BMC Veterinary Research (2015) 11:175 DOI 10.1186/s12917-015-0463-0 CORRESPONDENCE Open Access International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force’s current understanding of idiopathic epilepsy of genetic or suspected genetic origin in purebred dogs Velia-Isabel Hülsmeyer1*, Andrea Fischer1, Paul J.J. Mandigers2, Luisa DeRisio3, Mette Berendt4, Clare Rusbridge5,6, Sofie F.M. Bhatti7, Akos Pakozdy8, Edward E. Patterson9, Simon Platt10, Rowena M.A. Packer11 and Holger A. Volk11 Abstract Canine idiopathic epilepsy is a common neurological disease affecting both purebred and crossbred dogs. Various breed-specific cohort, epidemiological and genetic studies have been conducted to date, which all improved our knowledge and general understanding of canine idiopathic epilepsy, and in particular our knowledge of those breeds studied. However, these studies also frequently revealed differences between the investigated breeds with respect to clinical features, inheritance and prevalence rates. Awareness and observation of breed-specific differences is important for successful management of the dog with epilepsy in everyday clinical practice and furthermore may promote canine epilepsy research. The following manuscript reviews the evidence available for breeds which have been identified as being predisposed to idiopathic epilepsy with a proven or suspected genetic background, and highlights different breed specific clinical features (e.g. age at onset, sex, seizure type), treatment response, prevalence rates and proposed inheritance reported in the literature. In addition, certain breed-specific diseases that may act as potential differentials for idiopathic epilepsy are highlighted. Keywords: Idiopathic epilepsy, Dog, Breed, Epilepsy prevalence, Epileptic seizure Introduction in part underlying genetic backgrounds (see also Tables 1 Canine idiopathic epilepsy is a common neurological and 2) [5, 6].

Pollet. Official language (FR). ORIGIN: Belgium. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF OFFICIAL VALID STANDARD: 13.03.2001. UTILISATION: Originally a sheep dog, today a working dog (guarding, defence, tracking, etc.) and an all-purpose service dog, as well as a family dog. FCI-CLASSIFICATION: Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle dogs). Section 1 Sheepdogs. With working trial. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: In Belgium, at the end of the 1800s, there were a great many herding dogs, whose type was varied and whose coats were extremely dissimilar. In order to rationalise this state of affairs, some enthusiastic dog fanciers formed a group and sought guidance from Prof. A. Reul of the Cureghem Veterinary Medical School, whom one must consider to have been the real pioneer and founder of the breed. The breed was officially born between 1891 and 1897. On September 29th, 1891, the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club (Club du Chien de Berger Belge) was founded in Brussels and in the same year on November 15th in Cureghem, Professor A. Reul organised a gathering of 117 dogs, which allowed him to carry out a return and choose the best specimens. In the following years they began a real programme of selection, carrying out some very close interbreeding involving a few stud dogs. By April 3rd, 1892, a first detailed breed standard had already been drawn up by the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club.

  • Detection of MLPH Gene Polymorphism in Population of the Belgian Shepherd Variety Malinois
Original scientific paper DOI: /10.5513/JCEA01/22.1.3028 Journal of Central European Agriculture, 2021, 22(1), p.66-71 Detection of MLPH gene polymorphism in population of the Belgian Shepherd variety Malinois Detekcia polymorfizmu génu MLPH v populácii belgického ovčiaka variety malinois Simona DUDÁSOVÁ (✉), Martina MILUCHOVÁ, Michal GÁBOR Department of Genetics and Breeding Biology, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Slovakia ✉ Corresponding author: [email protected] Received: September 3, 2020; accepted: December 8, 2020 ABSTRACT Melanophilin (MLPH) gene affects dilution of coat colour. It focuses on D locus alleles and in c.-22G>A polymorphism 2 alleles were described. Dominant D allele controls regular colour whereas recessive d allele causes dilution. Diluted colouration in Belgian Shepherd variety Malinois is undesirable and excluded from breeding. Dilution of the coat colour can sometimes be accompanied by skin disease (CDA or BHFD). Methods of molecular genetics including PCR-RFLP method were used to identify c.-22G>A polymorphism in MLPH gene. Within the analysed population of 56 dogs following genotypes were discovered: 50 dogs with homozygous DD genotype, i.e. 89.29% frequency of occurrence and 6 dogs with heterozygous Dd genotype, i.e. 10.71% frequency of occurrence. Keywords: melanophilin, dilution, dog, colouration, polymorphism ABSTRAKT Gén melanofilín (MLPH) je zodpovedný za zriedenie farby srsti.

GUIDE TO CONGENITAL AND HERITABLE DISORDERS IN DOGS Includes Genetic Predisposition to Diseases Special thanks to W. Jean Dodds, D.V.M. for researching and compiling the information contained in this guide. Dr. Dodds is a world-renowned vaccine research scientist with expertise in hematology, immunology, endocrinology and nutrition. Published by The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association P.O. Box 208, Davis, CA 95617, Phone: 530-759-8106; Fax: 530-759-8116 First printing: August 1994, revised August 1997, November 2000, January 2004, March 2006, and May 2011. Introduction: Purebred dogs of many breeds and even mixed breed dogs are prone to specific abnormalities which may be familial or genetic in nature. Often, these health problems are unapparent to the average person and can only be detected with veterinary medical screening. This booklet is intended to provide information about the potential health problems associated with various purebred dogs. Directory Section I A list of 182 more commonly known purebred dog breeds, each of which is accompanied by a number or series of numbers that correspond to the congenital and heritable diseases identified and described in Section II. Section II An alphabetical listing of congenital and genetically transmitted diseases that occur in purebred dogs. Each disease is assigned an identification number, and some diseases are followed by the names of the breeds known to be subject to those diseases. How to use this book: Refer to Section I to find the congenital and genetically transmitted diseases associated with a breed or breeds in which you are interested. Refer to Section II to find the names and definitions of those diseases.
