Purpose of event For 27 years, the St. Louis Arts Awards has honored the people, organizations and corporate citizens that craft, create and nurture the arts in the St. Louis region. This year, the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis’ (A&E) signature, sell-out event will once again shine the spotlight on St. Louis' best and brightest on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. Attended by nearly 700 arts patrons, and with a goal of raising over $460,000 in gross revenue, the Arts Awards recognize and celebrate the honorees' impressive impact on their communities.

A&E requests that the Staenberg Family Foundation renew its support for this important and prestigious event with a commitment of $3,000 - for which Staenberg Family Foundation will be recognized as a Table Sponsor in all earned and paid media, paid advertisements, Arts Awards publications, stage video scroll, etc. A&E welcomes the Staenberg Family Foundation to this group of distinguished community patrons of A&E's single, largest fundraising event. The 2017 St. Louis Arts Awards was a resounding success - and the A&E board, staff and event volunteers are dedicated to ensuring the 2018 event exceeds all expectations.

A&E is proud to announce the 2018 Honorees for the event: Johnetta Haley, Music Educator, Lifetime Achievement in the Arts; Dennis M. Reagan, , Lifetime Achievement in the Arts; Gene Dobbs Bradford, St. Louis, Excellence in the Arts; Keith Tyrone Williams, Grand Center Arts Academy, Art Educator of the Year; Saint Louis Fashion Fund, Arts Startup of the Year; Art on the Square, Arts Collaboration; World Wide Technology, Inc., Corporate Support of the Arts. Most notably, the Staenberg Family’s support of Gene and Jazz St. Louis as their founding sponsor of JazzU.

The 2018 St. Louis Arts Awards proceeds augment A&E's core mission program which provides critical financial, professional development, collaboration and accelerator services to nearly 70 arts and arts education organizations each year - especially during this tenuous time of government funding. Proceeds from the event will be granted out by the end of the 2nd quarter of 2018. To date, A&E has provided over $105 million in grants to organizations of all sizes throughout the 16-county bi- state region - including Illinois - since 1963. Those organizations, in turn, keep the St. Louis region vibrant and provide access to a wide and diverse variety of performances, workshops and exhibits for over 1.7 million children and adults.

Page 2 SFF Event Sponsorship Application

Who is your targeted audience? The true targeted audience is the 1.7 million children and adults for whom the event proceeds benefit. A&E was founded in 1963 to acknowledge a disparity in the way arts organizations were being financially supported in comparison to social service, education, health and environmental sectors. A&E supports organizations that provide arts and arts education access to diverse audiences. With a long-term objective of ensuring an enriching and vibrant arts community for all, A&E has committed to funding organizations whose performances, exhibits and educational programs affect every demographic, reaching people of all ages and ethnicity, including those in economically under-served areas. For A&E, arts education and outreach are especially important aspects of any arts organization and are prerequisites for funding.

In 2016, A&E awarded grants that enabled over 1.7 million children and adults to attend an exhibit or performance. Grant funded outreach programs, such as art classes and workshops, reached nearly 300,000 individuals while 80% of programs offered by A&E funding organizations reaching and impacting at-risk and special needs audiences. A&E funds organizations throughout a 16-county, bi-state service area which covers urban, suburban, and rural communities, including St. Louis city; the counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis, Warren and Washington; and the Illinois counties of Bond, Calhoun, Clinton, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair.

The arts are our region's greatest assets. By providing essential funding for organizations that host programs, workshops, and performances, A&E improves the quality of life for people in the region. What is your expected attendance? The St. Louis Arts Awards is the only event that brings together arts lovers and community leaders from across all disciplines, organizations, and corporations under one roof. The entire bi-state region of the St. Louis Area is welcome. The target of invitations are on past supporters, those connected to honorees with little exposure/access to the arts and their many walks of life, civic leaders, and constituents of A&E grantee organizations.

A&E expects another sell-out crowd approaching 700 this January. Co- chairs for the event are Susan Block and John Russell; presenting sponsor is Centene Corporation; Principal Sponsor is Edward Jones; Gift Sponsor is Ameren; Honoree Sponsors are PNC and Monsanto; and Host Committee members are Dr. Tim and Mrs. Kim Eberlein, etc. Anticipated renewal sponsorships are from World Wide Technology and Steward Family Foundation (Entertainment Sponsor); Emerson (Principal Sponsor); Ken and Nancy Kranzberg (Honoree Sponsor) and many more.

The invitation for the 2018 event will be designed this fall and sent this November. Attached is last year’s invitation for reference. Please attach your invitation 2017 AA Invitation FINAL.pdf Please attach sponsorship opportunities 2018 Arts Awards eBrochure 8.23.17.pdf

About the 2018 St. Louis Arts Awards Every January, more than 600 St. Louisans escape the dark, dreary slush of winter and pack the Khorassan Ballroom at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel to celebrate the people and organizations that make our community so vibrant. Whether it’s their first time at the St. Louis Arts Awards or they’ve been going every year since its start in 1992, the audiences leave with chills down their spines – not from the winter temperatures, but from the talent and artistry of their fellow St. Louisans. The Arts and Education Council’s St. Louis Arts Awards is the only event that brings together arts lovers from across all disciplines, organizations and corporations under one roof. It is an elegant evening of cocktails and dinner, an awards presentation and awe-inspiring performances – all packed into just four hours. (Hollywood awards shows could learn a thing or two from us.) Proceeds from the evening benefit the Arts and Education Council’s annual campaign, which provides support to more than 70 arts and arts education organizations throughout 16 counties in the bi-state region. The 2018 St. Louis Arts Awards Honorees Each year, the St. Louis Arts Awards recognizes seven artists, educators, philanthropists, corporate citizens and arts organizations for their contributions to St. Louis’s ever-growing artistic community. gnes Wilcox, former artistic director of Prison Performing Arts, directed plays and taught poetry in Missouri prisons for more than 25 years. A Wilcox explains that as a teenager, her mother once took her to a women’s prison. “Everybody looked like me,” she recalls. “I can’t tell you what it means at age 17 to have privilege illustrated in that way. I knew I would never be in prison because of my family and my circumstances. That seemed very unfair.” In discussing her work with inmates over the years at four Missouri prisons, Wilcox says what stands out “is the joy that seeing and participating in theater gives to a human being, whether he or she is an equity actor or a prison inmate. We all need outlets for the creativity that is part of every human being.” “I find that theater is a very powerful motivator, whether you’re getting your GED or learning how to read,” she adds. “Theater can enchant you into doing things you might not necessarily plan to do.” Wilcox says she is thrilled to be receiving tonight’s Lifetime Achievement Award, though her first thought was, “Oh my goodness, I must be old.” She refused to tell her age, half-heartedly joking, “I’m an actor. Actors never tell their age.” Wilcox taught at Webster University and Washington University in St. Louis in the early 1980s, and by the 1990s she was artistic director of The New Theatre (TNT) in St. Louis. At TNT she directed 21 new and contemporary plays and produced for 13 seasons. Prison Performing Arts began as a project within TNT, and grew to become an independent organization in 1999. In 2010 and 2012, Wilcox developed and directed two museum-theater performances with former inmates and homeless veterans for the , “Staging Old Masters” and “Staging Reflections of the Buddha.” Her production of “Hamlet” with high-security inmates was featured on NPR’s “This American Life” with Ira Glass. Wilcox retired in March of 2015 after 22 years at Prison Performing Arts. In retirement, she will travel and spend time with her husband of 45 years, Bob Wilcox, a theater critic and college professor, though trips might have to come in between her projects. She is currently working on a young adult novel and has hopes of producing another museum project with former prisoners Prison inmates performing The Tempest with and homeless veterans in 2017. elen Baer would say that the arts define a culture,” explains Pat Stark, trustee of “ the Arthur & Helen Baer Charitable Foundation. “She’d tell you that if you can get children at an early age interested in the arts – be it visual arts, performing arts,H music, dance – it can set a course for positive development for the rest of their life.” Although the Arthur & Helen Baer Charitable Foundation was officially established by Helen Baer in the early 1980s, its roots go further back. Her husband, Arthur Baer, was the CEO of Stix Baer & Fuller retail department store (originally called the Grand Leader) before it was sold in the late 1960s. Arthur was a brilliant businessman, a futurist and a generous benefactor to the St. Louis community. He wrote a $250,000 check in 1954, which funded the original Nine Network building on the Washington University campus as he saw the possibilities of using television for education. Arthur also purchased the Campbell House and made it available to the St. Louis community when it was on the verge of being demolished. Arthur passed away in 1969 and left Helen with the task of continuing his charitable activities. Her passion was to deliver arts education to children. When Helen died in 1993, she left $2.5 million to the charitable foundation to be used for St. Louis community betterment projects and arts education programs to help underserved children. Since then, the Foundation has disbursed $8.5 million to various nonprofits, including the Saint Louis Art Museum, Nine Network, COCA, Arts and Education Council, St. Louis University Art Museum, Jazz St. Louis’ JazzU Program, Craft Alliance Center of Art & Design, Art St. Louis and Friends of Kids with Cancer art therapy programs at St. John’s Mercy Kids Cancer Center and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “Both Helen and Arthur would be very proud of being named a recipient of this award, and the fact the charitable foundation has made an imprint on so many St. Louis arts organizations,” says Stark. “Our goal has always been to find an organization where our funding is going to make a difference to that organization or our funding will allow an organization to say, ‘the Baer Foundation is behind us,’ which in turn will encourage other foundations and donors to offer their support.”

87681_Arts Awards Program.indd 9 1/21/16 3:14 PM Art Educator of the Year Doug Erwin

oug Erwin has been a fine arts educator for the past 25 years. Currently, Erwin teaches acting at McCluer High School, where he has served as the Director of Theater for Dthe past 14 years, building the largest high school African-American theater program in Missouri. Alumni from McCluer’s theater program have earned over $1 million in theater scholarships since Erwin has led the program. Erwin also performs in professional musical theater, including Stray Dog Theatre, Insight Theatre Company, Center Stage Theatre, The Alpha Players and Midwest Lyric Opera. For the past five years, Erwin also has served as the K-12 Fine Arts Content Leader for the Ferguson-Florissant School District, supervising 23 schools. He is currently completing a doctorate in fine arts education at Lindenwood University, holds an educational specialist degree in educational administration from Lindenwood, and has a master of arts in theater education and a bachelor’s in speech and theater from Truman State University. For his dissertation research, Erwin has looked at the importance of arts education for young students, “which shows a huge correlation between high performance on standardized test and participation in fine arts.” “That’s one of the big things people don’t realize,” he says. “It’s not just the kids who are amazingly gifted. It’s the participation in the arts, and it doesn’t matter what the arts discipline is.” Erwin was one of 20 educators and two fine arts educators selected to represent Missouri over the 11-year duration of the Japan Memorial Fulbright Program. As a result, Erwin is the only American to have studied Karuda (a form of Japanese Theatre). He is also co-founder and chair of the Fine Arts Regional Consortium; directed the first Ferguson-Florissant “All District Musical” featuring over 300 students from 23 schools; and directed “Ferguson’s Children: Our Voice,” a production featuring over 400 children in grades K-12 featuring vocal and instrumental music, theater, dance and visual art in response to the community unrest in Ferguson. Recently, Erwin has partnered with Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri-St Louis to create student theater works based on Theatre of the Oppressed. Erwin is currently the district representative and sponsor to the Student Summit on Race sponsored by Education Plus. As Art Educator of the Year, Erwin said the honor was “humbling,” and added: “I feel like now I have to increase the quality and caliber of everything I am doing. It raises the stakes. Not that I was coasting before but I feel like I have to represent all of the arts teachers in the St. Louis region by being a role model as well as an ambassador for the arts.”

he Bach Society of Saint Louis’s Arts Award comes in the same year the organization is celebrating its 75th anniversary as the oldest continuous chorus in the St. Louis area. T“Receiving this award is a huge honor for us and especially poignant given that it is our 75th season,” says Melissa Payton, executive director of the Bach Society and principal singer in the Bach Society Chorus. Founded in 1941, its mission is to “provide stimulating and enriching musical and educational experiences for audiences and performers in the tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach.” The Bach Society Chorus includes many of the finest voices in the St. Louis region, supported by a core of paid professional singers. The Bach Society Orchestra consists of all professional instrumentalists, including members of the St. Louis Symphony. Soloists are engaged from across the country and are recognized for their artistry in the performance of 18th Century music. Payton explains that the Bach Society not only performs music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, regarded by some as perhaps the world’s greatest composer of all time, but also features music inspired by Bach. She maintains that with the plethora of singing and a cappella shows on television, choral music is undergoing a resurgence, with more young people auditioning for the Bach Society and attending performances. “Our chorus is becoming younger and younger,” Payton says. “We recently had a big reunion concert where 65 singers joined us for our fall concert. The alumni said they were excited about how much youth we have in the organization [now].” On the subject of youth, the Bach Society is committed to educating young people through its music education programs. These include: Giving Bach to St. Louis Youth – a mentorship and scholarship program for high school students; Young Artists Awards, a scholarship program for students under the age of 30; and Encore, side-by-side rehearsals with a local college or university choir. In addition, the Bach Society organizes benefit concerts to contribute to groups such as the American Red Cross and Assistance League of St. Louis; provides free concert tickets to children in the underserved community; gives free lectures and presentations to students and other community groups all over the St. Louis region; spearheads an online choral calendar at STLSings.org; and collaborates with local arts groups including Dance St. Louis, Cathedral Concerts and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

lorida A&M University music scholars, Dwayne and Dwight Bosman are composers, arrangers, jazz artists and music educators. F St. Louis natives, the twins’ passion for jazz started at an early age when their father, Lloyd Smith, exposed them to jazz greats such Earl “Fatha” Hines, The Bosman Twins Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Smith, a well-known businessman, performed as a side man in Basie’s and Ellington’s orchestras. Paula V. Smith, the twin’s mother and the first African-American administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor under the Reagan Administration, was also an avid jazz lover. Influenced by famous musicians, like family friend Louis Armstrong, as well as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, the twins began performing professionally as The Bosman Twins by age 14. The two play virtually every woodwind instrument available, including a range of clarinets, saxophones and flutes. Over the years, the Bosman Twins have shared their love of music and the stage with entertainment legends Freddie Cole, Branford Marsalis, Fontella Bass, Roy Ayers, David Peaston and the late trumpeter, Lester Bowie. Recipients of the Harmon How to Listen and the Missouri Folk Art grants, in addition to numerous other awards, they are particularly proud of being presented with a St. Louis Arts Award. “This award means a lot to us because, in a sense, we are being honored by the people who are our peers,” says Dwight. “The Arts and Education Council has given this award to so many prestigious and notable people who have done so much good for the arts in St. Louis. We are honored and humbled to be included.” The twins have traveled across the country in their roles as music directors and champions of youth music education. Dwayne is the former Music Director at Crossroads College Preparatory School in St. Louis. Dwight, band director and music educator for more than 30 years, is now retired from the St. Louis Public School District. “Educating youth about music is of the utmost importance to us,” says Dwight. “These youngsters are the musicians of tomorrow. Whether they are amateur or semi-pro or become professional musicians, having a love and appreciation for music opens up their world. Even if they do not become professional musicians, the exposure may help them to become patrons of the arts.” In April 2015, The Bosman Twins released their first album of original music, entitled “When Lions Roar.” The twins have two more original albums planned in the near future. r. Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris grew up loving the arts. As a small child, she accompanied her father, a self-taught artist, to the Saint Louis Art Museum, where he would set upD an easel and paint reproductions of the great masterpieces. “I was an only child for seven years and I remember spending a lot of my weekends as a small girl there with him,” she says. As it turns out, not only did the art museum make an indelible impression on Lewis- Harris, but she also became a trailblazer there as its first African-American college intern, art educator and curator. “I get a lot of joy from art,” says Lewis-Harris, whose work in visual arts has been as a printmaker and photographer as well as an arts administrator, curator and teacher. “Art is about expression, especially nowadays,” she says. “There is so much bad news out there people don’t know how to react. The arts are there, I believe, to see the best part of human beings and humanity. They bring out the best in us.” Today, Lewis-Harris is the Director of the Connecting Human Origin and Cultural Diversity program at University of Missouri-St. Louis. She currently holds the title of associate professor in both Anthropology and at the College of Education. Lewis-Harris has her master’s and doctorate degrees in anthropology from Washington University. In her former position as assistant curator at the Saint Louis Art Museum, she curated several exhibits, including: Art of Papua New Guinea; : The Migration Series; Masterpieces of Central Africa; and the reinstallation of the museum’s Pacific galleries. Lewis-Harris has advised and curated exhibits with many regional art institutions and groups including Art Galleries, St. Louis Artist Guild, Gallery Visio, Venus Envy, The Schmidt Gallery, Altart, Belas Artes Gallery, The St. Louis Outsider Art Fair and the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She currently consults for national and international museums and galleries as an independent curator. She has also published numerous articles and catalogs on Pacific and African-American art and culture in relation to identity, art and contemporary society. In her position at the Center for Human Origin and Cultural Diversity at UMSL, she has integrated her past roles of educator, writer, artist, anthropologist and curator to address the important issues of cultural diversity, social segregation and the exhibit and presentation of minority cultures. She has given workshops and lectures to diverse audiences, from Pacific museum directors to rural agricultural advisors from Missouri and Illinois. Lewis-Harris is also on the board of the Ferguson Youth Initiative, which serves young people between the ages of 13 and 19, offering various programs to help enrich their lives as well as getting them involved in the future of Ferguson and the greater St. Louis community.

87681_Arts Awards Program.indd 13 1/21/16 3:14 PM Champions of the Arts Dr. Tim and Kim Eberlein

n 1998, Dr. Tim Eberlein and his wife Kim relocated to St. Louis from Boston, when Tim joined the faculty at Washington University in St.I Louis. He is currently Bixby Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and Director of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center. Until the move, Kim had been involved in healthcare administration. While she has done some consulting work in St. Louis in the field of public health, she has put much of her energy into the arts. She first joined the board of the Community Music School of Webster University, followed by the boards of the St. Louis Symphony, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, St. Louis University Library Associates, and the Friends Board of the Saint Louis Art Museum. Together, she and her husband support many arts organizations financially, and have chaired fundraising events for the St. Louis Symphony, the Black Rep, the Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Kim was instrumental in re-launching the St. Louis Visionary Awards in 2015 and has served as a panelist for the Regional Arts Commission. In both cases, her purpose in getting involved was to recognize and support the variety of individual artists and arts organizations that are thriving here. “I think we have a very robust arts scene in St. Louis,” says Kim. “It is truly exceptional for a city this size. That was really a wonderful discovery once we got here. And there is no doubt that in the 18 or so years that we have lived here, the arts have just become stronger.” The Eberleins are enthusiastic fans of the arts and love to invite others to performances. In particular, they enjoy introducing young professionals to opera and symphony, and have used the strong arts culture of St. Louis as a recruiting tool to bring literally hundreds of faculty here. “We feel if you live in a community, giving to the arts is important because they add so much meaning and enjoyment and enhance the quality of life,” says Kim. “We also like how they bring people together who might not otherwise be in the same room. [The arts] are a community connector.” One unique opportunity the Eberleins have had to work together on is Sing for Siteman, now in its seventh year. This concert features singers in town performing in the Opera Theatre season sharing their talents for one evening to raise funds for cancer research. “Our patients at Siteman depend on the arts for hope and healing,” said Tim. “There is no more uplifting sensation than to hear music, of all genres, throughout the atrium and lobby at Siteman, thanks to our many volunteer musicians.” Symphony musicians perform at Siteman Cancer Center as part of the Siteman Cares program

About the Award am Stang was born in Northfield, Minnesota in 1959. He attended Washington University in St. Louis from 1980 – 84 and was a student of Fritz DreisbachS at Penland School of Crafts in 1983 and of Lino Tagliapietra at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Sam was a founding partner of Ibex Glass Studio (1985 through 1991) and started Augusta Glass Studio in Augusta, Mo., in 1992, which he still operates as a sole proprietorship. “All of my pieces are made by using traditional European glassblowing techniques. With the murrini pieces, I begin by making glass rods which are patterned in cross section. The rods are cooled and cut into thin pieces and arranged on an iron plate which is then heated to fuse the murrini. This is then rolled into a tube on the end of a blowpipe and shaped into the final form. Every piece I make is entirely produced hot at the furnace. The banded bowls are blown as separate sections and fused together. This technique, known as incalmo, requires a great deal of skill and cooperation. I work with at least one assistant and often with a team of three experienced glassblowers.”
