Rangers FC v FC Internazionale Milano PRESS KIT Ibrox, Glasgow Tuesday, 6 December 2005 - 20:45 CET Group H - Matchday 6 With FC Internazionale Milano safely confirmed as UEFA Champions League Group H winners, the focus is firmly on Rangers FC as they look to make home advantage count on Matchday 6. A win would make certain of second place in the group, regardless of the result in the other game, and see the Glasgow club go forward with the Nerazzurri to the competition's knockout stages. Last meeting •Rangers' only defeat in the group stage so far came on 28 September in Milan when Inter's David Pizarro scored the only goal of the game. A win and three draws from their other matches to date has kept the Scottish champions in contention to progress. Rangers hold key •While Rangers, with six points, are in the driving seat to take second place and will at worst go into the UEFA Cup Round of 32, Artmedia (five) and Porto (four) are not out of it. •A Rangers win on Matchday 6 would confirm that Artmedia and Porto's meeting is only about who clinches the UEFA Cup place on offer for third place. Similarly, a draw in Bratislava, would also confirm Rangers in second regardless of their result against Inter. •However, a win for Inter could allow either Artmedia or Porto to leapfrog Rangers with a victory of their own. If there is a draw in Glasgow, then only Artmedia can profit with victory as three points for Porto would still not take them above Rangers. Previous encounters •Prior to the Matchday 2 encounter, it had been 21 years since the clubs met in UEFA club competition. In the 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round, Inter took a three-goal advantage after their first leg at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium thanks to goals from Antonio Sabato, substitute Franco Causio and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. •In the return match at Ibrox, David Mitchell scored after five minutes but Alessandro Altobelli equalised ten minutes later. Rangers recovered well, with Iain Ferguson scoring twice to give Inter the tie by 4-3 on aggregate after several uncomfortable moments. •That tie had mirrored the first, and other, encounter between the clubs in the 1964/65 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals. Inter won the first leg at home 3-1 after gaining a 3-0 lead within 51 minutes with goals from Joaquín Peiró (2) and Luis Suárez. •However, James Forrest's goal after 64 minutes gave Rangers a degree of hope, and when Forrest narrowed the margin even further after just six minutes of the return leg, there seemed time for more goals. But the Inter defence held firm, and the Italian side went on to beat SL Benfica in the final. uefa.com 1/40 Rangers FC v FC Internazionale Milano PRESS KIT First Italian test •Rangers first played host to a team from Italy in the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round when AC Milan won 4-1 at Ibrox. The Rossoneri then won the second leg 2-0. Heaviest home defeat •Rangers' heaviest home defeat by a Serie A club came when Juventus won 4-0 in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage. European final •Rangers have also lost a European final against Italian opposition. In the 1960 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, they were defeated 2-0 at home by AC Fiorentina before going down 2-1 in the return leg. Scottish strength •Inter have found every meeting with a Scottish club to be closely-contested. Celtic won the European Cup at Inter's expense in the 1966/67 season with a 2-1 win in the Lisbon final. And five years later, in the semi-finals of the 1971/72 competition, Inter were 5-4 winners on penalties against Celtic after the tie had finished goalless. Team facts: Rangers •Rangers are making their fifth appearance in the UEFA Champions League in seven seasons, aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the first time. •The Glasgow club have finished in third place in the group stage during three successive seasons from 1999/2000, thus resulting in a transfer to the UEFA Cup. Their best performance following elimination from the UEFA Champions League came in the 2001/02 season when they advanced to the UEFA Cup fourth round before losing 4-3 on aggregate to eventual winners, Feyenoord. •Rangers came within one stage of playing the 1959/60 European Champion Clubs' Cup final at Glasgow’s Hampden Park. Having defeated RSC Anderlecht, TJ Červená hviezda Bratislava and Sparta Rotterdam, Rangers advanced to the semifinals of the competition to face Eintracht Frankfurt. Although the sides shared two goals in the first half of the opening leg in Germany, with Eric Caldow on target from the penalty spot for Rangers, the home side scored five goals without reply in an impressive secondhalf display. It was to be similar at Ibrox in the return as Rangers again conceded six times in a 63 defeat with their consolation goals being provided by John McMillan (two) and David Wilson. • The Scottish side have competed in three UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals – winning the 1971/72 final 32 against FC Dinamo Moskva thanks to goals from Colin Stein (24) and William Johnston (40, 49). Their defeats came at the hands of AC Fiorentina (1960/61) and FC Bayern München (1966/67). • Rangers won their 51st Scottish championship in dramatic fashion in 2004/2005 prevailing from traditional Glasgow rivals Celtic FC by just one point. But Sotirios Kyrgiakos gave Rangers the points with a headed goal five minutes from time. • Rangers failed to build on that start on the Matchday 2, going down 10 to FC Internazionale Milano in a match played in an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium as part of Inter’s punishment for crowd misdemeanors last season. Inter made light of the eerie atmosphere and won courtesy of a deflected freekick from Chilean midfielder David Pizarro after 49 minutes. Inter could even afford the luxury of Julio Cruz’s missed penalty, which struck the post after 25 minutes. • An inspired performance by Juraj Čobej frustrated Rangers and gave Artmedia a precious away point as the Slovakian champions held on for a goalless draw at Ibrox on Matchday 3. The 34yearold goalkeeper, who saved two penalties in the shootout against FK Partizan to book Artmedia's first appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage, produced a string of superb stops to deny Rangers their second win. • Rangers squandered a great opportunity to take a commanding position in their group, dominating against Artmedia in Bratislava but falling foul of their own poor finishing and defending. Nevertheless, a 22 draw leaves both sides firmly in contention to reach the knockout rounds. Dado Pršo got the Glasgow team off to a perfect start with a header in the third minute, but Artmedia captain Balázs Borbély levelled within five minutes. Steven Thompson restored the Scottish champions' lead with another header in the dying moments of the first half, before Ján Kozák salvaged a point after 59 minutes, firing the ball in after goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus had failed to clear his lines. • UEFA Champions League debutant Ross McCormack came off the bench to salvage a draw for Rangers on Matchday 5, cancelling out fellow newcomer Lisandro López's goal for dominant Porto in a onesided Group H encounter that ensures the Scottish champions European football after Christmas. It took McCormack just seven minutes to make his mark on the European stage after coming on as a 76thminute substitute to stab in from close range after Chris Burke's knockdown. Until then Porto looked to have hoisted themselves off the foot of the table thanks to Lisandro's header, scored on the hour. The Portuguese team had completely dominated and, in an amazing final flurry, Waterreus did incredibly well to deny Paulo Assunção. • In 237 matches to date in UEFA club competition, Rangers have won 106, drawn 52 and lost 79, with 381 goals scored and 302 conceded. • In the European Champion Clubs' Cup/UEFA Champions League, the Scottish side have played 132 times with 56 wins, 28 draws, 48 losses with 208 goals scored and 182 conceded. uefa.com 3/40 Rangers FC v FC Internazionale Milano PRESS KIT Team facts: Internazionale • Inter are competing in their fourth successive UEFA Champions League group stage.
