demonstrate the hard work and the spirit that the girls possessed. What was important though, was that they enjoyed them selves while learning. "Playing tennis was a lot of fun,'' said Cecilia Romero. Her sentiments were echoed among all the other players.

89 Associated Student Body Striving to increase the Marian Catholic High School spirit and creating lasting memories, this year's 1993-94 Associated Student Body carefully organized their eve ry activity in time and with a little twist. The ASB was lead by President James McElwaine, Vice President JaBari Brown, Treasurer Kevin Cosgriff, and Secretary Kristina Quillope. ASB moderator, Ms. Kerry Wasson, guided this team of busy bodies. "They're a bunch of enthusiastic, driven, energetic peo ple.'' The goal this year was to help every one at Marian to be aware of its many ac tivities. This incredible group of students are the ones who made many of the campus activities possible. With the help of the other Commission ers, the 1993-94 Associated Student Body was a great success. Their dedication, by all standards, was admirable.

91 Ambassadors The Ambassadors gave Marian an im age that students looked forward to fol lowing. They set aside the time to tour grade school students, teachers, and par ents on our campus and enable them to learn a little about Marian's principles. With the combined help of the student body and the Ambassadors, recruiting was a great success. Mr. Napoleon said, ''Re cruiting the Saint Charles students was a memorable experience.'' He was enthused about meeting potential Crusaders. Dan iela MacFarland, chairman of the group, stated, ''Keeping up with the duties were challenging, however the results were worth the dedication and effort.''

Even though the Asian-Pacific Islander Club was off to a slow start, once they got reassembled, they picked up where they left off lastyear. Under the head of a new mod erator, James Duffy, the club was a great success. President Audrey Nery, Vice Presi dent Tina Quillope, Treasurer Florence Ec scudero, and Secretary Theresa Villarosa helped organize meetings and various food sales that helped promote the Asian-Pacific culture. This young group also had the chance to attend several Asian-Pacific semi nars that made more familiar with their an cestors. The Asian-Pacific Islander Club was most famous for their "Lumpia sales" dur ing lunch. Their main purpose was to edu cate the student body on the different Asian-Pacific cultures and traditions. Involvement in clubs has reached an all time high this year at Marian. Students seemed to be very excited about participat ing in clubs. One club in particular that was on its way up was the Black Student Union. In only its second year of existence at Marian, the club has more than doubled its number of members. Their presence on campus has been much more noticeable than last year. Under the Moderator, Chris Cornick, the club planned many activities. Sheryl Braswell, President of B.S.U. said, "We had many activities planned for this year such as a few fund raisers and a gum bo sale.''

95 Mecha is an organization dedicated to ed ucate the students about the Hispanic cul ture. The club was opened students to the Hispanic culture and to the significance of their celebrations and delicious foods. The club members launched many new ideas and raised a significant amount of money during the school year. Monca Martinez, President, said, "We did not only raise money for our club, but we took the time to educate ourselves of our ancestors and de scendants." One of Mecha's most unique ideas was to build a little monument on the campus in remembrance of the Class of 1994. ''I see the future monument as a pos itive and reinforcing project for the school. This year I saw how much progress they've made with just a little dedication," said moderator, Phil Lusardi. Mecha gave students a chance to unit other students and share different cultures. 96 Cultural What six? Germany, Russia, Latvia, Spain, and Hong Kong? Talk about culture crossover: This year Marian plugged into the Global Community. It all began when Mrs. Tellers spoke with Mr. Vic Thury, President of the ECI (Educa tional Consultants International), about em barking on a cultural exchange program that would link Marian Catholic High School with the rest of the world. The possibility rapidly became reality, a reality that was in full-swing when we began the 1993-1994 school year. Jean Panno, the Assistant Prin ciples (Student and Faculty Services) coor dinated the program. One of the program's main goals was to have the exchange stu dents improve their English Language Skills. 97 Yearbook This year's theme, "Going Our Way" perfectly de scribed the atmosphere here at Marian. With many new events such as a JV Football Harbor League Title and a newly painted campus, the theme was very easy to relate to. Everything was Going Our Way: A very positive way. The 1993-94 Gauntlet staff was headed by a new advi ser, Carolyn Jensen. She brought many new and bright ideas that helped make the yearbook very successful. Busi ness managers, Johanna Fregoso and Carlos ltuarte made fundraising more exciting and enjoyable. They organized several bake sales and field trips that readies much-needed funds. Chief Editors, Audrey Nery and Yessenia Martinez made sure that layouts were drawn correctly and deadlines were met. The staff members were very dedicated to the work that needed to be done. Whether is meant working eight hours on Halloween, stopping in at lunch, or coming in after school, someone was always willing to cooperate and help out. Teamwork, self confidence and motivation, and pa tience were the key words to the yearbook's success. Au drey Nery commented, "I never realized how much work the editor had to do until I took the position, but overall it was worth the extra effort." 99 STR IVE "I smell cheesecake," said Grace Bibbo, ''Mrs. Gabbard's home-style cheesecakes.'' What is STRIVE really? STRIVE is more than just bakesales, birthday cards and par ties. It is an organization that promotes self awareness and self-development. Striving to Realize the Individuality and Value in Every one. This is what STRIVE actually stands for. Mrs. Mary Gabbard, STRIVE moderator, has dedicated her never-ending guidance and patience to keep this club alive. Over the past years, STRIVE has brought many activities that involved most of the stu dent body. This is why STRIVE is most like ly the hardest and biggest working club on the Marian Campus. Every year the students were warned of the dangers of drugs and al cohol with signs and rallies. This year was different. 107 Young Republicans

Never before had political groups been allowed to operate on campus, but tradition was broken, and the Teenage Republicans are here! Though the club started late in the year, they were still able to surpass every one's expectations. Many more people joined than were expected. In fact, they succeeded so well in stirring up partisan involvement, that an opposition group, ge Democrats, was started as a result of the Republi can's actions. But what, you may ask, is it that these Teenage Republicans do? The entire thrust of the Teenage republicans is basi cally threefold. The first is to bring teenagers into the republican party to provide an opportunity for them to find political expression and recognition. The second is to foster and encourage activities of the Republican party and to promote its ideas. The third is to analyze and discuss information concerning political affairs and philosophy. The most integral part of the group is en suring that all members, as the future voters, are in formed of both sides of the modem-day political issues. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages dnd ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
