Ibrox, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 - 20:45 CET Group H - Matchday 6

With FC Internazionale Milano safely confirmed as UEFA Champions League Group H winners, the focus is firmly on Rangers FC as they look to make home advantage count on Matchday 6. A win would make certain of second place in the group, regardless of the result in the other game, and see the Glasgow club go forward with the Nerazzurri to the competition's knockout stages.

Last meeting •Rangers' only defeat in the group stage so far came on 28 September in Milan when Inter's David Pizarro scored the only goal of the game. A win and three draws from their other matches to date has kept the Scottish champions in contention to progress.

Rangers hold key •While Rangers, with six points, are in the driving seat to take second place and will at worst go into the UEFA Cup Round of 32, Artmedia (five) and Porto (four) are not out of it.

•A Rangers win on Matchday 6 would confirm that Artmedia and Porto's meeting is only about who clinches the UEFA Cup place on offer for third place. Similarly, a draw in Bratislava, would also confirm Rangers in second regardless of their result against Inter.

•However, a win for Inter could allow either Artmedia or Porto to leapfrog Rangers with a victory of their own. If there is a draw in Glasgow, then only Artmedia can profit with victory as three points for Porto would still not take them above Rangers. Previous encounters •Prior to the Matchday 2 encounter, it had been 21 years since the clubs met in UEFA club competition. In the 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round, Inter took a three-goal advantage after their first leg at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium thanks to goals from Antonio Sabato, substitute Franco Causio and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

•In the return match at Ibrox, David Mitchell scored after five minutes but Alessandro Altobelli equalised ten minutes later. Rangers recovered well, with Iain Ferguson scoring twice to give Inter the tie by 4-3 on aggregate after several uncomfortable moments. •That tie had mirrored the first, and other, encounter between the clubs in the 1964/65 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals. Inter won the first leg at home 3-1 after gaining a 3-0 lead within 51 minutes with goals from Joaquín Peiró (2) and Luis Suárez. •However, James Forrest's goal after 64 minutes gave Rangers a degree of hope, and when Forrest narrowed the margin even further after just six minutes of the return leg, there seemed time for more goals. But the Inter defence held firm, and the Italian side went on to beat SL Benfica in the final.

First Italian test •Rangers first played host to a team from Italy in the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round when AC Milan won 4-1 at Ibrox. The Rossoneri then won the second leg 2-0.

Heaviest home defeat •Rangers' heaviest home defeat by a club came when Juventus won 4-0 in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage. European final •Rangers have also lost a European final against Italian opposition. In the 1960 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, they were defeated 2-0 at home by AC Fiorentina before going down 2-1 in the return leg. Scottish strength •Inter have found every meeting with a Scottish club to be closely-contested. Celtic won the European Cup at Inter's expense in the 1966/67 season with a 2-1 win in the Lisbon final. And five years later, in the semi-finals of the 1971/72 competition, Inter were 5-4 winners on penalties against Celtic after the tie had finished goalless.

Team facts: Rangers •Rangers are making their fifth appearance in the UEFA Champions League in seven seasons, aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the first time. •The Glasgow club have finished in third place in the group stage during three successive seasons from 1999/2000, thus resulting in a transfer to the UEFA Cup. Their best performance following elimination from the UEFA Champions League came in the 2001/02 season when they advanced to the UEFA Cup fourth round before losing 4-3 on aggregate to eventual winners, Feyenoord. •Rangers came within one stage of playing the 1959/60 European Champion Clubs' Cup final at Glasgow’s . Having defeated RSC Anderlecht, TJ Červená hviezda Bratislava and Sparta Rotterdam, Rangers advanced to the semifinals of the competition to face Eintracht Frankfurt. Although the sides shared two goals in the first half of the opening leg in Germany, with Eric Caldow on target from the penalty spot for Rangers, the home side scored five goals without reply in an impressive secondhalf display. It was to be similar at Ibrox in the return as Rangers again conceded six times in a 63 defeat with their consolation goals being provided by John McMillan (two) and David Wilson. • The Scottish side have competed in three UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals – winning the 1971/72 final 32 against FC Dinamo Moskva thanks to goals from (24) and William Johnston (40, 49). Their defeats came at the hands of AC Fiorentina (1960/61) and FC Bayern München (1966/67). • Rangers won their 51st in dramatic fashion in 2004/2005 prevailing from traditional Glasgow rivals Celtic FC by just one point. Entering the

competition at the third qualifying round stage, Rangers defeated Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta FC 41 on aggregate to book their place in the group stage. • They began the group campaign with victory against 2003/04 competition winners FC Porto. Peter Løvenkrands and Dado Pršo had twice put the Scottish side ahead at Ibrox only for Porto to equalise twice through Pepe after 47 and 71 minutes. But Sotirios Kyrgiakos gave Rangers the points with a headed goal five minutes from time. • Rangers failed to build on that start on the Matchday 2, going down 10 to FC Internazionale Milano in a match played in an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium as part of Inter’s punishment for crowd misdemeanors last season. Inter made light of the eerie atmosphere and won courtesy of a deflected freekick from Chilean midfielder David Pizarro after 49 minutes. Inter could even afford the luxury of Julio Cruz’s missed penalty, which struck the post after 25 minutes. • An inspired performance by Juraj Čobej frustrated Rangers and gave Artmedia a precious away point as the Slovakian champions held on for a goalless draw at Ibrox on Matchday 3. The 34yearold goalkeeper, who saved two penalties in the shootout against FK Partizan to book Artmedia's first appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage, produced a string of superb stops to deny Rangers their second win.

• Rangers squandered a great opportunity to take a commanding position in their group, dominating against Artmedia in Bratislava but falling foul of their own poor finishing and defending. Nevertheless, a 22 draw leaves both sides firmly in contention to reach the knockout rounds. Dado Pršo got the Glasgow team off to a perfect start with a header in the third minute, but Artmedia captain Balázs Borbély levelled within five minutes. Steven Thompson restored the Scottish champions' lead with another header in the dying moments of the first half, before Ján Kozák salvaged a point after 59 minutes, firing the ball in after goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus had failed to clear his lines.

• UEFA Champions League debutant Ross McCormack came off the bench to salvage a draw for Rangers on Matchday 5, cancelling out fellow newcomer Lisandro López's goal for dominant Porto in a onesided Group H encounter that ensures the Scottish champions European football after Christmas. It took McCormack just seven minutes to make his mark on the European stage after coming on as a 76thminute substitute to stab in from close range after Chris Burke's knockdown. Until then Porto looked to have hoisted themselves off the foot of the table thanks to Lisandro's header, scored on the hour. The Portuguese team had completely dominated and, in an amazing final flurry, Waterreus did incredibly well to deny Paulo Assunção. • In 237 matches to date in UEFA club competition, Rangers have won 106, drawn 52 and lost 79, with 381 goals scored and 302 conceded. • In the European Champion Clubs' Cup/UEFA Champions League, the Scottish side have played 132 times with 56 wins, 28 draws, 48 losses with 208 goals scored and 182 conceded.

Team facts: Internazionale • Inter are competing in their fourth successive UEFA Champions League group stage. Inter have qualified for the knockout stages in two of the past three seasons, their best performance coming in the 2002/03 season when they advanced to the semifinal stage only to lose out on away goals to AC Milan. Last season Inter advanced to the quarter final stage only to see Milan block their route.

• Prior to the 2002/03 season, Inter's only other involvement in the UEFA Champions League came in the 1998/99 season when they reached the quarterfinal stage only to lose 31 on aggregate to eventual winners, Manchester United FC. • Since the UEFA Champions League started in the 1992/93 season, Inter have been more closely involved with the destiny of the UEFA Cup, playing in three finals and winning two of them. • They defeated SV Austria Salzburg 20 on aggregate in the 1993/94 season, but they lost 41 on penalties to FC Schalke 04 three years later after the two sides ended 11 on aggregate. However, Inter bounced back the following season to claim the trophy for the second time in four years by putting three goals past S.S. Lazio without reply with Iván Zamorano (5), Javier Zanetti (60) and Ronaldo (70) doing the damage. • Inter also won the UEFA Cup in the 1990/91 season when they defeated Lazio's cross city rivals, AS Roma, 21 on aggregate. They overcame a onegoal deficit following the opening leg in Italy’s capital to win 20 at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium thanks to goals from Lothar Matthäus (58pen) and Nicola Berti (67). • To date, Inter have won the European Champion Clubs' Cup on two occasions in four final appearances. The first came in the 1963/64 competition when Real Madrid CF were beaten 31 in Vienna. Sandro Mazzola scored in each half, either side of a goal from Aurelio Milani. Rafael Bautista scored for Madrid. • Inter finished in third position in last season's Italian Serie A, 14 points behind winners Juventus, and seven adrift of AC Milan. Udinese Calcio finished a further ten points behind in fourth.

• That earned them a place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, where they faced FC Shakhtar Donetsk. In the first leg in Ukraine, goals from Obafemi Martins (68) and Adriano (79) gave the Italian side a valuable away win. Álvaro Recoba (13) extended their lead in the return in Milan and Elano Blumer's 25thminute equaliser on the night was little more than a consolation. • Inter travelled to Slovakia on the opening matchday to face competition debutants FC Artmedia and a goal from Argentinian striker Julio Cruz after 17 minutes earned them a hardfought win. • Inter won by the same scoreline on Matchday 2 against Scottish champions Rangers FC. The match was played in an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium as Inter's punishment for crowd misdemeanors last season. However, the Italian side made light of the eerie

atmosphere and won courtesy of a deflected freekick from Chilean midfielder David Pizarro after 49 minutes. Inter could even afford the luxury of Julio Cruz's missed penalty, which struck the post after 25 minutes. • Inter lost for the first time in this season’s competition on Matchday 3 as FC Porto ran out 20 winners in Portugal. There was an element of fortune about both goals, but inspired by the brilliant Ricardo Quaresma, they outclassed their illustrious visitors. The Portuguese side had looked on the brink of elimination, but they are now back in the hunt for qualification, thanks to Marco Materazzi's own goal after 22 minutes and a Benni McCarthy volley 13 minutes later that deflected heavily off Juan Sebastián Verón.

• On Matchday 4, Inter's blushes were spared by two late goals from substitute Julio Cruz as they won 21 at an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium, leaving Porto to wonder how this game got away. The home side struggled to find any rhythm at all and it was not long before they were made to pay in the most spectacular fashion when, direct from a freekick 30 metres out, Hugo Almeida hit a thunderbolt that flew past Julio César into the top corner of the net. It was not until with 15 minutes remaining that Inter hit back. Porto captain Pedro Emanuel upended David Pizarro inside the penalty area and Cruz dispatched the resulting penalty with aplomb. He then added a second with an 82nd minute header from Sinisa Mihajlović's corner to provide victory.

• An Adriano hattrick on Matchday 5 helped Inter ease into the knockout stages as a clinical display earned an impressive victory at Artmedia's expense. The home side, whose starting eleven did not feature one Italian player, kicked off knowing victory would secure them first place in Group H, and took the lead midway through the first half through Luís Figo (28). Unbeaten in two previous away games in the section, Artmedia tried to rally but Adriano (41, 59 and 74) then took centre stage, doubling Inter's advantage shortly before halftime and scoring twice more in the second period to crown a memorable evening in Milan.

• Adriano also scored a hattrick last season for Inter in the UEFA Champions League in a 31 defeat of FC Porto in the second leg of their first knockout round tie which the Italian side won 42 on aggregate. Adriano's goals came after six, 63 and 87 minutes.

• Prior to Adriano's recent hattrick double, Christian Vieri (19, 34 and 71) scored three times for Inter on 6 December 2001 also at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in a 42 aggregate win at the expense of Ipswich Town FC in the UEFA Cup third round. Vieri's treble ended an eightyear wait for Inter fans to witness a hattrick in UEFA club competition as the previous threegoal haul by one player came from Dennis Bergkamp (13pen, 67 and 79) against UFC Rapid Bucuresti in the first round of the 1993/94 UEFA Cup a competition Inter won. • To date, Inter have played 45 matches in the UEFA Champions League winning 22, drawing 13 and losing ten with 70 goals scored and 51 conceded.

• In UEFA club competition, their overall record reads: played 267, won 132, drawn 72, lost 63 with 405 goals scored and 232 conceded.

AC Milan were beaten finalists (to Olympique de Marseille), while Club Brugge, PSV, Rangers FC and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle to enter the group stage.

• Defending champions Liverpool FC entered the competition at the first qualifying round stage having not secured one of the automatic qualification slots available for finishing in the top four places in last season's English Premiership, but they are not the only club to have played six matches to advance to the group stage a feat shared by FC Artmedia. Three clubs also made it from the second qualifying round: Rapid Wien, Anderlecht and FC Thun. • Both Arsenal and Schalke remain the only two clubs among this season's participants never to have played a UEFA Champions League qualifyinground match. Head coach profiles Alex McLeish Alex McLeish was one of the defensive rocks on which Sir built an Aberdeen FC side which broke the Rangers FC-Celtic FC stranglehold on Scottish football and became a European force in the 1980s. During his 17 years at Pittodrie, McLeish gained 77 international caps and represented Scotland at FIFA World Cups in 1982, 1986 and 1990. However, the pinnacle of his playing career came in 1983 when the Dons won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra-time victory against Real Madrid CF in Gothenburg. McLeish took his first step into management in 1994, replacing Tommy McLean at Motherwell FC and guiding the side to a second-place finish in his first season in charge. Four years later he joined Hibernian FC, and although his arrival came too late to prevent their relegation, McLeish led the capital club back to the Premier League the following year as First Division champions.

For a while it looked as though McLeish might join his mentor Ferguson as assistant at Manchester United FC, only to land the top job at Rangers FC in December 2001. Since replacing , McLeish has won seven domestic trophies, including titles in 2003 and 2005, and is now setting his sights on becoming the first manager to lead a Scottish club into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Roberto Mancini Roberto Mancini became FC Internazionale Milano's eleventh coach since 1995 on 7 July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with S.S. Lazio, and is already considered one of the most stylish and promising trainers in Italy despite his age. As a player Mancini made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1981 for Bologna FC, going on to play for Sampdoria UC, S.S. Lazio and Leicester City FC. He won two Italian first division titles (one each with Sampdoria and Lazio) six Coppa Italias (four with Sampdoria, two with Lazio) and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups (one with Sampdoria, one with Lazio). For the Italian national team, Mancini won 36 caps and scored four goals. He then started his coaching career as assistant to future England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at ACF Fiorentina in spring 2001. After leading Fiorentina to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. Inter saw the then 41-year-old as the man to end a Serie A title drought stretching back 16 years and for the second time, having done so when appointed at Lazio, Mancini replaced Zaccheroni. He immediately led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory, Inter's first domestic honour since that 1989 Scudetto, and is hoping to build on that platform this term in both Italy and the UEFA Champions League.

Name Nat. DoB UCL1 UEFA2 Konrad Plautz AUT 16.10.1964 16 40 Austrian referee Konrad Plautz, a regular on the UEFA Champions League scene as a member of UEFA's élite group of European match officials, is an enthusiastic director and actor with a local theatre group - the perfect antidote to his hectic schedule of domestic and European action.

A toolmaker from the small Alpine town of Navis, Plautz started taking charge of matches as a teenager in 1984. Starting with the youth sector, he began his rise through the ranks at regional level before heading into the Austrian national leagues - fulfilling an objective he had set himself at the outset of his career.

Plautz reached Austrian Bundesliga level after six years, before getting his FIFA international badge in 1996. That same year he was chosen to referee the UEFA European Under-16 Championship final in Vienna, in which a Portugal side featuring the likes of Nuno Gomes and Simão Sabrosa defeated a French side including Sébastien Frey, Anthony Réveillère and Steed Malbranque 1-0.

In 2004/05 he took charge of four UEFA Champions League matches, two UEFA Cup encounters and two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. He began the current campaign by taking charge of Real Betis Balompie's first game in the UEFA Champions League, a 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool FC.

Domestic news Artmedia draw strength from win (Saturday, 3 December 2005) FC Artmedia were in irresistible form in the build-up to Tuesday's decisive UEFA Champions League Group H fixtures, hitting seven past AŠK Inter Bratislava to send a stark warning to their Matchday 6 opponents, FC Porto. Elsewhere, the Portuguese side were held by Sporting Clube de Portugal, while Rangers FC also had to settle for a point in Scotland, after squandering a two-goal lead. The side they face in midweek, FC Internazionale Milano were also victorious.

FC Porto 1-1 Sporting Clube de Portugal Anderson Polga scored a second-half own-goal as Porto salvaged a share of the spoils against Sporting on Friday evening. With strikers Tomislav Šokota and Bruno Moraes still out due to long-term injuries, Porto coach Co Adriaanse handed Benni McCarthy a rare start, while Ricardo Costa came in for Bosingwa on the right side of the defence. And the shake-up almost reaped reward as Pepe and César Peixoto both squandered early chances.

But it was Sporting who broke the deadlock when Pepe's lacklustre pass was intercepted by Carlos Martins, who teed up for Brazilian striker Deivid to slot the ball home. Lisandro López had a header disallowed three minutes later, but Porto did find an equaliser on 65 minutes when César Peixoto's cross was deflected past the helpless Ricardo by defender Anderson Polga.

Adriaanse said: "Our equaliser was fortunate but we should have gone on to win. I'm not satisfied with the draw because we were the better team. We had several chances in the first half but couldn't score. Then we made one mistake and Sporting were ahead. Now we have another crucial game in Slovakia against Artmedia. We must win and hope that Inter beat Rangers in the other game. It's as simple as that."

Rangers FC 2-2 Falkirk FC

Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw by lowly Falkirk, after surrendering a two-goal lead at Ibrox on Saturday as pressure mounts on beleaguered manager Alex McLeish. The home side were seemingly cruising towards their first win in nine matches, leading 2-0 thanks to Peter Løvenkrands' second-half penalty and a Craig Ireland own goal. But two goals in two minutes from and Pedro Moutinho rescued a point for the visitors and consigned Rangers to a record-equalling worst run of results in the club's history. The result left Rangers fifth and manager McLeish livid, saying: "I'm angry and I understand the fans' frustration that we should surrender a two-goal lead. You can see there's some nerves in the team but you can also see the difference it made having one of our top players back with the introduction of Thomas Buffel." The Belgian international was back in the side following an eleven-game lay-off with a knee injury, and it was his cross that saw Ireland turn in for the opener. Løvenkrands

then slotted in from the penalty spot five minutes after the restart after Chris Burke had been brought down. But Falkirk staged a dramatic turnaround to leave Rangers without a win since October. FC Artmedia 7-1 AŠK Inter Bratislava Artmedia sent a chilling warning to their Slovakian Superleague rivals in the final round of matches before the winter break on Wednesday by overwhelming local rivals Inter 7-1 to go top of the table. Blažej Vaščák gave the home team the best of starts, breaking the deadlock inside the first 60 seconds after good work from Balázs Borbély.

Juraj Halenár and Borbély added further strikes before Branislav Fodrek made it 40 eight minutes before halftime. The midfield player made it five midway through the second half, and although the visitors reduced the deficit, Halenár and Ján Kozák both scored late on to give Artmedia a welltimed boost ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League deciders. Even more remarkable is that the win came without Ondrej Debnár and Aleš Urbánek, who were both rested, while Lukáš Hartig had a slight injury, and coach Vladimír Weiss was in upbeat mood. "I am delighted with my players – it's a good omen for our crucial UEFA Champions League game," he said. "In terms of attitude, they were fully concentrated. We offered a good performance and scored more goals as usual."

FC Internazionale Milano 10 Ascoli Calcio 1898 A fantastic freekick from Brazilian striker Adriano gave Inter a welldeserved 10 win against Ascoli at the San Siro on Saturday evening. The home side largely controlled the game and had many chances to add a second goal but failed to do so. Nevertheless Adriano's strike proved enough to secure maximum points against an Ascoli side that failed to pose a real threat to Inter's defence. Roberto Mancini's side are just two points behind secondplaced AC Milan.

Despite the victory Mancini expressed his disappointment with his side's finishing: "I am not happy with today's performance," he said. "We had ten or eleven chances to score a second goal and we failed with all of them. This is not acceptable at this level because we can not risk drawing this kind of match." Mancini could have called upon Kily González, who returned to training this week, but he has opted to ease him back into action. Pierre Womé and Santiago Solari are still sidelined with minor injuries while longterm absentee Zé Maria is also unavailable. Further injury concerns surround Alvaro Recoba who left the pitch after 27 minutes with a muscular injury.

The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for 17 March 2006. •Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.

Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.
