Established in 1981, School Sport Australia is responsible for the development and promotion of school sport in Australia. Each year school sport representative opportunities are provided for over 6,000 students. State and Territory school sport bodies work collaboratively and have accepted responsibility for implementing School Sport Australia programs, assisting in policy development and providing, through their individual state/territory networks, the maximum number of opportunities for students to participate in the broadest possible range of sporting activities. School sport is offered at district, regional, state and interstate level and each year, hundreds of thousands of Australian students are provided with participation opportunities. Approved international programs and the Pacific School Games are features of the national school sport calendar. International competitions planned during 2017 include Football, Hockey, Netball and Water Polo, plus schools representing School Sport Australia will be invited to participate at International School Sport Federation competitions in Athletics and Tennis. Interstate sporting competitions provide opportunities for students to participate in sport at the highest level. These Championships are an integral part of the School Sport Australia program, not only for their sporting benefits, but also for the immense educational, cultural and social benefits they provide for the participants. I extend to all students my best wishes in their pursuit of selection for their State or Territory team and wish them an enjoyable and rewarding experience as they pursue their personal goals in this particular sporting endeavour. Representing a State or Territory is an achievement of which you can feel very proud. I hope that all competitors, team officials, organisers and supporters associated with this Championship derive satisfaction and fulfilment from their involvement. In closing, I wish to acknowledge and thank School Sport Victoria, Tennis Australia, Tennis Victoria, the Championship officials and all of the officials from the competing States and Territories for their contribution in ensuring the success of the Championship. Graeme Jennings President School Sport Australia SSA Tennis (Jack Pizzey Cup) Championships 2017 - Page 2 Welcome from School Sport Victoria On behalf of School Sport Victoria, I extend a very warm welcome to all students, teachers, team officials and parents to the 2017 School Sport Australia Pizzey Cup Tennis Championships. It is Victoria’s privilege to host such a prestigious event and I am grateful to the Organising Committee for their expertise and time in the planning already undertaken to ensure SSV run a quality competition. I would also like to acknowledge the coaches, managers and officials, as well as staff from each state in their School Sport units, for their cooperation and professional attitude towards the staging of this event. I extend my congratulations to the students who have been selected to represent their State or Territory and acknowledge that you wear your uniforms with pride. Your selection reflects dedication and commitment to the sport not only from you personally but also the support you have received from your teachers, coaches and family. I hope that the coming week of competition is rewarding for you; not only to exhibit and develop your skills and teamwork, but to enable you to continue or develop new friendships. The aims of School Sport Australia, which SSV will foster during this event, are to ensure that students develop athletically, socially and educationally from their involvement in school sport. Remembering this, I hope that all participants will enjoy themselves and achieve the team and personal goals you have set yourselves. I also hope that within the busy competition schedule you will have time to sample some of the many attractions that Shepparton has to offer. I wish all participants an enjoyable and memorable week. Jude Maguire Chief Executive Officer School Sport Victoria SSA Tennis (Jack Pizzey Cup) Championships 2017 - Page 3 Welcome from the National Secretary On behalf of School Sport Australia I would like to welcome all students participating in the 2017 J.C.A. Pizzey Cup and Tennis Australia Cup. Congratulations to you all on representing your State/Territory at this important and prestigious tennis event. The Pizzey Cup was inaugurated in 1963 with the trophy being donated by the then Queensland Minister of Education, Mr Jack Pizzey. From 1938 to 1963 the Bruce Cup was competed for in an under 15 years event. With the start of the Pizzey Cup, the Bruce Cup became the trophy to be competed for by primary aged school students. Both events have added considerably over the years to the long and proud history of Australian tennis with some of Australia’s finest tennis players, coaches and officials commencing their careers at these two tournaments. It is one of the outstanding features of School Sport Australia Championships that representatives from across Australia are able to compete on a regular basis despite the vast distances involved. I am certain that the great traditions of school sport will be maintained throughout this event. I acknowledge the continuing support by Tennis Australia of this event. The support of Tennis Australia is instrumental to the success of this event. This year gold Australian Ranking points will be awarded for all Tennis Australia Cup matches. To the School Sport Victoria team lead by Ian Landy goes my appreciation for their effort and skill in organising this event. To the Shepparton Tennis Club thank you for hosting this year’s event. I’m sure everyone involved will enjoy your warm hospitality, great facilities and fabulous grass courts. To the team managers go my sincere thanks for their continued support, loyalty and friendship. Their contribution is considerable in making this School Sport Australia activity the successful and enjoyable learning experience for students it has been for many years. I trust that all matches will be played in the true spirit of sportsmanship, and as the competition progresses, new and valuable friendships will be made. I know that your time in Shepparton will be rewarding, and you will return home with fond memories of your participation in the 2017 J.C.A. Pizzey Cup and Tennis Australia Cup. Graeme Waight National Tennis Secretary SSA Tennis (Jack Pizzey Cup) Championships 2017 - Page 4 Welcome from Tennis Australia On behalf of Tennis Australia, we would like to welcome you to Shepparton for the 2017 Pizzey Cup. Congratulations on being selected to represent your state/territory and we hope you enjoy the experience of participating in this great event. Tennis Australia is once again delighted to provide support to this long running secondary school event, and would like to thank School Sport Australia and national tennis secretary Graeme Waight for their efforts in making the Pizzey Cup the fantastic event that it is. Tennis Australia and School Sport Australia have a long and proud association with the Pizzey Cup – a tournament that was first contested nationally in 1978. The honour board of previous Pizzey Cup competitors is a who’s who of Australian tennis. Former greats such as Ken Rosewall, John Alexander and Evonne Cawley, and more recently Wally Masur, Mark Woodforde, Richard Fromberg, Patrick Rafter, Sam Stosur, Casey Dellacqua, James Duckworth and Jordan Thompson (to mention just a few) have all enjoyed the opportunity to represent their states. In tennis we are committed to developing young Australians in both their sporting and educational endeavours and see the Pizzey Cup as an integral part of this development. Along with this, the Pizzey Cup also provides a unique opportunity to forge new friendships and to have memorable cultural experiences. For some of you it will be your first opportunity playing state/territory representative team tennis. For others it presents an opportunity to capitalise on quality match-play opportunities as you look towards future national and international tennis success. To all competitors, whatever your goals, we wish you all the very best in a memorable week of fun and exciting competitive tennis. Paul Cammack Director of Participation Tennis Australia SSA Tennis (Jack Pizzey Cup) Championships 2017 - Page 5 Welcome from Tennis Victoria On behalf of the Tennis Victoria Board of Directors and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome all competitors and supporters to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club for the 54th staging of the Pizzey Cup tennis event. • The Ayes Have It: the History of the Queensland Parliament, 1957–1989
    7. The Pizzey–Chalk interlude, 1968 With the retirement of Frank Nicklin as Premier in January 1968, the Queensland Parliament entered a period of turbulence and uncertainty. Nicklin had been the leader of the Country Party continuously since June 1941, accumulating a total of 26.5 years at the helm. He had been Premier for 10.5 years and had governed the state competently and conscientiously. He had stamped his own personal integrity and probity on the character of the government and had quietly maintained a guiding hand over the cabinet and party room. In the Parliament, he was uniformly held in high regard not only by his own Country Party colleagues but by his Coalition partners and members of the opposition. He had maintained a sense of decency in the Assembly that was recognised by friend and foe alike. At the time of his retirement, Nicklin had attained many parliamentary achievements, not the least of which was the general acceptance of the Coalition parties as the natural parties of government. He had also, perhaps more conscientiously, sustained the Country Party as the dominant party in the Coalition despite consistently polling fewer votes than the largely urban-based Liberal Party. Nicklin’s retirement at seventy-two years of age was not exactly a surprise; it had been expected for some time. His health and energy were waning and he had spent some weeks in hospital during the final months of his record- breaking premiership. It was widely believed that Nicklin had hung on to the job for so long simply to beat the previous record of Labor’s Forgan Smith as the longest-serving premier (Forgan Smith had served 10 years and three months).

  • Privilege in Tennis and Lawn Tennis: the Geelong and Royal South Yarra Examples but Not Forgetting the Story of the Farmer’S Wrist
PRIVILEGE IN TENNIS AND LAWN TENNIS: THE GEELONG AND ROYAL SOUTH YARRA EXAMPLES BUT NOT FORGETTING THE STORY OF THE FARMER’S WRIST GRAEME KINROSS SMITH DEAKIN UNIVERSITY I It is the season. That strange game called lawn tennis in- filtrated the Australian colonies in the mid 1870s when the wealthy, in emulation of English cousins, rigged nets in their city gardens or in the grounds of their country estates and invited long skirted ladies and men in cummerbunds, white shirts, and formal ties to tennis parties. The flight of the balls over nets five feet or more from the ground was demure and accompanied by giggles, gasps and gentlemanly shouts. By the 188Os, those whose enjoyment of these physical dashes required for its satisfaction something more codified in the way of a game were beginning to establish clubs for players of like mind. Their endeavours were guided by the All England Croquet Club at Wimbledon which had incorporated the words Lawn Tennis in-its title, in 1877,and which staged its first Gentlemen's Singles Championship under rules which modified those of the modern game's inventor,Major Wingfield, and allowed for a net still five feet high at the posts,a rectangular court rather than Wingfield's hour glass, and the modern system of scoring. That all occurred about a century ago. So it is the season- for celebrating the birth of the game, for taking stock, for writing the centenary histories of Australia's earliest tennis clubs. In 1878, the Melbourne Cricket Club added an asphalt court and a tennis club as an adjunct to cricket, and laid a grass court in 1880.

  • The History of the Queensland Parliament, 1957–1989
14 . The demise of the Coalition and the Nationals governing alone, 1981–1983 In 1980, backroom plans had been already entertained for a stand-alone National Party government supplemented by a few Liberal ‘ministerialists’— opportunists who would cross over and side with whatever the next ministry turned out to be in order to remain part of the next government. Historically, ‘ministerialists’ were typically senior parliamentarians who, forgoing party loyalties, decided to collaborate as individuals in the formulation of a new government. After the 1980 election, however, any such musing was put on hold as the two conservative parties lapsed back into coalition. This time, the Nationals clearly imposed their dominance, taking the prime portfolios and consigning the ‘leftovers’ to the Liberals. Labor began to refer to the junior partners as ‘Dr Edwards and his shattered Liberal team’—the losers who were ‘now completely the captive of the National Party’ (QPD 1981:vol. 283, p. 7). Despite his vitriolic attacks against the Premier and the National-led government, Llew Edwards retained his position as Deputy Premier and Treasurer—positions he would keep until he was deposed by Terry White on the eve of the Coalition collapse in August 1983, although there was an unsuccessful attempt by dissident Liberals to remove Edwards in November 1981. When the Premier learned about the dissident Liberal plan to topple Edwards, with Angus Innes taking the lead, he declared Innes an ‘anti-coalitionist’ and someone with whom he would not work. Instead, Bjelke-Petersen began hatching plans to form a minority government with whomsoever among the Liberals who would give him support; and then to govern alone until mid-1982.
