Catherine agrees that guidance of young athletes starts early, at the level of the coach, who has the rare opportunity to set standards for the team: “It’s about being clear about what’s accepted and what’s not ac- cepted, and what kind of environ- ment you’re going to create for the team.” The team may be all about having fun, but negative comments about race, gender, ability or sexual orientation need to be recognized and the behaviour shut down when it happens. This is important not only for the kids who are different, but for all kids—for when the boundaries of acceptable behaviour are defined and maintained, this is when change occurs.
