Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

Prior to activation of the Floodway, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) deployed self-contained stage sensors throughout the Floodway to capture the change in water elevation through time at various Upcoming ASCE Events locations. Daily streamflow measurements were made upstream of the Mississippi-Ohio River confluence, within the Floodway opening, and on the January 15 Mississippi River downstream of the Floodway opening. Additionally, velocity and ASCE Monthly Luncheon bathymetric data were collected downstream of the Floodway to characterize scour. January 28 Bio ASCE YMG Meeting Robert (Bob) Holmes, PhD, P.E., D.WRE serves as the National Flood Hazard Alpha Brewing Co. Specialist and Coordinator for the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). Additionally he holds academic appointments in Civil Engineering at the Missouri University of February 3 Science and Technology, and the University of Illinois. Dr. Holmes serves as lead Site Characterization Practices flood scientist for USGS operational and scientific endeavors nationwide. -

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier). -

English for Creative Industry, Faculty of Letters, Petra Christian University, Siwalankerto 121-131, Surabaya 60236, East Java, INDONESIA Emails: [email protected] Abstract: This thesis deals with the anxieties experienced by the leaders of superhero teams in Civil War II, Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Through their anxieties in Civil War II, I tried to reveal the causes of their anxieties and their ways to reduce these uneasy feelings. To analyze the causes of these two characters’ anxieties, I used two of the theory of anxiety, reality and moral anxiety. I found that there are two causes that make Iron Man feel anxieties which are the reaction of Captain Marvel towards Ulysses’ prophecies and his responsibility both as a superhero and as a leader to protect people from the outcome of Ulysses’ prophecies. On the other hand, Captain Marvel also feels anxieties from the blame of Iron Man and her responsibility both as a superhero and as a public officer to protect people from dystopian future. Iron Man uses two defense mechanisms, which are splitting and rationalization. On the other hand, Captain Marvel also uses two defense mechanism, which are idealization and rationalization. These defense mechanisms are used by both, Iron Man and Captain Marvel to ease their reality and moral anxiety. Key words: Reality anxiety, Moral anxiety, Splitting, Idealization, Rationalization. -

DeVine Congressional Oversight In Brief Analyst in Intelligence and National Security Since the mid-1970s, Congress’s oversight of the Intelligence Community (IC) has been a fundamental component of ensuring that the IC’s seventeen diverse elements are held accountable for the effectiveness of their programs supporting United States national security. This has been especially true for covert action and clandestine intelligence activities because of their significant risk of compromise and potential long-term impact on U.S. foreign relations. Yet, by their very nature, these and other intelligence programs and activities are classified and shielded from the public. Congressional oversight of intelligence, therefore, is unlike its oversight of more transparent government activities with a broad public following. In the case of the Intelligence Community, congressional oversight is one of the few means by which the public can have confidence that intelligence activities are being conducted effectively, legally, and in line with American values. Covert action is defined in statute (50 U.S.C. §3093(e)) as “an activity or activities of the United States Government to influence political, economic, or military conditions abroad, where it is intended that the role of the United States Government will not be apparent or acknowledged publicly.” When informed of covert actions through Presidential findings prior to their execution—as is most often the case—Congress has a number of options: to provide additional unbiased perspective on how these activities can best support U.S. -

In 1879 Congress created the Mississippi River Commission (MRC) to develop and coordinate federal flood control policy for the Lower Mississippi River. Through 1927, that Commission clung stubbornly to a "levees-only" policy that was based on the mistaken belief that levees alone could be effective in controlling the flood waters of the Mississippi River. When the levees failed--and they occasionally did--the MRC responded by raising and strengthening the system but refused to adopt a more comprehensive program, one which would include outlets and reservoirs. Finally, a disastrous flood in 1927 forced the abandonment of levees-only and the adoption of a comprehensive plan for the Lower Mississippi River. -

Richard Stevens ([email protected]), University of Colorado at Boulder Dr. Christopher Bell ([email protected]), University of Colorado at Boulder Abstract: The election of 2008 proved a significant moment for the role of popular culture in political decision-making, particularly for comic books. As Jewett and Lawrence have observed, the American Monomyth is an influential narrative for activating attitudes of justice, dealing with cultural threats and establishing social norms. However, the American Monomyth appears to be exclusively masculine in structure, perhaps explaining why there is more support for a minority “hero” in the American psyche than for a female. This paper reviews 283 portrayals of sitting American presidents in American comic books and analyzes the differences between those portrayals, the portrayals of Barack Obama and John McCain, and the portrayals of Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama. While most U.S. public official portrayals emphasize the public office (and often as dependent upon super-powered intervention), Obama and McCain actually take on characteristics of the superhero archetype. In particular, the “origin stories” of McCain and Obama presented in the IDW and Antarctic Press biographies make use of the classic superhero trope, while similar comic depictions of the female public figures struggled to fit the established conventions of the genre. The researchers consider similarities between the birth of the superhero archetype during the Great Depression and the 2008 economic meltdown to consider the environment that produced the superhero associations, and consider the potential ramifications in electorate expectations for the superheroic framing of America’s commander-in-chief, as well as its inability to transfer superheroic traits to female figures. -
